As gay marriages begin in Florida, Supreme Court is set to meet on issue

Those things you mentioned are but a small bit of what marriage covers. And none of them are as secure as legal marriage. And much of that stuff costs extra money if you want something besides a very basic contract. And it still would be more than a single document. Less efficient.

And a will alone at Legal Zomm costs $70-$80, not counting the $15 a month subscription fee. Then there is the costs for each of the other documents, some of which expire. The most expensive marriage license is about $100, most are much less, less than even the cost of just the will.

You'd also have to get a myriad of various institutions and organizations to recognize the familial status of Legal Zoom-based contracts. Like hospitals and visiting rights.

yeah, we did that too. 13 yrs.

And had none of the privileges and legal protections and tax implications that the govt accords those legally married. Was quite happy with it actually altho if we had been able to afford buying a house, we would have married because it was much easier and financially beneficial.

It was also great when we split up! Simple.

But that's the point people here are trying to make too. You can live with someone, even call yourselves married (we didnt) but then you dont get what legal marriage offers by govt recognition and that does flow down into a million daily things. Some good, some not. I never missed not making it official.

But gays want and IMO Constitutionally deserve legal marriage. They want that 'stuff' protected by and provided by that contract...let 'em.

I agree - there are benefits but the wife also has her own house and I have mine. Both of us have take care of one elder parent... it's certainly not the situation I would have seen myself in at 47. We've known each other since HS though fell out of touch for nearly 10 years. There are tax benefits and other things which has made us think about just doing it in the past - we joke and say at 20 years we're just going to elope to Vegas and surprise everyone. Truthfully we both do well enough economically and I know on my end, I don't want some stupid piece of paper screwing things up. We are both each others "power of attorney" in case something happens to one of us, so we at least try to plan and take proactive steps.

Another ignore and spanked again! Have some creme.

also im sitting here with my fiance and we want to get married can you suggest how we do that?

Sure.

Go to this website: Elvis Weddings - The Elvis in Concert wedding package and reserve a date/time. Put it on your CC.
Make sure to get the Elvis Pink Cadillac option to pick you up at the McCarran Int'l airport, get airline tickets to Vegas.

When you get there the pink Caddy will pick you up, take you to the little chapel, you fill out a forms and pick your witness, then have a wonderful wedding. I'd suggest staying at the Bellagio for at least 3 nights as it's just amazing- do some gambling and then fly back home.

Justice Department Will Urge Supreme Court To Rule In Favor Of Same-Sex Marriage
The U.S. Justice Department, however, isn’t standing inactive on the sidelines — they’re stepping forward to put in their own two cents on how same-sex marriage cases should be settled. According to the Washington Blade, Eric Holder has stated that the Justice Department will file a Friends of the Court brief, in which they will “urge the Supreme Court to make marriage equality a reality for all Americans.”

Holder said. “It is time for our nation to take another critical step forward to ensure the fundamental equality of all Americans — no matter who they are, where they come from, or whom they love.” - See more at: Holder]Holder to file brief arguing marriage rights 'for all Americans' to file brief arguing marriage rights 'for all Americans

Can we be done with this so our federal government can move on to something important?

well equal rights is always important but i do agree, in a country like the US this shouldnt be an issue as. In 2015 there are other important things to do instead of even entertaining the rantings of off bigots and anti-rights people.

Personally I think this should have remained a state issue. But at any rate there were more important issues than gay marriage in the past 10 years. Important enough that during election years they shouldn't have focused on the gay marriage soundbites. Maybe economy soundbites.

1.) you are allowed to feel that way but individual rights arent a states issue and theres no support for such a feeling based on the constitution and rights.
2.) nothing really "trumps" equal rights . . there are things that should have gotten more attention because this shouldnt be a focus at all but infringement of rights is never low on the totem pole IMO
3.) i agree but again you are picking a domino further down the line and not domino number one. SInce people that are bigots and or against equal rights made this an issue and government allowed these rights to be trampled on the politician didnt really have a choice. The easy solution would have simply have been for politician not to be against equal rights.

since enough media and extremists made it an issue they had to address it but they shouldnt have played along thier response should have been its not an issue

4.) i agree here also but again economy doesnt just trump equal rights IF they are being tramped on.
what we were seeing happen is like a 3rd world issue instead of an american one. I see what you are saying but PEOPLE made it an issue. If rights werent being trampled them we could have focused on those things.

"Equal rights" isn't as important as the nation facing economic ruin. Sorry but when you are starving you shouldn't be worried about who someone should or shouldn't have sex with. Our nation has a lot of problems and I feel that this last election focused way too much on gay marriage. Why? Because we have all kinds of economic woes.

Additionally the idea that this can't be solved at the state level is ridiculous. States can legalize the issue and it is easier than fighting the fed. But at any rate we are talking about an issue that faces far less than a 10%. I've seen a high of 7% and as low as 2%. Unfair? Sure. But when an issue faces 100% of the nation I think it matters more.

1.) ahhh i see where your mistake is, you think equal rights is about "who someone should or shouldn't have sex " thats no even close, You would change your tune if this was an equal rights issue for men and men werent allowed to work, then the economy wouldn't matter much. You viewing this as a non issue for yourself is the problem. ALso we arent facing "ruin" lol
The issue is denying people equal rights greatly effects thier own household financially.
2.) actually its the opposite, this factually cant be solved on a state level because the state has no power to solve it
3.) nobody is fighting the fed except the states who are trying to make it ILLEGAL. you have it backwards.
4.) again another huge mistake, equal rights effects us ALL. You shallow and illogical vision of the economy would just be like anybody that isnt suffering money wise simply not caring, thats not to smart.

If you were part of a minority group that didn't have equal rights would you still consider it an unimportant issue that should only be resolved when we have no other problems? I tend to find that people who overly emphasize the "states rights" aspect of SSM actually just don't want it to happen at all and hope their state can squeak by without it. If your state made an unconstitutional law say, that Christians couldn't marry, would you be just as upset if the federal government stepped in and overruled them?
