Boehner faces conservative opposition in speaker vote

Like I stated earlier in the thread Boehner would be re-elected. But it also should be noted this vote did make history as it was the biggest rebellion against a sitting speaker by his own party since 1923. It should also be noted that Boehner faced a 12 member revolt last Congress and this year it grew to 25. And surprisingly there were some Republicans that didn't show up to vote at all. The opposition is growing and if Boehner is smart he will take notice of that fact and start building bridges.

Those in the Conservative Base, the fiscal conservatives, the Constitutionalists for smaller government, those with a great respect for the rule of law, and the right leaning libertarian types as well as a good number of Independents that gave up on the GOP a long time ago are hanging on by a thread in the Republican party. They have pretty much given up on the GOP. If things continue the way they have been, I see the Conservative base breaking away from the party which amounts to well over a third of the party and starting their own.

i saw that though he was re-elected, the number of rebels more than doubled from last time.

while i appreciate the open debate among those in the party, and while i think boehner is indeed a bit of a squish on his supposed conservative principles, i don't think he gets enough credit for trying to keep the "wheelbarrow full of frogs" in line often enough. the impeach-obama-at-all-costs set in the far right seem to lack appreciation for the necessary, though unpalatable, compromise that is needed to actually accomplish anything legislatively.

now that they've got the senate, this is the primetime moment that boehner has been dreaming of; and i would support the ones who are trying to accomplish policy goals - even if only incremental - over those who take the my-way-or-the-highway approach

Boehner will muster enough votes to keep his speakership. But the number of votes growing against him is still telling. Those representatives who are growing in opposition to Boehner are a direct result of the constituents they serve. And it is telling. What McConnell may be able to muster up in the Senate in the name of Republican Establishment and their unholy alliance with the Chamber of Commerce isn't going to be so easily accomplished in the House.

Twenty five. That is the most Congressman this conservative groundswell could put together (and most of them relatively unknown to boot) the other 216 went to the Speaker. I'm glad these clowns got the spanking they deserved and are being shorn of their committee positions. Boehner has no intention of allowing these 'conservatives' to become the out of control grandstanding debt ceiling warriors again. According to most analysis I've read the 'Tea Party' faction of the part is small enough that it can be mostly bypassed as the majority, a solid 200, are apparently firmly with the Speaker. Thank god for that. Lets get some real work done this time.

So you support tyranny of the majority? Who cares about the liberals, the socialists, the libertarians, the tea party reps who represent nearly half the countries citizens? Whatever the Republican establishment wants shall be done? The reality is, the speaker of the House barely won his office. Which means almost HALF do not support his tyranny.
