Toddler shoots and kills mother in Hayden Walmart

Re: Mom Shot, Killed By 2-Year-Old Son at Walmart

I agree but also like I said, it may have been a momentary lapse of a woman juggling 4 kids in Walmart. A very costly lapse. :(

Perhaps the last thing she should have had in her purse was a gun....if she was juggling 4 kids a Walmart.;)

Exactly. So if you're going to leave a gun in your car you need to keep a trigger lock or similar in your car for it.

I have a safe in the trunk for mine. I usually have my carry piece on me with the bigger heavier 40 in the trunk with four loaded magazines

Re: Mom Shot, Killed By 2-Year-Old Son at Walmart

If it is a two year old toddler, hell yeah!!!!!

Not only would you be responsible, you would have CPS crawling up your butt trying to find out how your 2 year old escaped from your supervision long enough to find an unlocked car with keys in the ignition, is there long enough to figure out the ignition and emergency brake and reach the gas pedal.:lamo

A 15 year old is still a child.

I think iguanaman has started celebrating the new year ;)

If a 15 year old took a joy ride in a car...the question would be juvenile vs adult court. No CPS A 15 year old knows exactly what they are doing.

If a 2 year old was controlling a car and went on a joy ride...the question would be "where are the fricken parents, and how the hell did this happen" CPS should be involved.

Just as long as he is not behind the wheel while he is celebrating.......

Terrible tragedy. I own 2 1911s and these guns have manual safeties on them but even then I dont chamber a round- Im not a cop so Im not expecting a quick draw and fire situation and I have trained myself doing the Isreali draw (which is racking the slide as you draw) so this means that the only possible way my son could accidentally fire this gun is that he needs to chamber a round before pulling the trigger, and he isnt strong enough to do that. Guns need to be treated carefully, especially when you have young children around- this tragedy could have easily been prevented.

that is what I don't understand. why was the safety not on?
even if the chamber was loaded why was the safety not on?

chamber should never be loaded in the first place unless needed.
more so why was it in reach of a 2 year old.

I have a 2 year old and he is into everything coming and going.

glocks don't have manual safeties

its why they are so popular with the police and competitive action shooters

its why my son uses them for steel competitions and why my wife has one in a lockbox under the bed

its why I NEVER carry one concealed

ahh sorry I saw someone mention a 1911 and thought that is what the gun was. I haven't see anything describing the gun.

Found it.

Rutledge was a mother, wife, a chemical engineer and an outdoorswoman. However Tuesday her life was cut tragically short when her son got into her purse, found her 9mm Smith & Wesson M&P Shield semi-automatic pistol and fired a single shot, striking her in the head and killing her instantly in front of Veronica's three young nieces as well as other Wal-mart shoppers and employees.

Found it.

must be a newer model did a bit of research and S&W decided not to include the thumb safety on the newer versions.
sorry but guns need to come with safeties or it should be a requirement for concealed carriers.

i am all pro gun but if you are going to carry then you need to be responsible and having a gun with no safety is just not responsible.
it would have saved this mom's life.

what is more odd is that a 2 year old was able to pull the trigger to begin with. it must have a light action trigger on it.
it has about 6.5 pounds of pressure needed to pull.

Well if you take a moment to click on the link I provided.....you'll see there are 10 different models of that gun, 2 of which are both 9mm and have no thumb safety; of those 2, one has a 6.5lb trigger pull, the other has a 10lb trigger pull.

This 2 year old isn't a criminal, he's a 2 year old, and yes parents are responsible for keeping dangerous items away from children. This includes kitchen knives, household chemicals, keep the child from putting anything in an electrical outlet, etc.

Well I agree...I have said that she made a fatal mistake, by letting it out of her control. Similar to the example I gave of the cop that left his car gun in the glove compartment when he went into the store and left his kids in the van.

Exactly. So if you're going to leave a gun in your car you need to keep a trigger lock or similar in your car for it.

That makes it a bit hard to use if necessary, or a PIA everytime I get in and out of the vehicle. I am not required to do so in my state and again, dont feel any obligation for fault for people committing criminal acts.

Very possibly. Or just kept the purse on her person.

I know at least one busy mother that keeps a gun in her diaper bag....yet now I realize that her other kids could get to it. I hope she does. Will check.

*sigh* I'm home now for the night. I have a dog that is terrified of the fireworks. But I dont miss being out there on the roads at all. Scary even coming home from dinner.

Found it.

The M&P Shield does come with a safety or not...it's optional.

A 2 yr old could flip a safety but would not be able to chamber a round. (I realize you know this...just info for others)

You have no prohibited places in your state that you may need to enter, and thus need to leave your gun in your car? You never go into any federal building, not even the post office? Your employer won't fire you for carrying?

I don't want the anti-gunners to make a law against having a round chambered.

Well that's the PIA I was referring to. And why I wouldnt lock it up (I dont have a car gun but I would like to get one when I have the $$). I legally can leave it locked in my car in my employer's parking lot and I'm just not into the inconvenience of locking and unlocking the trigger mechanism everytime I get in and out.

If I were a parent, that would be a completely different thing.

Re: Mom Shot, Killed By 2-Year-Old Son at Walmart

No different than a gun kept in your car or your home, also frequently robbed. We should not be held responsible for the criminal acts of others.

What about if someone steals my car and uses it in a crime (happened)? Or kills someone with it? Am I to be held responsible? No.

Not sure, but if a firearm isn't reported as stolen, missing or sold, isn't that illegal, can't an owner be taken to task?

criminal laws make things ILLEGAL not legal.

if something is not illegal then it is legal by definition. so you show me the Idaho Statute making it ILLEGAL to carry in Walmart.

I didn't say carrying in walmart was illegal, did I? :doh

From your link:

So you don't need a permit to carry in any rural setting, nor if you're carrying openly. And that link continues to say a permit holder is exempt from criminal background checks when buying a gun. Cool.

You're a criminal?
