AirAsia flight QZ8501 loses contact with air traffic control: reports - World - CBC News

An Air Asia flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, Indonesian media said, citing a Transport Ministry official.

Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, flight number QZ8501, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic
control tower at 6:17 a.m local time.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

The flight is reportedly an Airbus 320-200 with 155 people on board

How can a flight just lose contact with air traffic control??

Third Malaysian aircraft this year.

Scary news. I think Im gonna start using European airlines when I travel in that area from now on.

Another Comercial airline missing. This time it's an AirAsia Airbus. When MH370 went missing I suspected foul play. It had a muslim pilot and was from an Islamic country Malaysia. AirAsia is also from Malaysia. If it is also not found then we have a major problem. When the first plane hit the WTC on 9-11-2001 I thought wow what a terrible accident. When the second one hit, well we all knew it wasn't an accident. I don't know if this latest disappearance is a tragic accident or not but something smells fishy to me.

They are probably as good as any oecd airlines.

That has been a question i have had in a number of cases recently.

I am a little stunned by this news, and I am not sure what sure what explanations I should jump to. Unlike the other plane that went missing, I hope this mystery is solved. I can't believe this is happening again. I hope we find the answers and solve the issues.

Air Asia is a pretty good airline, I've flown them a few times. They are much like Southwest, low fare, high capacity. They have always had a good mechanical and safety record.

There is some really nasty weather in that area, hope they find it soon.

Well as of right now all we can do is hope that they are all okay

Are you an investigator???

Why do you ask? Don't you find it odd that a plane can get lost in an area that is dense with traffic and continously monitored or that a large civilian airplane can go down in airspace that is under European air control and is being simultaneously monitored by AWACS as a war zone without anyone having noticed, if it was hit by a ufo with a signature?

I don't know what to think. I was wondering if you had experience with investigations or aviation...

Investigations of economic and political nature. Not aviation. But I do follow such things and apply methods of my areas of expertise. One such method is to ask why the obvious is not happening.

Air Asia is a good airline to fly, they are based in Malaysia, but have different subsidiary airlines under the same banner that are based in other countries. They also run AirAsia X with A330's for long distance routes, they did some very cheap european flights and was looking at going to the USA. Their fares are obscenely low, and can be bought without much advance time. They do nickle and dime you on extras and baggage, etc.

But, they are a good carrier, well run, their president is well known and they have really made flying in SE Asia convenient and cheap. I got stuck in Phuket when the protestors took over both Bangkok airports and they were very quick to reimburse me, I had to drive back up to Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and missed out on going to Cambodia, but prompt refunds, etc.

Good Lord. Did you miss all the coverage of the still missing airplane? They talked about this endlessly. ATC is not what people think it is and someone can hit a switch in the cockpit and kill all the communications.

I'm in on some of the airline employee geek sites, this news is in.

Airplane wreckage reportedly found east of Belitung Island, in Indonesia. No confirmation if Air Asia 8501

Just heard that this plane has a ditch switch and can theoretically land on water and stay afloat. Kind of odd.

More reporting on wreckage....CNN not even talking about this yet.

Malaysia Airlines is easy enough to avoid, but AirAsia is just too cheap to pass up. Flown with them dozens of times. Disturbing trend nonetheless.

Yeah, short haul flights I usually use local carriers since they are cheap but 3 tragedies in a row for Malaysia is too scary to contemplate using any of their carriers.
