Russia's Putin signs new military doctrine | Reuters

Dec 26 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new military doctrine, the Kremlin said in a statement on Friday.

The new military doctrine says the main external risks for the country are the expansion of NATO's military capabilities and destabilisation in several regions, RIA news agency reported. The doctrine also says the main internal risks are activities to destabilize situation in the country and the activities of terrorists, it added.

This isn't new, Putin has been playing the victim of NATO for decades.

Actually, he already grabbed a lot of the spotlight this time around. And there was no rational reason for his actions. What will he be willing to do, when he is under pressure?

Willing and able are two different things.
 
What did everyone expect to have happen? Russia is being ran by someone who operates with paranoia and Cold War mentality (especially when dealing and/or trading with neighboring countries.) At the same time the West seems more than willing to start up a new round of Cold War mentality back and forth. On top of all that Russia's economy is starting to show signs of concern including an underline monetary issue.

It is no shock that the propaganda is in full swing with predictable military flexing.
 
If "NATO expansion" is Russia's threat, and Putin plans to keep his military for defense purposes only (i.e., inside Russia), then what does he intends to do to stop the "NATO expansion threat?"

Within hours of Russian President Vladimir Putin approving a new security doctrine, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu flatly denied that the Western military bloc was a threat to any nation. "Any steps taken by NATO to ensure the security of its members are clearly defensive in nature, proportionate and in compliance with international law," Lungescu said.

"In fact, it is Russia's actions, including currently in Ukraine, which are breaking international law and undermining European security," she added in comments posted on her Twitter account. She added that NATO would "continue to seek a constructive relationship with Russia, but that is only possible with a Russia that abides by international law and principles - including the right of nations to choose their future freely."

Imo, this is overblown.

Russia's military (outside of it's nukes - and they're only good for deterrence) is a shadow of it's Soviet days. G.B., France and Germany alone spend more then double what Russia does on their military.

IMO, Russia is not going to start anything and neither is NATO. This is just Putin trying to look strong against Western (hypocritical) embargoes and low oil prices.

No way the latter stays down forever. And when they go back up, Russia should be fine and all this will blow over. Until then, they have large cash reserves and China has pledged to help if need be. It might get a tad tough for average Russians, but I think the will be okay.

I find it funny that every time Russia comes up, so many people start going all warlike...like it's 1982 again.

Those days are gone and so is the Soviet Union. By far the largest weapon Russia has is their oil and gas reserves, not their military.

When things start going bad for tyrants they start sabre rattling against external enemies. When they go very very bad they often attack those "enemies" it usually gives them a short lived boost until it all comes crashing down around them.

Economy's tanking
Most of the industralized world has slapped sanctions on you

One would think about cleaning up one's act. But no....Putin decides to act even more like a bully. His pecker isn't as big as it was when he started his proxy war in Ukraine, so he's gotta take some Viagra to get it up again.
 
I look forward to the far-off day when Russia has executed its autocrats and become a true liberal democracy and thus is eligible to join NATO. I would love to have Russia a global leader in the promotion of democratic hegemony. Much has to change before that can happen.
