MIAMISBURG —
Police had to be called after customers of a Walmart in Miamisburg became unruly when the store closed.
Police from Miami Township were dispatched around 8 p.m. when several customers became upset and unruly when the Walmart in the 8800 block of Kingsridge Drive closed Wednesday for observance of Christmas Eve.
Initial reports say people were trying to enter the store by force before police arrived.

Ok, so here is the question...I have noticed that peoples actions over the past 40 years or so have become more and more self centered...For instance, when I was a kid, never would you have had people going to this length to attempt to keep a store open just for themselves...

So, how about it? Are we becoming more selfish? Is this lashing out like depicted in the story a result of people feeling like they are being too tightly controlled? What say you?

This really doesn't surprise me today.

But I'm 71-years old and I never saw, or heard of anything like that happening when I was a child.

I am in my 60's and don't recall such rude behavior. I don't recall waiting overnight to get the first new cell phone, stores running 24/7 the week before Christmas.

imo, many have lost what Christmas is about and have fallen for the commercialization efforts.

Heck, my wife and I don't exchange presents any more. Have not for years. Its more important to just get family together.

Likewise. I'm 60 years old and have seen a general breakdown of society normal behavior.
I'm sure the reasons are more complex then just self centered "do what you want to do" -
but there aren't any social consequences to acting like a barbarian.

At one time people cared about a genteel (sic) behavior, but not anymore. we are rude and crude and revel in that hedionism

The nanny state has allowed idiocy to flourish.

I agree, this is what liberalism brings, an air of self-importance and entitlement that everyone owes you something and you have no responsibility to anyone but yourself.

It depends on the neighborhood.

I live in a nice City south of Houston. Our local Wallmart made an announcement last night that it would be closing and everyone exited in a orderly fashion.

Too tightly controlled? In a world where you can do nearly anything? Well, that's silliness.

But what has changed is the consequence of growing materialism. Things matter more than people, and we've lost any sense of community. We've isolated ourselves from others. Taken our myths (like rugged individualism) to heart and forgotten they were myths. As humans, we need community. And an internet community doesn't fit the bill.

Now that's not all of it, but it's a huge part of our problems.

If George Washington had been addressed in a rude tone of voice he would have run his sword through the offender. If a shopkeeper had been addressed rudely in the 1950s the offender would have the crap beaten out of him with whatever the shopkeeper had behind the counter.

Ergo people were a lot more polite back then. We don't have nearly enough of that kind of violence now days.

Capitalism is an ideology that promotes being selfish. Why you'd be surprised that people would act selfishly is beyond me.

I was just driving in Ohio and saw police outside of a Walmart... lol.

I was not in the area this happened though, so I am guessing it's high alert at many Walmarts today.

Maybe some people can't function without the psychological safety net of knowing Walmart is open in case they need something. Not all countries have the 24/7 business hours America has. It is very convenient being able to go get medication or anything, any time of the day in the states. I miss it when I leave the country.

I would usually write off a statement like this as hackery, but really, the Ayn Rand philosophy teaches the literal "virtue of selfishness." Liberalism is a collectivist philosophy, whereas modern conservatives favor individualism over the collective.

I would argue self importance falls under individualism, not collectivism. No responsibility to anybody but yourself is not collectivism, but more of an individualist mindset.

I am not going to argue these people are liberal or conservative. I am just pointing out the flaws in your post.

We've got a ways to go yet, but we are running headlong towards being like the people of the earth in Noah's day.

We didn't have 24 hours Wal Marts in the 60's. We didn't have as many people as we do now either. Look at the studies of mice behavior in overcrowded living conditions.

Too many people and the loss of manners. Just look at this forum of all the people who feel they are entitled to swear in public forums even though against the rules. Yes , there is the weak censorship of crossing out a few letters but the word is visible to anyone with an IQ over 60.

Entitlement to swear in public forums.... .... that's ****ing funny...

Swearing isn't a violation of forum rules here... :)

Those who have gone the ideological route have, as usual, no clue and refuse to challenge themselves with really examining the issue. From what I've seen, this is not about ideology at all. It's about current technology.

In this day and age, with technology as it is, we live in a time where one practically NEVER has to delay gratification. Want to watch a specific movie? In the old days, you waited until it came to the TV. Now, you have on demand services all over the place? Want to buy something? In the old days, you waited until you had time and went to the store... or if the store didn't have it, you either bought something else, went to a different store, or ordered it from the store and waited. NOW, go to Amazon or Ebay, click a few buttons, and in a day or so, it's yours. You don't even have to leave your room. Want to talk to someone? In the old days, you either waited until you got home... and spoke to them IF they were home too, or you found a pay phone, and again spoke to them if they were home, too. Now, you can reach anyone anytime, anywhere. Just pull your cell phone out and call. They have one, too. People are not used to gratification delay, so when they are told "no, wait", it contradicts everything that they usually do. Hence, what happened in the OP's article.

Gonna have to call BS on that one. If this were the case, we would have this same story repeating itself all across the country. But, we don't.

Lol !!

Its " Capitalism's '' fault ...

Wow.

The reality is some people are just too immature to handle Capitalism. The dame type of " Capitalism " is being applied at the Wallmart in my city.

We don't have problems like this.

Post No. 7 before someone finds away to blame "liberals" for an incident of idiots being idiots. Congratulations.

And this instant gratification issue becomes a problem in a lot of businesses who create custom products to customer specifications.

I've literally had customers to ask me if we had their custom made items on my shelf for immediate delivery. Not too long ago I repeated a customer's question, just to make sure that I was understanding what he was asking: "so you are asking me if we already have a box of your custom printed business cards that you haven't actually ordered yet". Once I phrased it like that, he understood how silly his question was.
