BBC News - Islamic State 'shoots down coalition plane in Syria'

Islamic State (IS) militants have shot down a US-led coalition warplane over northern Syria, activists say.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the aircraft, believed to be from an Arab state, went down near Raqqa.
The UK-based group said the fate of the pilot was unknown, but IS supporters published photos they said showed a Jordanian airman surrounded by gunmen. Jordan is one of four Arab countries whose aircraft have been bombing IS positions in Syria since September.
The Jordanian authorities have so far not commented on the incident.

(CNN) -- ISIS militants claim to have captured a Jordanian pilot after shooting down a coalition warplane over Syria on Wednesday, according to a statement posted on an ISIS-affiliated Twitter account.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had reported earlier Wednesday that ISIS had shot down an unidentified warplane near the extremist group's stronghold of Raqqa

Fallen.

Looks like a ZSU-23-4 'AA tank'.

ZSU-23-4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's amazing...take away all the ex-Soviet, ex-NATO military crap and pretty much all they would have to fight with is guns and rocks.

Selling weapons to third world/backwards countries (allies or not) is a recipe for eventual disaster.

Let them design and build their own weapons.

You don't get it.

They shot down a Jordanian plane because we have sold them a crap plane because it's all they can manage to fly and we don't sell them anything good in the first place.

No, you don't get it.

My point had nothing to do with why the Jordanian plane was shot down. I don't care why it was shot down. I barely even care that it was shot down (except for the poor, soon-to-be-beheaded pilot and his family).

My point was to do with the West meddling in regions that are none of it's business and/or selling huge quantities of weapons to unstable/corrupt regimes.

For example, the Saudi Arabia leaders are a horrible regime...yet they receive some (though not all) of the most sophisticated weapons the West can come up with.

If you dont deploy your airforce over foreign airspace you wont get shot down, its as simple as that.

In Rwanda they managed a much more extremely intense killing session using machetes. They don't need expensive weapons to kill each other.

It's hard to chop down a plane with machetes.

What makes you think it was AAA? The claim is that a 'heat seeking missile' was used to down the plane.

Arab nutcase shoots down another Arab who is from a culture too thick to make it's own weapons rather than spending the same time killing hundreds of Arab civilians.

Result.

Yes I'd like it to be a better one but you sometimes have to take second best.

Mornin' DA. :2wave: I don't think they will be in a hurry to kill the Jordanian. They will get some mileage off the propaganda with use of him.

Was bound to happen eventually, not very bright to expect that a "coalition" plane would never be shot down during this campaign.

It's a recipe for disaster ONLY IF one is not in the weapons industry.

If one is in the weapons business, it is a recipe for awesome and continued success. ;)

I said NOTHING about the ZSU shooting down the plane.

I was simply commenting on the photograph.

I neither read nor cared about the article nor do I care what brought down the plane...it could have been brought down by an ISIS soldier who is a big Star Trek fan using telepathy to tell the Jordanian pilot to give himself a Vulcan neck pinch to bring the plane down for all I care.

Actually if they did the latter - I would care about that.

It was bound to happen. War is not a video game although it seems most Americans have come to think of it that way since Desert Storm.

Heya DA. :2wave: We might want to start caring about Jordan.

Islamic State group support grows in Jordan town.....

Local authorities quickly stripped away public signs of support for the Islamic State group in this desert town. Black flags have been removed from rooftops. Graffiti proclaiming the extremists' imminent victory have been whitewashed. But supporters of the Middle East's most radical extremist group are only laying low after their surprise show of strength in protests last summer. Despite government efforts, support for the Islamic State group is growing in Maan and elsewhere in Jordan, one of the West's key allies in the region, say Islamic State activists, members of rival groups and experts on political Islam.

One of the leading Islamic State group activists in Maan said he and others are still working to build their base.....snip~

This is very bad news and will probably lead to a horrendous outcome for the captured pilot. Nevertheless, I don't believe the coalition can afford to waver in its fight against one of the more cruel and brutal movements of recent times. It would be a geopolitical disaster if ISIS were left alone, could consolidate its gains, and then ultimately destabilize Lebanon, with its own factional fault lines, and Jordan.
