‘Jesus is the reason for the season,’ politician says. At a menorah lighting ceremony

Re: The oops moment of the day

Jesus is the reason for Christmas. Which is the correct holiday to celebrate during this part of the year.

"Correct" is subjective which renders your comment irrelevant.

Re: The oops moment of the day

Your argument is subjective. It is based upon a subjective status rather than objective fact.

No, his argument is an objective fact... YOURS is entirely subjective based on the words you used.

Glad I could correct you.

Re: The oops moment of the day

Strike that it a was the Second Century BC. My mistake. Sorry, not so swift on Jewish history.

It was never a major holiday until it was used as the Jewish equivalent of Christmas.

I believe you are correct about this.

Perhaps, but I'm still pretty certain that Jesus is not the reason for Hanukkah.

Re: The oops moment of the day

Well, Jesus WAS a jew, wasn't he? He gets to celebrate both holidays. ;)

He died a Jew and converted to nothing, observed all the Jewish laws and rites.

There is NO Biblical support for ANYTHING we do as "Christmas". There is no present exchange at a birthday in Jewish tradition. There is nothing about holiday decorations, in fact gaudy applications carry stern warnings in the OT.

The tree and boughs tradition come from Middle ages Europe where peasants brought evergreen boughs into their homes for freshness, but also part of the pagan concept of worshiping the forest and praying to animals.

Green and Red are the predominant colors because they were the easiest to produce back in the day, and the feast comes from the pagan ritual of feasting on the winter equinox in recognition of winter gods and their arrival.

San ta Claus is an aberration of the truth, Nicolas I was noted for distributing food and toys to the poor, whose tale became about "Father Christmas" and, of course, Saint Nicolas and later "Santa Klas". The red suited version so ubiquitous today was invented by the Coca Cola company in the early 1900's.

And, for the record, male Reindeer lose their antlers in the winter, so the fat **** is exploiting women as well.

For Christians I ask this, if Jesus were staying with you for the holidays, would there be a Black Friday?

People can celebrate whatever holiday they want Paleocon.

Yes, I realize those things. The early church just needed to convert the pagans, and integrating some of the their seasonal rituals was a good way to help accomplish that.

So that's why Chanukah sucks.

Another culture warrior striking a blow against the war on Christmas!

How dare any other religion schedule a holiday during the Christmas season! It is obvious by trying to celebrate Hanukkah they are trying to kill Christmas. We must be ever vigilant against the enemies of faith and religion especially if those enemies come from faith and religion. NOTHING can deter us from celebrating the made up, fake holiday of Christmas and celebrating the one true religion to the detriment of everything and everyone else. Regardless of the fact that almost every single Christmas celebration is firmly based in pagan ritual. Logic, intelligence and common courtesy have no place when discussing the Prince of Peace!

sarcasm without hyperbole is like pot roast without gravy.

Most Jewish holidays do. A lot of them are pretty dour and even the ones that aren't (like Sukkot or Purim) are actually kind of silly. They don't translate into any kind of modern mindset well. That's one thing Christmas has going for it. A big feast with one's friends and family is pretty much always a good thing, no matter why you're doing it. That's why Christmas has such a universal appeal and why, frankly, Jesus isn't the reason even for the Christmas season. Celebration and the people we love are.

We'd celebrate Christmas unless our practicing grandmother came to visit. When she finally left...bam, Christmas time, though maybe a few days late. There was a Chanukah Harry (see avatar photo) skit in SNL roughly twenety odd years ago where he fills in for Santa and the kids are bummed by the ridiculous gifts (A dreidel, some warm socks and a pair of slacks) until Santa saves the day by getting better and everyone's happy again. That idea didn't come out of a vacuum.

Which makes it doubly as funny that someone against that narrative did the same thing....hahahaha!

It was intentional, sparky.
