The Repubs have a real opportunity now. How they use it will have much to do with 2016.

ABC/WP Poll: Republicans Get a Bounce From Midterm Wins

Republican victories in the midterm elections have translated into an immediate boost in the party’s image, putting the GOP at its highest point in eight years, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The spike in the party’s standing comes after Republicans picked up nine seats to take control of the Senate, raised their numbers in the House to the highest level in more than half a century and added new governorships to its already clear majority.

In the new poll, 47 percent say they have a favorable impression of the Republican Party, compared with 33 percent in the month before the midterm elections. An equal percentage have an unfavorable view, which marks the first time in six years that fewer than half of Americans said they saw Republicans negatively.

The improved standing reverses a lengthy period in which the public had given Republicans declining and, ultimately, historically low ratings. Successful elections often give political parties or candidates a boost, though sometimes those improved ratings prove to be a bounce rather than a sustained change.

Public impressions of the Democrats are now a bit worse than those of the Republicans and overall more negative than positive. More people gave the Democrats favorable ratings than they did just before the midterm elections — 44 percent compared with 39 percent. But the percentage of those rating the Democrats negatively was essentially unchanged at 50 percent, compared with 51 percent earlier. . . .

Although I'd like to think otherwise, they probably are winning by default. The leadership of the GOP seems to think going dem light is the future, they bring little to conservatives except being better than democrats, but not much. They will roll like its cool at the earliest opportunity, already have in fact.

ABC/WP Poll: Republicans Get a Bounce From Midterm Wins

Republican victories in the midterm elections have translated into an immediate boost in the party’s image, putting the GOP at its highest point in eight years...

From 8 years ago, they had nowhere to go but up. I still don't expect anything constructive from them.

I think McConnell is going to be a game-changer running the Senate.

Another Republican position that actually means something to be a Republican.
Versus the lesser ones for show that are not mainstream GOP .

Yes, he is gong to alienate conservatives and set us up for a loss in 2016. yay

What in the world are you trying to say?

I think he may become the most effective Repub leader in the Senate since Everett Dirksen.
Effective in what way? Capitulating to dems? What do you think he will accomplish? He's already a proven liar. Do you consider that a positive thing? Sorry man, not being personally critical of you for having high hopes for McConnell, I just vehemently disagree.

That surprises me Jack. Although the Republicans have been slowly rising since January. According to ABC's exit poll on election day they had his:

44% of voters view the Democratic Party favorably, 53% unfavorably
40% of voters view the Republican Party favorably, 55% unfavorably

Which was a substancial turn around from a year ago when CBS had

46% viewing the Democratic Party favorably, 48% unfavorably
29% viewing the Republican Party favorable, 63% unfavorably

There has been a huge change in Party Affiliation also, A year ago according to Gallup
30% identified as Democrat 23% as Republican and 46% Independent

As of 9 Nov 2014 the latest Gallup poll
28% identified as Democrat 28% as Republican and 41% as Independent

He has already said the Keystone XL will be the first bill in the new Congress. I think he will outmaneuver the WH on BHO's immigration executive order and force the question back into legislative debate. I also think he will begin the deconstruction of Obamacare.

My personal opinion is that public attitudes are evolving more rapidly and deeply than most observers had expected.

From 8 years ago, they [the Republicans] had nowhere to go but up. I still don't expect anything constructive from them.

The Democrats have certainly set the bar very low. All the Republican party really needs to accomplish in order to stay on top of public perception, at this point, is to not screw things up as spectacularly as the Democrats have done.

I hadn't thought about it prior but that may be a reasonable possibility.

The republicants had better actually do something with their congressional majority in both the House and Senate. If they do not, at a minimum, stop the growth of the federal government and reduce the federal deficit to zero then I will not vote for any national republicant candidates. If the republiucants want to govern like demorats then I will vote for Libertarians instead.

I am getting tired of spending millions to hold investigations/hearings that result in no change at all and rarely even a single firing (the VA policy actually leading to deaths is a prime example) of those that should be held accountable. Typically the reverse (a funding increase) results when things get screwed up badly by a federal program, agency or department. Step one for the republicants must be to (at least partially) defund any federal program, agency or department that has been found to be mismanaged (i.e. is no longer even under executive and/or legislative control). That includes ICE which has been ordered to not enforce the law - why spend more to get less done?

So long as no goofy "ten-year" plans, like Ryan seems prone to cook up, get passed which have spending increases now and mere promises of future spending cuts "down the road" (follow that kicked can?) or miraculous revenue growth or "savings" projections.
