BBC News - Sydney siege: Gunman takes hostages in Lindt cafe

At least one gunman took 13 people hostage Monday at a chocolate shop in Sydney, Australia, local TV news was reporting live. New South Wales police confirmed to NBC News that people had been urged to leave or avoid the area.

The Lindt chocolate shop is in Martin Place, a busy tourist, transportation and shopping district that is home to several major banks, including the Reserve Bank of Australia. At one point, a black flag resembling the ISIS standard was shown in the shop's window.

Very bad. I pray for the hostages and their families.

May God help them.

Details are still very sketchy. Lots of hostages are involved, we still don't know how many. The information we have about the gunman has not been confirmed. He appears to be middleaged with a black headband with white writing on it. He states that he has explosives strategically placed around the CBD.

It's a very serious and distressing situation.

Live feed is here.

Latest Reuters breaking news headline: "Breaking News: Lindt Australia CEO says about 10 staff working at Sydney siege cafe, probably 30 customers: Sky Business"

This is a bad situation. I have confidence in the Australian law enforcement and other security personnel at the scene. Hopefully, all of the hostages will be soon be free and unharmed. My thoughts are with the Australian people in this difficult situation.

Re: Islamist terrorist takes 13 hostages in Australia

From BBC coverage:

04:10: The Grand Mufti of Australia has issued a statement in which he condemns the siege in Martin Place.

"The Grand Mufti and the Australian National Imams Council condemn this criminal act unequivocally and reiterate that such actions are denounced in part and in whole in Islam.

"His Eminence the Grand Mufti, the Australian National Imams Council and the Muslim community express their full support and solidarity with their victims and their families and aspire to a peaceful resolve to this calamity."

Are you trying to be funny here?

Re: Islamist terrorist takes 13 hostages in Australia

I have said it before, governments should NEVER negotiate with terrorists. And publicly state that.

Stall for time to get an attacking force into position and go.

Sure, some hostages might die that way. But terrorists will think twice in the future knowing that your government will never give into them and WILL kill them.

Would probably save many potential hostages lives down the road.

Instead of the ignorance and hatemongering towards all Muslims because of the actions of zealous religious extremists, Australians are coming out in support of fellow Australians who fear a backlash from racists.

#illridewithyou: support for Muslim Australians takes off following Sydney siege

A hashtag showing support for Muslim Australians has taken off on social media following a siege at the Lindt cafe in Sydney today.

#illridewithyou is trending worldwide on Twitter, rising by hundreds of tweets per minute since it began this morning

702 ABC Sydney have had calls from Muslim listeners who say they are too scared to ride on public transport at the moment.

The hashtag appears to have come from a tweet from a woman who was riding on a train in Sydney, who noticed a Muslim woman quietly take off her head covering.

The woman said: "No, if you want to wear it, then wear it. I'll walk with you."

Another woman took to Twitter and wrote: "If you reg take the bus b/w Coogee/Martin PL, wear religious attire, &don't feel safe alone: I'll ride with you. @me for schedule."

The woman then suggested "maybe start a hashtag? What's in #illridewithyou?"

Take a look at some of the tweets:

"Dear assailant: you lose. Dear racists exploiting a tense situation: you lose. Dear real Australians: you win! #illridewithyou"

"This is my Australia. Being a Muslim this hashtag is the best thing happened today. I Love You Australia. #illridewithyou"

"The #illridewithyou campaign makes you feel truly proud to be an Australian. Let's greet all Muslim citizens tomorrow with a smile."

"Australians offer to go with Muslim Australians in public places if they fear racist backlash #illridewithyou So much better than bigotry"

"Just thinking of many proud moments Ive had as an Aussie seeing our country band together beyond hate is one of the proudest #illridewithyou"

"Illridewithyou: We will not turn on each other. We will not give terror organisations what they want. http://bit.ly/1wvxGXz"

The hostages family doesn't care if they Negotiate by meeting his dumb commands, as long as they get their family back alive. Should be a case by case basis.

That's pretty cool...And props to the Grand Mufti that Don posted earlier...That is what needs to be done by Muslim leaders more if they truly want to be separated from the nuts.

Muslims are not a " race " so the charge of racism doesn't apply.

I'm sure its being used more for its negative connotation than anything else.

As far as the non Muslim Australians are concerned they have a right to be upset.

It was their leaders that embarked upon the very same initiative of Multi-culturalism thats back fired in Europe.

That initiative introduced a level of radical extremism that they never signed up for.

It is done all the time by Muslim leaders in the west.. it just rarely makes it in the news.

A crazy fueled by his own heretical delusions of spiritual grandeur.

Re: Islamist terrorist takes 13 hostages in Australia

Not possible, guns are banned in Australia...

And wow, the msnbc isn't even mentioning his islamic roots.

Is it going to be considered just a random attack? wink wink?

Re: Islamist terrorist takes 13 hostages in Australia

Sustained gunfire is being reported. This may be over.

Re: Islamist terrorist takes 13 hostages in Australia

In other words he is far more a crazy man than anything remotely religious...

Aren't all terrorists 'crazy'?

Re: Islamist terrorist takes 13 hostages in Australia

Confirmed: two of the hostages were killed.

R.I.P
