Kennesaw City Council rejects mosque proposal

"It was just this past July when the City Council approved a request from a Christian church to rent space in a small retail center in Kennesaw for their worship services.

Councilmember Cris Eaton-Welsh made the motion to approve the Muslim's request to do the same, but the other four members refused, silently, without debate -- and without comment afterwards...."
Kennesaw City Council rejects mosque proposal

When politicians are quiet and won't discuss or explain their decisions on a controversial issue it is likely to be because they know that their statements will be used against them. The lack of comment is strong evidence that religious bias, or pandering to the community's religious bias, was the motivation for voting against the proposed use.

Update from 12/5:
"Kennesaw may revisit mosque decision

Faced with a possible federal investigation and the threat of a lawsuit, Kennesaw officials may reconsider a decision to block a mosque from operating in a local shopping center.

In the latest in a series of metro Atlanta mosque controversies, the Kennesaw City Council Monday rejected a proposal to allow the mosque, even though the planning commission and city staff recommended approval. The action came after some residents expressed concerns about Muslims worshiping in the area.

Representatives of the mosque say they’ve spoken to the U.S. Department of Justice about what they see as blatant discrimination in violation of federal law. The department has intervened in similar cases across the country, including decisions by Lilburn and Alpharetta to deny mosque expansions. Under federal pressure, those cities ultimately approved the expansions....

“We are reviewing the information provided to us” about the Kennesaw mosque, a Justice Department spokeswoman said.

Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews said he does not believe the City Council “intentionally discriminated in any manner.” But he said the council may revisit its decision and will discuss the issue at its Dec. 10 work session...."

Is this an argument against first amendment rights for Muslims?
I never mentioned the First Amendment but Muslims can certainly say what they want, and do. Unfortunately what many have said is not in the free world's best interests. The same goes for women, children and, of course, Jews.

The majority of Germans were not Nazis. So what?

Muslims killing Muslims is a defense? Many Muslims are terrorists, or sympathize with them, and that is an inescapable fat.

The majority of people killed by the Nazis were not other Nazis. So your comparison is not really good.

another instance of "religious freedom for me but not for you guys"

They agree to every legal restriction the city attorney could come up with but their application was still rejected.

I so love the way "government spends too much of our money!" types seem to be willing to spend lots of money fighting losing causes based on religious and social beliefs.

That area of Georgia... when you start getting north of Atlanta and start climbing up into the mountains is insanely beautiful. But it is also full of the most bigotted people you can find. The Klan still exists in appalachian areas of North Carolina and such. Still good people all around there but a very closed society.

As they have found in other countries, some of these mosques are nothing but breeding ground for terrorists.

If the people thought that was a possiblity, why let them in?

If a mosque gets built in that part of appalachia you can expect that the terrorist bred by that mosque will be the ones fire-bombing it.

The existence of this thread would indicate that muslims cannot, in fact, do what they like.

Less oxygen in those parts :p

The scenery would blow your mind. Its so beautiful. And if lack of oxygen is an issue, it'd be much more where I am now than there. Santa Fe, NM is 1,000 feet higher than Denver. lol

FYI... Kennesaw is 1,000 feet. Santa Fe is 7,000 feet above sea level.

I've been to Chattanooga, Helen, dalonega, the cabbage patch hospital, etc, more than once. I know the area well.

I would even try to live there if my allergies could handle it without needing constant benadryl.

I was trying to have a bit of a sense of humor...

Yeah... I wasn't trying to be overly serious. I just like stats.

My dad just moved from Dahlonega a couple months ago back towards Southern Ga. He's the one that told me about the Klan having annual rally's in small towns up there in Northern GA and Western North Carolina.

Back when I was living in alpharetta, cumming would have a yearly Klan rally, it was quite disturbing

There are usually meeting minutes that will reveal the criteria used in their decision making, as well as e-mails and statements to the press that may reveal whatever biases the deciding panel may have had. In zoning decisions the deciding panel usually cites the specific laws that they want to uphold or their reasons for creating an exemption.

Sure, and when their reasoning is that the application was missing an appropriate apostrophe and thus couldn't be considered, I think folks will rather suspect it is something other than presented. Even if it is "no Muslims", it is just as likely to be "my Constituents are afraid of the security complexities" as it is "I don't like Islam" or some other such.

However, there are two parts - motivation is both unknown and irrelevant.

In the 13 years I've been here I have never seen or heard of a Klan rally. There have been rumors and one old building out near Clarksville that would be inexplicably packed full at what would appear to be random nights, but with as many people as I know here I have never heard anything about it.

How would you know you've "only ever met one"? Not like people wear badges telling us what their faith is. I was chatting with the clerk in a liquor store once and because of his physical appearance, I thought he was a Muslim. He was from India and so I changed to thinking he was a Hindu believer - Nope, he was a St Thomas Catholic

I've met many India-ns here. They are generations deep in the local hotels. They are almost all Hindu, with just a few Christians in the group. One of our friends was married to an India-n guy so we hung out with them a lot. Some really good food too. I was introduced to a Pakistani guy who owns a couple of gas stations in the area. According to Raj he was the only Muslim guy around. Remember we are in the north Georgia mountains. Over the next couple of years I got to discover that yes, he was a dick.

You seemed to have missed the point. And Muslims kill many other people besides other Muslims.

Well whatever. Both groups are responsible, or were responsible, for the deaths of millions. And of course racism is a priority for both.

Racism might be a priority for nazis, but it is not for Muslim terrorists.Their brand of Islam is what is a priority to them not race.

You're not familiar with the Islamic attitude towards Jews? If you want to learn about the subject, and participate more knowledgeably in this thread, it's easy enough to Google 'Muslims hating Jews' (or anything similar) to educate yourself on this important international topic.

All they have to do is keep trying, this in the end will be found to be a violation of rights.. ...

Do you understand that Muslims preach hatreds against Jews, even to their own children, and would like to 'wipe them from the map'? Are you familiar with any of this?
