Kennesaw City Council rejects mosque proposal

They may stay peaceful but they'll never stop because self-victimization is a part of Islamic culture.

For example Islamists ****ed my country but they are still making up stories, claming that they can't practice their religion freely.Accusing everybody that opposes mandatory religion classes for 4 yo kids of being intolerant bigots.

This is the truth about Islam admit it and move on.

Your argument might work except we have seen fundamentalist Christians do the same things in the USA. In fact they had a lot of success imposing their beliefs on others until the 196O's. That same behavior can be found throughout history and all over the world amongst many political, religious and other groups, it is not unique o Muslims.

How is that at all the same as what you said?

Get people together of like mind... Congress. They can then attempt to legalize oppression.

Not allowing them to build a Mosque, is not denying them the right to practice their religion.

Now if the town tries to make "Islam" illegal, then you would have something.

If the town is prohibiting the facility use because of the religion of the users it is illegally denying them the right to practice their religion.

I doubt it's some huge conspiracy. Kennesaw is a very conservative town with down to earth people and a very low crime rate. Whether or not the stigma of Islam today means anything to you, there are people who would rather not deal with the potential problems just to satisfy some theoretical equality standard supported by idealistic school kids throwing their morality from an academic high ground paid for by somebody else. Carry out your social experiments in your own back yard. Or move to Kennesaw and work on your neighborhood. Kennesaw is one of the biggest pro gun towns in the south. They have an ordinance that requires every household to have and maintain a firearm. Perhaps they were considering the safety of the Muslims in question.

Your Country is a disgrace and their actions have no place in the civilised world.

It shows the importance of protecting your government's secular and religiously neutral principals. The secular people of Turkey need to get politically active and oppose the religionists. I know that there have been attempts to resist, such as the large scale protests in Istanbul a year or so ago. My sense is that most Turks supported having a secular government. I hope I'm correct, since it is very difficult to stop a majority when they want to oppress a minority.

Sharia law. They want sharia courts. They even have hashtags like "Sharia4UK" "Sharia4Belgium" etc.

And I can find some random person demanding that Christianity become the official language of the United States. Hell there's a thread of people who think mosques shouldn't be allowed to be constructed in the United States. (screw the first amendment, I guess)

How many people say this? And what do they mean by a "sharia court?" Because folks like yourself will pick out the most heinous parts of the Quran and assume that "sharia court" includes that, but if I do the same regarding the Old Testament, I'm a bad person apparently.

So I need more details.

In any case, who cares if some religious people want to enforce their religion onto everyone else? Just don't let them do that. In America, we have this thing called the constitution. If we stick with it, we wont have a problem with sharia law, or jewish law, or buddhist law.

In that case requiring a permit to carry a concealed firearm is denying people the right to bear arms. Not in Kennesaw though. Take a look at their gun laws.

It's fun to watch self proclaimed atheists who spend their time trolling Christians defend Islam in today's climate as though freedom of religion really means anything to them to begin with.

As one of the most oppressed belief systems, most atheists have a much greater appreciation of the importance of freedom of speech than members of the popular religions.

Is the proposed facility in Kennesaw private property? Because if so, your analogy is flawed.

Yep, defending the right of one group to gather in worship must mean I really really hate some other group. What's that old saying about making assumptions?

The funny part for those of us on the outside is the similarity of positions held by fundamentalists of Muslim and Christian stripe, yet the two claim they are so different.

Anti-womens rights: Check

Anti "sodomy": Check

Anti abortion: Check

Patriarchal dominance: Check

Anti pornography: Check

I'm sure there are more that others can add to the list

Feel entitled to control the government: Check

You don't need more details, you need to be honest. You only pretend to not understand it because you have a hard on against Christianity. You don't care about the religious freedom of Muslims, you just want to troll Christians. It's pretty clear that the radical side of Islam has cast doubt on the true intent of the belief system, especially considering the underwhelming need of the rest of the Muslim community to disagree with it.

I was an atheist for 20 years. I didn't feel oppressed at all and didn't much care about anyone else's religious freedoms. Did that make me an unusual atheist or is your assumption flawed?

another instance of "religious freedom for me but not for you guys"

They agree to every legal restriction the city attorney could come up with but their application was still rejected.

I so love the way "government spends too much of our money!" types seem to be willing to spend lots of money fighting losing causes based on religious and social beliefs.

This sort of crap happens in my area. They blocked a mosque from adding a pre-school and from building a Muslim cemetery on land that had originally been approved as a Jewish cemetery but the zoning status reverted when it was never developed. In both cases it was BS because there were other small pre-schools in the same area and the land they wanted to use as a cemetery is also adjacent to an existing cemetery but apparently a Muslim cemetery would be a nuisance when the existing cemetery isn't and the Jewish one wouldn't have been.

Municipalities have had zoning restrictions for hundreds of years. Wheaton Illinois may never have a bar that serves liquer. Not because it is illegal but because zoning ordinances prohibit a bar from openng within a predetermined distance of a church or school. It just so happens there are so many churches and schools that there is literally no physical location to legally open a bar. Perhaps Kennesaw has an ordinance that will not allow a place of worship within a perdetermined distance to a gun store or range and they are just all out of space. ;)

I'd be very surprised if they were doing it for the Muslims' "own good."

Kennesaw is a suburb of Atlanta, these aren't Deliverance-country types. Being in Cobb County, I'm guessing they haven't been sheltered from crime, either.

I support an equality standard, but it certainly isn't theoretical. Last time I checked, it was the law...

And, seeing as my parents live in Cumming...right up the road... I certainly care about what happens in their neck of the woods.

Good that you know that. Many of the posters here think that all of Georgia is a backwoods trailer park full of civil war reenacters with mullets. As for laws, well our current President has taught us that laws we don't like won't be enforced. Hey, he set the precedent. Don't like a law? Ignore it until your decision gets overturned in court.

Cumming looks like any suburban area in American complete with retail shopping as far as the eye can see. They have a Rosatl's Pizza there where we can finally get real Chicago food. It is a good hour away from our rural mountain community. But if you have spent enough time here you may understand how it could very well be for their own good. The art of deception thru semantics is largely lost here. Sugar coated bull**** is a northern dish imported from california.

Nah, Atlanta, Columbus, Athens, Augusta, Rome, Savannah, etc have some decent civilization

Even smaller places like Lagrange or carrollton

A bit unusual, but atheist's experiences vary depending on where they lived, how out they were, and when they were an atheist.

The OP said that the Muslim group agreed to comply with all the conditions imposed by the City Attorney.

We recently got to go to Little Five Points. Now THAT place has a culture of it's own. If you like people watching it's a fun day trip. Some good food there too. It's got the hippy feel of Asheville NC turned up to eleven.

Radical Christians exist. So should I use their example to "cast doubt" on the rest of Christians?

The attorney for the Muslim group, Doug Dillard, said they may sue the city in federal court. He said that in similar fights across Metro Atlanta, he has reached out-of-court settlements after suing the local governments. The cases never went to trial; the two sides ultimately reached a compromise.

Ah,now it makes sense. Religious trolling for profit. How nice.

Whatever flips your switch. It doesn't much matter to me how you treat Christians.
