Coming soon to a Police Dept near you. Police Officers to wear Body Cameras. BO is doling out 75 mil for the new equipment. What say ye?

President Barack Obama is expected to sign an executive order to encourage more oversight of federal programs that dole out military gear to local police departments, senior administration officials said Monday. The executive order will direct agencies that distribute military-style equipment to local police to require training for cops that receive the gear. The president will also require officials to create a central database to track the supplies, as a significant number of weapons and vehicles previously allocated have gone missing.

Obama does plan to dole out one new piece of equipment to police departments that will likely please civil liberterians: The White House will allocate $75 million dollars over three years to provide police departments with up to 50,000 body-worn cameras for their officers.....snip~

Good afternoon MMC

So much shopping to do with taxpayers' dollars and only two more years for the spree. It'll be like Christmas in the White House for the next 25 months.

And of course, this initiative does nothing to address any of the real problems facing the country.

What police departments where? The article doesn't say.

There are something like 900,000 law enforcement officers in the USA.

Yeah. These are state and local departments. They have to apply for the equipment and there is already a strict training element to satisfy the grant.

I'm pretty sure that $75 million dollars is a drop in the bucket compared to money spent on armored vehicles and para-military gear. Police are a civilian organization that are around to "protect and serve".

I guess you never know...the Syracuse police department may need to use their new 658k mine resistant vehicle

I'm positive though that vest camera's will result in Police officers being held accountable for their actions.

Good! Police departments don't need to be standing armies.

Heya CJ. :2wave: Well he does get off another EO.....and of course dole out money he doesn't have.

Heya TB :2wave: Yeah it didn't say.....nor about what the Fed has already doled out.

On a call with reporters, administration officials would not say whether the president supports or opposes bipartisan efforts in Congress to ban local police departments from receiving recycled armored vehicles from the war in Afghanistan and certain kinds of assault rifles.

The president’s planned executive action also does not appear to immediately affect the 460,000 weapons and other controlled pieces of military equipment that have already been doled out from the Pentagon to local law enforcement agencies, including more than 5,000 Humvees and 92,000 guns.....snip~

In other words he's voting "present"?

I think this is a really good executive order.

I have no problem with the EO where it comes to requiring more training to receive surplus equipment. But do not believe EOs should ever require funding that congress hasn't provided for in budget.

I think it a stupid waste of funds.

On the other hand, I'd rather all able-bodied prisoners be mandated to wear iron leggings linked to a long chain while doing worthwhile physical labor.

That's called, paying one's debt to society.

I think that ALL police should be required to wear body cameras - having such might have prevented what's happened in Ferguson. That, and at least he's looking for oversight of that military gear...because before, there wasn't any oversight at all.

Did Obama get around to deciding how schools should set up Michael Brown memorials today?

I agree that they should wear cameras but, wouldn't that be the first thing a criminal would rip off their uniform?

Gone missing.....

That's the scariest thing I've heard in a long time. Just who has their hands on military grade hardware and for what reason.

It sometimes happens, but I have to agree with Obama on this one, proving that indeed even a broken clock is right twice a day and an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters will eventually write Hamlet.

I really don't know about that as there have been reports of cops turning off their body cams (Officer involved in Monday shooting had body cam turned off - FOX 8 WVUE New Orleans News, Weather, Sports) in addition to this, there have also been beatings caught on camera and nothing occurred. IIRC, Kelly Thomas' beating was filmed and the two cops who did it are walking around free.

Does the President have the right to approve the spending of money without Congress? I'm asking because I don't think he does.

Via Executive Order on Wikipedia:

There is no constitutional provision nor statute that explicitly permits executive orders. The term "executive power" Article II, Section 1, Clause 1 of the Constitution, refers to the title of President as the executive. He is instructed therein by the declaration "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed" made in Article II, Section 3, Clause 5, else he faces impeachment. Most executive orders use these Constitutional reasonings as the authorization allowing for their issuance to be justified as part of the President's sworn duties,[2] the intent being to help direct officers of the U.S. Executive carry out their delegated duties as well as the normal operations of the federal government: the consequence of failing to comply possibly being the removal from office.[3]

I know wikipedia isn't a great source, but it looks like it really depends on the interpretation of various clauses. So considering that the police are part of the executive branch, he has full authority to do what he just did assuming this source is accurate.

No, only government agencies. ;)

Leave the military equipment to the military. We don't need policemen who want to act like Rambo.

I hope he doesn't use the same trainers used to train the military in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Thanks for the link sook.

They might want to look in some warehouses owned by DHS.....huh?

I don't have any problem with the cameras myself.....but I would think those from whatever states, cities, and suburbs should be making that call for their own communities. I don't think it requires an EO.

Why don't they just save time and start taxing Americans at 100% rates and start a Department of Conformity where every American is fined for not conforming to 'American standards of dress and conduct'.

Let the government run everything...that is what they want (both parties) anyway.

Let's skip the preamble and just get right to it so the next civil war can begin.

The sooner it starts, the sooner it finishes.
