Former Senator Jim Webb To Run For Prez?

Former Senator Jim Webb announced that he has formed an exploratory presidential committee. Webb, not a Washington insider:

Our Constitution established a government not to protect the dominance of an aristocratic elite, but under the principle that there should be no permanent aristocracy, that every single American should have equal protection under the law, and a fair opportunity to achieve at the very highest levels.

We have drifted to the fringes of allowing the very inequalities that our Constitution was supposed to prevent. Walk into some of our inner cities if you dare, and see the stagnation, poverty, crime and lack of opportunity that still affects so many African-Americans. Or travel to the Appalachian Mountains, where my own ancestors settled and whose cultural values I still share, and view the poorest counties in America – who happen to be more than 90 percent white, and who live in the reality that “if you’re poor and white you’re out of sight.”
The Democratic Party used to be the place where people like these could come not for a handout but for an honest handshake, good full-time jobs, quality education, health care they can afford, and the vital, overriding belief that we’re all in this together and the system is not rigged.

Al Hunt, a Bloomberg columnist, warned that Webb “could be Hillary Clinton’s worst nightmare,” noting that Webb:

"seems an improbable candidate. He has taken illiberal positions, was President Ronald Reagan’s Navy secretary, has few relationships within the Democratic Party, and has no serious fund-raising network. What he does possess is a long-held and forceful opposition to U.S. interventions in Iraq and Libya, and potentially Syria, as well as solid anti-Wall Street credentials. In Democratic primaries, these may be Clinton’s greatest impediments to rallying a hard-core activist base."


That's actually very interesting and he could really use that against Hillary.

I rarely say stuff like this, but: And so the Civil War of the Democrat Party begins!!! It's going to be exciting to watch the dems fall all over each other like the Republicans did last time. Republicans have been quietly reformatting their agenda, platform, and internal party policies. It's time for the dems to take the beatings for once. Obama has done more to harm the party than the nation.

LOL! :lamo He might color his hair. I never thought about that. If he runs someone will ask him at some point.

Webb, is an interesting consideration. As you know I don't support, will not support, will not vote for any member of any political dynasty so Hillary has never been on my radar. Beyond that I don't like her anyway.

Webb might bring some interesting discussions to the Democratic table. He may force other candidates to address issues that the two ruling parties would rather not discuss. That's healthy and God knows we need more of that from all across the political spectrum. Webb enjoys a measure of respect in America and I agree, he might deal Hillary fits. I hope he does.

Your reasons for not voting for Hillary mirror mine, which is why I also won't vote for Jeb Bush, although I like him. I'm sick of the dynastic model in our political system.

I think Webb would absolutely challenge the status quo, which I think is desperately needed now. I supported Huntsman here in NH in 2012 and really liked him because he -when given the chance - questioned the major party platforms and ideals. It was so damn refreshing. Of course the GOP slapped him silly for that, but 2 years later he runs a very independent party/grassroots group. Webb to me is a lot like Huntsman in being an outsider to the party he aligns with.

Besides, when he is debating Hillary and Elizabeth Warren, he can sit back and watch the catfight play out, which will make him look so good.

Personally, I have a lot of respect for Jim Webb as a man and as a politician.

If anything, Mr. Webb may be able to rescue the Democrat party from the Obama fringes that are doing their best to bury it. He might actually toughen Hillary up. Mr. Webb is a serious man and his announcement shouldn't be mistaken for a novelty or a vanity run.

I don't trust the Democrat party any further than I can throw them,
that said I always respected Webb and he's the only dem I could vote for.

As an Independent I hope both ruling parties crumble to nothing. They are a major part of the problem and thus cannot, and more importantly, will not be a part of the solution.

The Democratic Party lacks balls and leadership. However, it has unity. Together the Democratic Party is weak and ineffective and they seem to all agree on that being that way. A unified force for organized retreat. It ever there was an obvious reason for term limits it is the Democratic Party. Not only will new blood help, but new blood might indicate the presence of a pulse.

The GOP remains a political cluster****. The old guard is determined to do what it wants, damn the people. The GOP old guard is politically deaf as far as the nation is concerned. While the old guard has been circling fewer and fewer wagons, the party has become infested with right wing religionists, Tea Partisans (who in their own way are just as disjointed at the GOP overall) and the Neocons never left and are still vying for control while Moderate Republicans are shamed, derided and generally peed on by most of everyone else in the party. The GOP is no more a hope for the nation than the Democratic Party.

The saving graces for both ruling parties are:

1. Both are owned, lock, stock and barrel by Big Business.

2. Americans are too lazy and/or willfully ignorant and/or afraid to give a big middle finger to the status quo and vote the bastards out.

I wouldn't vote for a (D) unless the party and it's platform changed because if that doesn't happen, democrats have to support democrat initiatives and fight democrat fights.

But it's moot point. Any democrat that doesn't tow the Democrat party line would never get nominated. Freestuffers are too vested in their freestuff and all the dishonest rhetoric designed to justify it for them to vote for someone they don't trust to support and enhance their entitlements.

Well from his past it doesn't seem like he is well rounded enough to be a full Presidential candidate, and I hope you are right that he isn't just in it to sell his books. Books might I add seems to love writing! We don't want another frustrated Democratic President that can't fill the shoes of Bill Clinton or George Bush.

I'm still learning about him because as a moderate he has definitely piqued my interest.

One thing I like about Jim Webb is that he hates politics. However, I can't see where that quality will be an asset for him in a presidential election. Ideologically, he is fairly close to Bill Clinton. However, he lacks the charisma.

Very few presidents have that type of charisma. I can think of only three, FDR, Reagan and Clinton. All three connected with the people like no other president ever could.
