Senate Narrowly Defeats Keystone XL Pipeline

This isn't good for Landrieu.

Wind farm funding isn't hurting for cash. The wind industry only exists because of green welfare. How about we support an industry that can actually stand on it's own feet? What's wrong with that?

We already subsidize the oil industry. My point was that it was dumb to nix the pipeline, as it could be used as a bargaining chip. Do you need for me to clarify further?

Let's see how many of those 24 Republicans up for reelection in 2016 get targeted, especially those like Kirk from my state .

I would like to know the names of the 14 Democrats who support it. I would like to compare the names to see if the new incoming Republican Senators would change that Nay to Yea. Now I am sure it will pass next year, the question in my mind is the number 67 as I think the President will veto it. Now the public seems for it:

I see your point. Very good.

So it's still about politics with you people and your messaging war.
Even oil executives now say the KXL wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference at this time.
Unless of course that dirty oil was staying here in the USA, which it isn't.
Good thing we're not allowing another country to dictate to us, don't you think ?

This isn't good for Landrieu.

completely different issue--but you knew that already -

It's not double speak, that's how you encourage some critical businesses. Do you remember when shell spent a $billion drilling in northern Alaska looking for oil, only to be denied later the rights to go to production?

Passage wasn't going to make any difference. She just wanted to be on record as introducing the bill. She never gave a flying **** if it passed.

And...what?

Maybe, but that's an important business there.

Of course she did .

No, you're the one that doesn't know. They spend a lot of money on high risk drilling that may not pan out for various reasons. Have you any idea how tiny OUR Big Oil really is?

Too bad there isn't a loyal opposition on the other side willing to deal as you've mentioned.
Hasn't been since the night Obama was elected, as you well know .

The Democrats have demonstrated some of the poorest politicking and messaging in recent memory. They have given the public no clear plan at a time when that is exactly what the voters want. This has only been trumped by the most histrionic hyperpartisanship that I have seen in my lifetime on the part of the Republicans. And that includes impeaching Clinton for a blow job. ****, the idiots on the left even made a snuff film about Bush. How do you top that?

Unreal.

what is the earned income tax credit?

A tax credit given to a very large portion of the population.

But not to a business, thus not very relevant to "picking winners and losers" in this context.

I have already started work for 2016. Without knowing names of the candidates I already posted an early 2016 senate list.

With 2014 in the books, for fun let’s look ahead to 2016. 24 Republicans are up for re-election vs. only 10 Democrats. For simplicity I will consider Alaska and Louisiana went to the Republicans and Virginia to the Democrats for a total of 54 Republicans and 46 Democrats. So let the fun begin:
Alabama R Shelby wins 54 R 46 D
Alaska R Murkowski Wins 54 R 46 D
Arizona R McCain retires Democratic gain 53 R 47 D
Arkansas R Boozman wins 53 R 47 D
California D Boxer wins 53 R 47 D
Colorado D Bennett wins 53 R 47 D
Connecticut D Blumenthal wins 53 R 47 D
Florida R Rubio – Rubio wins 53 R 47 D
Georgia R Isakson wins 53 R 47 D
Hawaii D Schatz wins 53 R 47 D
Idaho R Crapo wins 53 R 47 D
Illinois R Kirk loses Democratic gain 52 R 48 D
Indiana R Coats wins 52 R 48 D
Iowa R Grassley wins 52 R 48 D
Kentucky R Paul wins 52 R 48 D
Kansas R Moran wins 52 R 48 D
Louisiana R Vitter wins 52 R 48 D
Maryland D Mikulski wins 52 R 48 D
Missouri R Blount wins 52 R 48 D
Nevada D Reid wins 52 R 48 D
New Hampshire R Ayotte loses 51 R 49 D
New York D Schumer wins 51 R 49 D
North Carolina R Burr wins 51 R 49 D
North Dakota R Hoeven wins 51 R 49 D
Ohio R Portman wins 51 R 49 D
Oklahoma R Lankford wins 51 R 49 D
Oregon D Wyden wins 51 R 49 D
Pennsylvania R Toomey Loses 50 R 50 D
South Carolina R Scott wins 50 R 50 D
South Dakota R Thune wins 50 R 50 D
Utah R Less wins 50 R 50 D
Vermont D Leahy wins 50 R 50 D
Washington D Murray wins 50 R 50 D
Wisconsin R Johnson loses 49 R 51 D

The Republicans will lose 5 seats, which could be more depending on who retires and where.

But so much depends on unforeseen events, which issues are hot, who retires, and more. Things one can't enter into the equation today. So this is just a SWAG. Perhaps the most important aspects for 2016 is who will be the presidential candidates and from which states. Then too another unanswered question is will President Obama be able to get his approval rating back up to around 50%. Bush fatigue set in beginning late 2005 and lasted the rest of his term. There was no way a Republican was going to win in 2008. The people were just tired of Republican rule.

The same thing could happen, I said could happen with President Obama. There is no way of knowing. But the Democrats have huge advantage in what I call trustworthy states in the electoral college. Sort of a firewall if you will. It will be extremely difficult for a Republican to win. That is unless Obama fatigue sets in which may have already begun. That remains to be seen. But today I would give 90% odds on having a Democratic President and senate in 2016. Tomorrow, who knows?

I believe the Democrats have been very clear about what their plan is. I refer you to the midterm election of late.

Why did the GOP House of NO wait so long until now?
To preempt Landrieu's bill first and let the chump Cassidy get credit first ?

Oh? If she cared so much, why did she wait 'til now, to introduce the bill?

This issue is dead until the next Congress in sworn in. Will Obama Veto the legislation or sign it?

WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats on Tuesday defeated a bill, 59 to 41, that would have approved the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, rebuffing a Democratic colleague, Senator Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana, who had hoped to muscle the legislation through in advance of her uphill runoff election fight back home.

Forty Democrats and Angus King, independent of Maine, voted against the bill, with just 14 Democrats joining all 45 Republicans in support of the oil pipeline.

Senate Narrowly Defeats Keystone XL Pipeline

People, this has happened how many times before? The Republicans have been doing this for a few years now, putting it up when they know it will fail, likely for several purposes: to keep the issue in the headlines, to draw out any Democrats whose constituents are telling them they want it.

In any event, two things must be kept in mind, one is that next year the Republicans will have enough votes and will send a bill to the White House so Obama is forced to veto it.

Meanwhile here, there is dwindling support for the the XL, as it employs mostly American workers, where if we go with a Northern route, now being planned all those jobs and lease money stays in Canada. Most economists in the oil patch say the XL is dead, for all intents and purposes Obama has killed it

Greetings, pbrauer. :2wave:

I had read the breaking news about this on Yahoo earlier, but they didn't give the vote tally. Thanks for the update - that was nail biting close, and probably very disappointing for Mary Landrieu. The unions seemed to be behind approving the Pipeline, so I don't know if the President will veto it if it comes back again in January.

Good evening polgara, you can address me as Pete, that's my real name.
Mary Landrieu doesn't have a chance of keeping her seat, she is down by 21% in the polls.

No question the messaging campaign from Dems has been horrendous.,
Cotton showed that in Arkansas by lying about social security and Pryor letting him get away with it.

Yet Dems are sticking with the top three idiots they have as albatrosses around our necks--Reid, Pelosi and DWS.
Only Dems like Dean are capable of turning this party inside out.
And just wait for the rhetorical knives to come out from DP Republicans over anyone I suggest.

You are aware that we now have DP posters who now identify as Republicans again, right ?

Whatever the senate repubs would give up in return would be nixed by the repubs in the house.
