US group CAIR named Terrorist organization by United Arab Emirates

A U.S.-based pro-Muslim group that enjoys close ties with the Obama administration has landed on one Arab nation's list of terrorist organizations.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) was one of 82 groups around the world designated terrorist organizations by the United Arab Emirates, placing it in the company of Al Qaeda, Islamic State and others. While CAIR has previously been linked to Hamas, it has held hundreds of meetings with White House officials on a wide range of community issues and has sought to present itself as a mainstream Muslim organization.

United Arab Emirates released a list of designated terrorist groups and organizations over the weekend, with more than 80 different groups from around the world blacklisted. The list covers a variety of well-known names, including al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, al Shabab and Boko Haram.

It is the inclusion of two very specific groups, however, that made the list a hot topic on a number of right wing U.S. news sites. Two American groups that represent Muslims — the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim American Society — had been designated terrorist groups by the Gulf state.

Neither CAIR nor the Muslim American Society are designated terror groups by the U.S. government, which is a major ally and trading partner of the U.A.E., and their inclusion on the list surprised many analysts — especially when more established groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon were left off. CAIR put out a statement that said they were seeking clarification on their "shocking and bizarre" inclusion on the list, while the Muslim American Society said that they had had "no dealings with the United Arab Emirates" and were "perplexed by this news."

CAIR and the Muslim American Society are not alone in their Shock. Diverse groups across Europe were also added to the list, leaving many observers perplexed at the scope and sheer scale of the list. Norway's foreign ministry has already publicly requested an explanation......

CAIR is no stranger to terrorism. In 2007, the radical organization was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Project case (which eventually led to five "charity" members being convicted for sending $12 million in funding to terror group Hamas), openly supports Hamas in its fight against Israel and encourages muslims in America not to work with federal law enforcement agents investigating homegrown terror in Muslim-American communities.

It should be stressed that President Obama often takes advice from CAIR and members of the Muslim Brotherhood about how to define terror and the White House National Security Council regularly consults members of these organizations......snip~

The United Arab Emirates designated two top U.S. Muslim organizations as terrorists groups on Saturday, drawing "shock" and confusion from representatives.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Muslim American Society (MAS) were included in an approved list of designated terrorist organizations under an anti-terror law issued by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Emirates News Agency reported.

"You see across the board groups reacting with shock," CAIR spokesperson Corey Saylor told The Huffington Post by phone.

State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke told reporters on Monday the administration was in contact with UAE officials to seek clarity but would not acknowledge the history of positive interactions between CAIR and the State Department.

CAIR faced scrutiny in 2011 when it was accused of being an “unindicted co-conspirator or joint venturer” with the Holy Land Foundation case -- an Islamic charity that was convicted of funding Islamic militant groups in 2008. A federal Judge Jorge A. Solis denied CAIR's request to be removed from the list of "co-conspirators," which included 245 other groups and individuals, but Washington Post notes that the government has never raised criminal charges against the group.
