Millions of low-income children are missing the free preventive exams and screenings guaranteed by Medicaid, and the Obama administration isn’t doing enough to fix the problem, according to a federal watchdog report.

The report, released Thursday by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General (OIG), says the administration has boosted rates of participation but must do more to ensure that children get the regular wellness exams, dental checkups, and vision and hearing tests. The report notes that 63 percent of children on Medicaid received at least one medical screening in 2013, up from 56 percent in 2006, but still far below the department’s 80 percent goal.

Only Iowa and California exceeded that standard last year, with 81 percent and 99.7 percent, respectively. Alaska and Ohio were below 40 percent. Five more states — Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon and Wyoming — were between 40 and 45 percent.

Child health advocates cite several factors for the low rates, including a shortage of doctors treating Medicaid patients, states’ low pay for providers and parents’ lack of awareness about the importance of the visits.

Children and taxpayers pay a steep price when children’s health problems are not caught early.

Another news telling that our health care system does not work as it is supposed to. The program that goes back to the 60s and takes care of our children’s health shows not that good results.
The article does not give any reasonable explanation, only guesses. So, do you think it’s because of Obamacare malfunction that the system is being destroyed? Or is it the states being resistant to the orders from the federal government spoil everything? Or is just the fact that parent are too irresponsible? Maybe, some other reason?

In other news, parents who get food stamps don't always get up and fix their kids' breakfast before they go to school, parents getting subsidized rent don't necessarily provide for a comfortable place for their kids to live, parents who get social security for their kids don't always spend it on their kids, and homeless parents still use their kids to beg.

All this is, of course, the fault of the current administration in Washington, and not of the (bleep!)ing irresponsible parents who have kids they don't take care of.

Oh, yes, and they don't check their kids homework or see to it that they get to school on time ready to learn. That is obviously the fault of the schools.

As I work for a Medicaid claims processor I can tell you its the irresponsible parent(s). We commit a great many resources to change this behavior not only directed at the member but also the docs.
You can lead a horse to water and all....

I was thinking all this as I was reading the op - do they want Obama to pick up each child and take them to the doctor?

So my tax dollars being used to keep other peoples kids healthy isn't working, and my tax dollars being used to make middle eastern countries more democratic isn't working either. It would actually be more useful to just burn the money than give it to welfare recipients or Arabs. At least it would provide some heat for the winter.

Yes, absolutely. That way, he won't have time to drive around south of the border looking for future Democrat voters to bring to the US, or to come door to door collecting everyone's guns.

But I thought throwing money at problems was the answer.

I am not sure why this is a surprise to anyone. People simply don't value that which they get for free.

Why is California so successful? Is there something we can use in the other states that CA has developed?

Considering the programs created and funded by taxpayers designed to remove parents from caring for their children (Pre-school, meals programs year round, etc.) clearly the government believe parents are too irresponsible.

Well where's the report about kids whose parents DO have insurance and don't take them to the doctor routinely?

A government operated system doesn't work. What's the solution? Another government operated system?

The fault of the schools and really evil teachers.

Filed in the drawer labeled "they pay for their own so we don't care".

But really, I'd think Alaska sounds about right. Short on doctors to begin with, and getting to one from the villages may be problematic. Folks are stuck in one place for months at a time.

many children are also not doing their homework. the blame does not lie solely with the schools.

As you might have noticed, I'm not blaming anyone for this problem. I'm asking questions, offering options and inviting to discuss. So I would be glad to here your point of view on the problem. ;)

This reason seems to me the most logical and obvious too. And while no one can, of course, force parents into taking children to check-ups, others are forced to pay for these absences. The money is just... wasted.

I can't say that these thing remove parents from caring for their chindren. These things just provide citizens with more opportunities plus give the parents opportunity to spwnd more quality time with their kids.

An effective manager doesn't invent a new system when the old doesn't work. First of all, he finds the reasons that caused the malfucntion - and fixes them. I thing that what the government should do.

I, for one, would like to here your point of view, seeing as how you started the thread.

Do you really believe that Medicaid spends money when a parent *doesn't* bring their child to the doctor?
