US Sailors Victims of Videotaped Attack in Istanbul

Do you have links to stories about US servicemen being attacked in US airports? I haven't heard of any incidents.

No, I don't have any links. But you do not see uniformed members in airports traveling like you did when I was in military in early 70's. Maybe some current members of the military here can comment as to whether they are advised or ordered not to wear uniform.

This sort of thing has gone on a very long time. In the 60s sailors could not take shore leave in Sicily because of the rampant anti America sentiment. One other comment though is I thought Obama was going to make the world love us? So much for that.

The ME is in flames , millions upon millions have suffered and continue to suffer in dreadful ways. Hundreds of thousands are dead. Much/most of this can be put down to Western imperialism/meddling and yet.............

A few US sailors get harassed in Turkey and so many posters here infer/demand some sort of retaliatory action.

Some foolishly believe that a bit of public US citizen ire over the incident might have more clout than the US arms industry.

This is just some of the madness that we live in , laid bare. Imagine how people feel that are on the receiving end of what we dish out via our military might , all wrapped up in the sugar coated BS of our own magnificence .

It's enough to make you wanna chuck your guts up

In the 14th year of the US Global War On Terror, 13 years of Death From Above by US Drones, US citizens and especially soldiers and sailors, are not terribly popular in the muslim world.

And the real shock is that so many here in the West don't wish to understand why the two could be connected.

For me it's not a shock. Americans have been thoroughly and professionally propagandized for decades. Pseudo-patriotism is drilled into their brains. It doesn't take long and they live a separate reality.

Glad you made it out safely. Yours are a set of unique eyes so I have to ask, how effective are the Kurds and Iraqi army in fighting ISIS? Are they winning? Could you tell?

I mean they appeared to be very effective in Kobani if only in providing numbers and guns on the ground. They are not very organized and everything is sheer Chaos on the ground with no one really taking the lead and running the show. The Kurds to their credit are a brave bunch and they have the advantage of knowing the terrain however they seem unwilling to help in other regions like Anbar.
The biggest issue is the equipment as they are using some pretty basic stuff. They are fighting an enemy which using boby traps, roadside bombs, mines etc. This is slowing down any progress made from the airstrikes so we need to provide -resistant armored vehicles, bomb defusing robots and advanced technology to counterexplosive devices. They are also using mainly light and medium arms vs ISIS who are using a lot of heavy arms which they picked up last summer from the fleeing Iraq army.
The worry for me is though just from talking to the Kurds is that if they are successful in re-gaining their region they will not continiue to push on, they could be using this as a way of finally breaking away from Iraq and will establish their own territory using the weapons provioded to dig in and defend. I can easily see Iraq breaking up into seperate regions as a result of this fighting which has almost become tribal.

US Sailors Victims of Videotaped Attack in Istanbul - ABC News

Three U.S. sailors were assaulted today by about 20 people on the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, and the assault was videotaped and then posted on the internet, the Navy said. The American embassy said the videotaped assault on the sailors was "appalling."

The Navy said the sailors were on leave from the destroyer USS Ross when about 20 people who claimed to be from the Turkish Youth Union began "verbally and physically assaulting the sailors."

The video shows one of the Turks telling the Americans, "We define you as murderers and killers and want you to get out of our land."

The sailors were then shoved and had things thrown at them. Several of the Turkish men tried to grab one American sailor and white bags were produced which they tried to put over the sailors' head while other Turks chanted, "Go home, Yankee." The sailors wrenched themselves free."

WTF? Turkey is one of our NATO allies, but they allow a cowardly gang of thugs to attack three US sailors? Where the hell were the Turkish police? These sailors were dressed in civilian clothes, yet they were deliberately rooted out, roughed up, had bags shoved over their heads, then they were chased by nearly two dozen of these assholes. And the Turkish government says..... *crickets*.....

Why is Turkey even a part of NATO anyway? It refuses to allow US use of NATO bases in Turkey, it thwarts the US at every turn. Since when does Turkey have the right to pick and choose which NATO countries are "allowed" to use NATO bases, most of which were paid for in large part by US funds. This really chaps my hide.

Obama airdropped weapons shipments to the Kurds in Northern Iraq despite Turkey's strenuous objections and people are wondering why the Turks are mad at us? :doh

I can definitely say they are not religious or pro-goverment.Erdogan's voters don't protest anything trust me.
The protestors were hardcore leftists.

Well, if that's your definition of murder, then every country that ever fought a war is guilty of murder. Which essentially is every country in the world. Your definition doesn't cut it, I'm afraid.

It does when there is no official declaration of war against a state. If we were at war with Iraq then it would be understandable that the Iraqi civilians would be collateral, but, we are at an unofficial war with a nomadic ideology.

You don't make any sense.

US authorization of force in Iraq and Afghanistan is the legalizing of murder in those countries. If we had actually declared war on the countries it would be understandable that there would be civilian collateral.

That's bull****, you read that out of a comic book?

Its no wonder U.S. foreign policy is currently such a disaster. This thread exemplifies the current american response to any situation: gross ignorance and insecure juvenile posturing. "Lets kick turkey out of NATO because some leftwing students attacked U.S. sailors and we are too stupid to know they aren't Islamists." Contrary to popular belief, being a wannabe tough guy in foreign policy doesn't compensate for inadequacies in real life.

Its not. We cannot just go around and kill citizens in sovereign nations. If another nation did that here looking for enemies of their state, we would be outraged, it would never be allowed by the international community.

Our soldiers were under lawful orders, so they weren't murderers.

Just because they had orders that were lawful under US law does not mean they are right. I will say again: put yourselves in the shoes of other countries. Imagine another countries soldiers walking down your street with machine guns, tanks, and heavy artillery. They kill your neighbors and family in endless search for enemies of their state. I highly doubt, despite legal authorization of force in that country, you would feel the same way at that point.

That's political, and another discussion. Our soldiers were under lawful orders.

Islamists are only capable of reaching orgasm inside the voting booth they don't protest anything.

Also a fundamental difference between an islamist protest and a leftlist protest : female students. In this case female students were also detained.Islamists don't consider female students as human beings lol
