Rep. Charles Rangel says he thought cracker was 'a term of endearment'

Why is he not in jail? That's the real question.

Probably because there would be nation wide Ferguson type riots if anyone tried to put him in jail.

Why is he not in jail? That's the real question.

His constituents love him. They fall into the "stupid American voters" group.

And the Dems wouldn't dare jail him. They just gave him a slap on the wrist. Naughty boy.

Greetings, tres borrachos. :2wave:

You gotta admit that over the years he has provided many "comic relief" moments. It's probably why he has lasted so long! No one really cares.....

There are simply no words for this level of stupidity.

Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel meant no disrespect when he previously called Tea Party members “white crackers” — he says it was actually a compliment.

The longtime Capitol Hill Democrat said Monday that he thought cracker “was a term of endearment” and was puzzled by the firestorm that his use of the term in a 2013 interview set off.

In a chat with the Huffington Post on Monday, Rangel offered a half-hearted apology for using the word when comparing the Tea Party to Jim Crow segregationists.

Rangel: Calling Tea Party 'white crackers' was a compliment - NY Daily News

Awesome. Stupid and a crook. What a combination! And he won re-election by a landslide.

There is one way to end hurtful names for different races. Make those names stand for tasty treats. Obviously, "cracker" means what it says. But what about "nigger"? Here is a commercial for a tasty treat called "niggers" to demonstrate this.....

Woman at party: Damn, I see plenty of crackers at this party, but where are the niggers?

Second woman: I see your point. Damn, you just can't have a party without niggers!!

Announcer: Niggers, in the snack food aisle, right next to the Crackers. Don't throw a party without 'em.

It just appears he is like everyone else who picks and choose what they think is offensive. Best bet for a smart person is to simply refuse to use any slang for a group of people.

This pick and choose has been seen here in DP where many would find cracker offensive but okay with Redskins. Another ploy used by the pick and choose group is to throw in the PC card if there is objection to one of there chosen okay slang words.

A person in congress should know better if not then they don't need to be there.

There is a world of difference when referring to a group of people as "crackers" and referring to a sports team name who has a history of honor. Now if someone used the term "redskins" to refer to a group of people and considered that ok you would have a point. But the only time I hear about Redskins now a days is in reference to a sports team and from a group of people trying to force that team to change its name because they don't understand that context matters.

Why can't people understand that context matters in any given situation? For instance I can refer to "niggers" in this post because I'm using it as a reference. Yet if I called a group of black people "niggers" straight out then I would be racist for doing so. Yet just referencing it in order to make a point is not racist in the slightest. Indeed if I or anyone else was considered racist for using the term "nigger" as a reference in order to make a point about racism then no honest talk about racism could ever be done.

Ok so I can think of a number of other terms of endearment that are now free to use.

The bolded parts are so spot on.

The question I have is when are politicians (on BOTH sides of the aisle) going to learn to move their mouths in sync with their brains. It seems they could use some seminars in public speaking.

The problem with ol' Charlie, he has learned to speak to those who vote for him.

Charlie hurls race cards, cheats on his taxes, does suspicious deals, always favorable to him. Headed the committee mostly responsible for the home loan problem, and still wins by a landslide.

Charlie doesn't much care what you think of him.

I called a band mate "Home Slice" one time and he got upset. I told him it was a term of endearment.

Rangel should have known his choice was uncalled for.

I shouldn't laugh, but I did.

The other thing is there really isn't any comparison to the "Redskin" name and what Rangel did. The Redskins have had that name for many decades. For many years nobody said a word about it, and then when our politicians for some reason felt compelled to interject themselves in the discussion, it became a hotly contested issue.

There is debate on the offensive nature of the name of the football team. Some say it is, some say it isn't. It's an old name, and wasn't initially chosen out of disrespect to any group.

Calling a group of people you detest "white crackers", and then feigning ignorance and actually claiming you thought it was a "term of endearment", is just beyond comprehension.

These 2 debates aren't even in the same hemisphere.

Old man not up to speed on current lingo. News at 11.

Personally I find everything offensive, I think we should all just quit talking period.

Yooooou bastard. Do you have any idea how offensive this is?!

Then we'll just change the name of the Redskins to the Crackers, and everybody will be fine. Because. you know, context.

No, the Redskins need to continue their proud tradition of honoring the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

I would say we should call the Cowboys and Vikings "Crackers" and "Crackers II"

As I read through this thread I am thinking of two things,
One Why would Rangel be using a term of endearment in regards to the tea party,
and two, whoever told him that was a good word choice is SO fired!

Why don't they have a team honoring the proud tradition of the Asian people - The Chinks? Make the Celtics change their name to the Dirty Subhuman Micks to honor the proud traditions of the Irish. One for the Arabs called the Towelheads...all we have to do is say we're honoring the tradition, and it'll be fine.

What bout "Nig Nog" since it's the Holiday season... :peace

I grew up with a AA minor league team in Atlanta called the Atlanta Crackers. Also there was a Negro League team in Atlanta named the Atlanta Black Crackers. I think the term along with redneck are terms the Northeast uses to stereotype us Southern types. Now Redneck since Jeff Foxworthy came along is definitely a term of endearment.

But since the Braves moved in from Milwaukee, I do not think I heard the term cracker used hardly at all. Expcept maybe on one of these political sites.

But back in the day, I was one of the biggest Atlanta Cracker fans around.

I said that bolded part in an earlier post. Is anyone stupid enough to believe old Charlie would be using a "term of endearment" for the Tea Party? Seriously?

No white person is offended by "cracker", really now.

that said, rangel is a crook and a scoundrel for so many other reasons. lol

Political Correctness is an invented phenomenon to distract voters from actually expecting politicians to do anything they said they'd do.

How about salsa-flavored gum called Spiclets.

And the context of what you suggest here is changing the name in order to prove a racist charge, this would prove nothing because the context still isn't the same. But I can tell you right now that if a team had the name "crackers" for as long as the Redskins team has had their team name and with the honor that they have, I'd have no problem with the team named such. Why? Because context is everything.
