CNN: 1,500 more troops to Iraq

ISIS exists in Iraq today because president chump left Iraq to the wolves. We left, they filled the vacuum, and as a result many more have been and will be killed. Obama lost the peace in Iraq.

There... was peace in Iraq? Did they legalize marijuana in your state?

Al-Maliki: US Troops Out! | Informed Comment
"I do not care about what’s being said. I care about what’s on paper and what has been agreed to. The withdrawal of forces agreement [Status of Forces Agreement or SOFA] expires on Dec. 31, 2011. The last American soldier will leave Iraq."

Iraq’s Government, Not Obama, Called Time on the U.S. Troop Presence | TIME.com
"In one of his final acts in office, President Bush in December of 2008 had signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with the Iraqi government that set the clock ticking on ending the war he’d launched in March of 2003. The SOFA provided a legal basis for the presence of U.S. forces in Iraq after the United Nations Security Council mandate for the occupation mission expired at the end of 2008. But it required that all U.S. forces be gone from Iraq by January 1, 2012, unless the Iraqi government was willing to negotiate a new agreement that would extend their mandate. And as Middle East historian Juan Cole has noted, “Bush had to sign what the [Iraqi] parliament gave him or face the prospect that U.S. troops would have to leave by 31 December, 2008, something that would have been interpreted as a defeat… Bush and his generals clearly expected, however, that over time Washington would be able to wriggle out of the treaty and would find a way to keep a division or so in Iraq past that deadline.”

But ending the U.S. troop presence in Iraq was an overwhelmingly popular demand among Iraqis, and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki appears to have been unwilling to take the political risk of extending it. While he was inclined to see a small number of American soldiers stay behind to continue mentoring Iraqi forces, the likes of Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, on whose support Maliki’s ruling coalition depends, were having none of it. Even the Obama Administration’s plan to keep some 3,000 trainers behind failed because the Iraqis were unwilling to grant them the legal immunity from local prosecution that is common to SOF agreements in most countries where U.S. forces are based.

You are tap dancing around again. Obama is not some disinterested spectator here, HE is POTUS and HE decided to pull out for his PERSONAL political gain.

To try to blame ISIS on Bush or Maliki is just silly, and the American people aren't buying it.

Just Obama's Iraq right? Not Bushes. Not our foreign policy for the last 14 years right? Just Obama's fault.

It's been more then 14 years, remember what Eisenhower said about the military industrial complex and Kermit Roosevelt's involvement in Iran 1953

:doh Dear God. Alright, rewrite history so it can fit your agenda.

Serious question for those who say we pulled out too early and/or pulled out irresponsibly: When would be a good time? Or, phrased differently, do you honestly see a point where we would have ever "won" and thus been able to pull out responsibly?

I don't. Maybe you do, and if so, please tell us how and when.

Sorry that is Maliki in his own words and literally how it happened. We were willing to leave troops behind in Iraq, Maliki wanted some as well, however Maliki's own men and government did not want them.

Its propaganda, as transparent as his waiting until after the election to announce an escalation.

We have been bombing Iraq and Syria for months, and continue to increase the numbers of troops there. ISIS has attempted to attack the US, and our allies have committed to fighting ISIS.

The question, is what to call this...is it still the Iraq war? Iraq war 3? The ISIS war?

We call this failed foreign policy that hasn't changed in a long long time

probably when it was likely that an islamic caliphate marauding through syria and iraq would be difficult to fathom. instead we supported the arab spring.... and got the troops out, giving the islamic fascists exactly what they wanted, and had planned for since 9/11

he he he...

It hurts eh?

yes, it is Obama's Iraq, the world has been calling it that.

He defined it when he pulled out to look good for 2012, he owned it when he mission creeped Libya and created ISIS, and he bought it when he decided he was going back in with this "no boots on the ground" limited engagement.....

Classic Obama and his lame brained supporters to take six long years of lies and politicizing EVERY issue and insist Obama has had no effect. Unfortunately, his incompetence and making everything about his image is coming home to roost...it's payback time.

This will go down in history as "Obama's war" and I believe stands a good chance of being Obama's Katrina.

Of course he waited till after the election..everything with this guy is about his personal image...notice also its leaked on a Friday...

Thats a good name, Obama's war. And the friday after an election is exactly when reality comes out of the Obama white house.

Sure it is  I'm guessing the parliament vote was "propaganda" as well.

Or maybe when we realized we were trillions and trillions of dollars in debt and that we could never win this war.

...Said Obama to the mirror.

:lamo I love it. I provide sources of people in their own words, and a clear historical outline of what happened. Then you just say "nauh! Its all Obama's fault! Its propaganda".

There are numerous factors here, but the short answer is we should have stayed as long as it takes, a small force for 20 years+, in light of the realities there. We still have a presence in Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea.

Frankly many of the issues are generational and not likely to subside overnight. You stay until the job is done, not until a date you announce to your enemies.

These terrorists think we dont have the resolve and that if they out wait us, or bloody our nose that we will leave-and have said as much. Note that this isn't different from what the left wants to do.

Obama's Iraq is coming home to roost. More troops tk, and 5 billion dollars. And its transparently clear that he didn't want this announcement made until after the elections, this allowed him to avoid the headlines on tuesday, and appear to be working with republicans today (to clean up his own mess).

Obama didn't break Iraq.

We will never get out of there completely.

How soon some forget history..
Remember Al-Maliki calling for us to get out of his country? Remember the Iraqi Parliament vote? Also ISIS (formally known as Al-Qaeda in Iraq) was formed in 2004.

Indeed. This is the result of Obama's inability, and some say lack of commitment and prioritization of, achieving a Status Of Forces agreement with Maliki.

 Maliki wanted a minimum of 10K troops left behind in Iraq. The President told him he was on his own. Witness the results of the "not our problem" foreign policy.

I seem to recall this.

Obama wanted the headline of "ending the war in Iraq", and he was willing to get that by leaving Iraq to ISIS. Iraq wanted us there, Obama wanted us out. This is the result. As disturbing, he now wants to do the same in Afghanistan.

Umm, already has to some extent. I don't believe that the US have a Status Of Forces agreement with the Afghans, so likely the same series of events. Another failure of Obama's.

A destabilized region with a power vacuum and lots of well armed and experienced islamists. Apparently Obama saw no problems with this. :doh

Or it was just an impossibility. The Iraqi government telling us to kick rocks, and the Iraqi government not granting legal immunity to troops stationed there...
