Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black congre

It's a bad thing to pigeonhole African Americans into a political viewpoint, but unfortunately, many conservatives do not help matters by perceiving African Americans in many unflattering ways. I dislike both the Uncle Tom moniker placed on African American conservatives as I do the welfare queen/thug rhetoric given by conservatives.
What conservatives are portraying African Americans in unflattering ways? You can use quotes and name these people and we'll all turn on them.

But it does seem leftism is all about perception, not knowledge, and are remarkably easy to lead. The origin of the term "welfare Queen" was thought to be Jet Magazine, designed and marketed for Black people. Welfare queen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black congre

Depends, will you still call Democrats racist after they elected the first black president? ;) Doubt it.
Race obviously played a more important part in his election than experience or capability. In fact there were charges by the left that anyone who didn't support Obama or his policies was racist.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

Some of the old white men in the GOP are racist and sexist homophobes-but not all of them.
Why not name them?

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black congre

It's not the dems using those lies for their own gains. Here's some 2012 right wing presidential candidates using the 'welfare queen' mantra....

“I don’t want to make black peoples’ lives better by giving them somebody else’s money,” - Rick Santorum in Iowa.

Here's Mitt....

All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them." And they're hopeless. "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
None of them used the term "Welfare Queen". If you disagree with anything these candidates said why not address their points directly and they can then be honestly discussed?

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

No, I think she will remain the only black female Republican member of the House of Representatives. Can't see that changing.

It would spell disaster for you if it did.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

Your accusation in this post of me using a "forced neutral term" is a lie. Goodbye.
I don't think so. See you later.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

No doubt about it - you are a frickin' genius! :lamo
Actually Leftist criticism of Mia Love, like Republican women before her, or other Black candidates, was not that difficult to predict. Leftists may not understand public policies but they can tell the difference between Black and White.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

For at least half a century, the party of Lincoln has battled charges that it is racist, sexist and anti-immigrant.

Today, voters from a conservative state made those arguments a little bit harder to make. In Utah, Mia Love became the first black Republican woman — and first Haitian American — elected to Congress.

For the GOP — a house divided that faces significant demographic hurdles to winning the White House in 2016 even as it celebrates President Obama’s shellacking — this was huge. A party threatened with electoral extinction among African Americans and immigrants now has someone to brag about in Washington. In a wave election less about fresh Republican ideas than fervid disapproval of all things presidential, Love’s compelling personal story is an oasis. She’s not just a black face in what’s often described as a party full of angry old white men. She’s a path forward.

Good for her. I've followed her for a while now. The daughter of Haitian immigrants.

So much for all Republicans being racist and sexist.

This is great!

This doesn't erase the "birther" movement, but it sure is progress.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

Well that's too bad. I'd vote to send another black Republican female to send to Congress if my district puts the right one up. I guess you won't. Your choice.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

I think there is a lot of good to be said about her. She definitely will have a different perspective of the world considering how her life growing up is far different than say a Mitt Romney who grew up with abundance.

Congrats to her for accomplishing this, but it appears instead of praising this accomplishment there is more of a in your face Democrats attitude here. That reminds me of the "I have a friend who is black" sentiment.
Maybe it's because you're not honest enough to see this stereotype you're pushing for what it is.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

I'm not sure what the "I have a friend who is black" sentiment means, or what it has to do with her.

I like your bolded sentence. That's what appeals to me about her. I'm tired of the generational politicians and the children of privilege going to DC and spending our money frivolously, and pontificating with the old "I care about you, I know what it's like to be in your shoes" horse****. She really does know. Not only is she a first generation American, she seems to have lived a very normal middle class life. College, flight attendant, a few corporate jobs, married, 3 kids, voice for issues in her family's community.....she's more like most of us than most of the rest of them are. Fresh faces are good and sorely needed in DC, especially the ones who seem like they're "real" Americans (if that makes sense).
Agreed. It's too bad the racists here will try to tear her down for not fitting the mold they're comfortable with.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black [W:110

Some people just don't get it. If the Republicans didn't actually have a history of having racists undertones then this one congresswoman shouldn't be having this ticker tape parade. The way they are drooling over her is if she had discovered the cure for Ebola. The one accomplishment listed was her persuading developers to spray for flies.

It reminds me of those people who like to point out to you that they do have one black friend. Ok.
I don't think the Republican party today is racist nor do I think the Mormon church is racist. But one cannot deny that the Mormons didn't feel black should hold superior office in its church until 1978.

So continue with the ticker tape parade you finally have that one black friend.

Really, then explain Obama as a Democrat. Shouldn't have been a big deal at all, right?

To read some of the posts in this thread, there's anger about her winning....and it seems to be coming from the ones who vote Democratic (with a few exceptions who seem genuinely happy for Love).

I don't support the idea of anchor babies, but I'm surprise after learning this that she's a Republican and not a Democrat, given that Democrats support citizenship by any means. Also surprising how Democrats are being negative, since she got here just how they like it. They should be cheering. They probably feel she betrayed them.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black congre

Yes, righties voting for a black republican proves they're not racist. Righties not voting for a black dem is of no significance

If i had a nickle for every time i heard, "How can i be racist, i know lots of black people and have black friends" i would have a lot of nickles.

Re: Meet Mia Love. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Republicans’ first black congre

No, they'll use it for all its worth, and keep beating that drum until there isn't an audience any longer. It's going to be a long time coming.

You're right, it will be a long time coming.

That's not because a broken drum is being beaten, but because Love's election is no more of an indication that racism/sexism is dead in the Republican party, then a black president is an indication that racism is dead in the US (or in politics).

Systemic racism and sexism are still problems in the US as a whole, and, surprise surprise, in the republican party. You can't measure the elimination of racism or sexism by how well the top 1% of the group are doing, but by the majority of said group. It's going to be a long time coming because we're still a ways from the finish line.

Yesterday was a great leap towards that finish line however and I applaud Love.

No she isn't.

Oh, did I just get punked? I didn't read past the headline.

edit: oh, congresswoman, right. Well still, congratulations, and welcome to the 20th century!

JC Watts was black. Tim Scott was a Congressional rep before he was a Senator. Allen West was a black Conrgressperson. There may have been others but I'm very blonde today. Not enough sleep.

You would think people in the Democratic Party would be happy for her success given her background and everything else.

...And on a somewhat related note, you would think everyone would be happy about Republican Elise Stefanik becoming the youngest Congresswoman ever elected too.

Except you said the 20th century. We're in the 21st century. I think we both need more sleep.
