GOP seizes Senate

currently there is about 387 bills the house has passed and Reid will not allow the come up for a vote on the senate floor.

there has been almost no voting in the senate over the last few years.

Exactly. Harry Reid is a colossal failure as Majority Leader. He spent more time worrying about the names of NFL teams and calling the Koch Brothers "un-American" than he did worrying about doing his job.

What is NOT the norm is a president who has shown such hostility toward his fellow lawmakers.

Recall please that one mister William Clinton ended up in a similar situation and, it seems, he did well, retiring from office one of the most popular presidents of the modern era. There were others, in both parties, Ronald Reagan, Johnson, Eisenhower too, and FDR, well he spent nearly 15 years assuaging egos....

But here we have a petty little king/rock star, who got little done when he had a majority, spent the first two years whining about "I inherited this mess" and the next four blathering "they won't let me."

That is an historic new low and it is only right that the American people now turn their hopes and dreams to the only available alternative, a GOP who hopefully, for them, will not once again circle their wagons and start shooting inward.

But, seriously folks, anyone who thinks anything is going to get accomplished in the next two years is dreaming in technicolor

You summed Obama perfectly. And the difference between him and former Presidents like Reagan, Clinton and the others was assessed and judged last night. This will be his legacy.

Oooooh. The Republicans have taken over the Senate.

GOP seizes Senate - CNN.com

(I didn't see another thread on this, so if this is a dupe, please let me know.)
The only "dupe" in this thread would be someone who ignorantly downplays the huge significance, both literally with respect to legislation, and symbolically with respect to it representing the attitude of the great majority of Americans, of the Republicans gaining control of the Senate.

Quick question. All the bills that were not moving to the floor for a vote will now have a chance to come to the floor, or will they have to be revoted in the house? I think they can come straight up, but I am not 100%. Can anyone educate me on this?

The newly elected won't be seated until the next congress commences, so, those bills will have to be re-voted in the house.

by the numbers

As I have been saying for quite a while now, the best thing that could have happened to the Democratic Party last night was for the GOP to take back control of the Senate by a few vote margin. And thankfully, that is exactly what we got. That was Step #1.

Step #2 depends on the GOP in Congress. I predict they will go all out with all sorts of right wing pieces of legislation and many will actually get passed by both houses and be sent to the desk of the President.

Step #3 depends on President Obama. If he can grow a pair between now and then, he can stand up strong and forcefully and VETO those bills that are too far to the right for the American people. And if he has the guts to do that, he should do so very loudly and very publicly and with all the the righteous condemnation of an Old Testament prophet berating the sinners that he can muster. The American people must know that he will not allow the right wing to take over the nation and pass a political and ideological that destroys 120 years of progress by turning back the clock to the Gilded Age. Of course, Obama has never been a street fighting man - and that is one of the biggest let downs to people like me who voted and worked to get him elected in 2008. But he will need to adopt that rule to save the country from the right wing hordes.

Step #4 is for the GOP and their supporters to get angry and mad and irate and see this as a betrayal of the will of the people to turn to the right (and of course it is not given the nature of these mid term election with a lower dem turnout than in presidential years) and accuse Obama of obstruction. This will only inspire them to stay hard right and not give an inch or modify their views and bills.

Step #5 is for the GOP to embrace a strong right wing candidate in 2016 to bear their standard for President setting up an election reminiscent of 1964 when the GOP turned to the far right and came up with Barry Goldwater. My personal pick would be Rand Paul or Ted Cruz.

Step #6 is election night when we see a rerun of 64 with the GOP going down to defeat all over the nation with a few pockets of exception and the Democratic party sweeps to victory taking back Congress, winning the White House and taking back some parts of state legislatures and governor ships in the landslide.

There you go EB - by the numbers steps 1 through 6.

Really? Even better than the majority sweep you and colleagues have been predicting?

This is quite an interesting spin, and, frankly, laughable.

The remainder is predicated on myth and that the "reasonable" Democrats like lizard-brain Harry Reid actually think before they speak. I'm sorry to inform you that for your scenario to be even remotely possible, every Democrat in the House to date will have had to grow a conscience.

meanwhile, you ignore the cheap, gutter ploy already in ploy by your sleazy president where he is already gearing up to rush through tons of bills while he still has a Senate majority.

What is classic and obvious in all of your post is that the Democrats have NO intention of trying to work with the new reality.

Yes. We certainly want the Irish Repbublican Army outlawed. Or did you mean Individual Retirement Accounts?

Or did you mean the IRS? Because theres nothing that says 'freedom' than taking away the ability of the government to actually collect money to govern.

i can only hope they do crazy **** like you mentioned. That sets the stage for their spectacular death now that they have to actually do something rather than complain about the democrats.

Believe it or not, our Government governed longer without the IRS than it has with it. Income tax, too.

You summed Obama perfectly. And the difference between him and former Presidents like Reagan, Clinton and the others was assessed and judged last night. This will be his legacy.

I have said from the beginning, that in the end, Obama will be judged and a somewhat less than mediocre president in the day to day running of the White House, his choices for cabinet etc., that he will be seen in the retrospective of time as exactly what he is, a rock star personality out of his league and too immature to work as a team player.

He's the modern Carter, a fresh new face, with great words and a killer smile who, in the end, was more comfortable making up the White House tennis schedule than dealing with the hostage crisis.

Yep, he blocked all the stupid proposals.

Yep, he blocked all the stupid proposals.

well then it puts to rest the notion the house is a do nothing house, since it put forth ...........387 bills it certainly did many things.

so what will all of the next legislative bills passed by the house be in 2015?

Many of us so called lefties don't like Reid either. He's McConnell's counterpart.

Yea but you guys seem a little down.

Look at this as a opportunity for Obama to save what's left of his Presidency and his legacy.

He could start passing some of those Jobs bills that have been sitting stagnant on Rieds desk.

He could agree to repeal Obamacare ( its a disaster )

He could vow to work with the Republicans for the good if the Country.

also in 2008 the democrats by predication stated the republican party was done ,that it would never rise again, it was dead..........i dont think we saw that.

And pigs with wings will fly, Americans will ban guns outright and the ocean will freeze

Yep, he blocked all the stupid proposals.

Please list them and why they are "stupid."

Please also indicate what is the general opinion of the electorate on these and whether Harry Reid's sole decision to withhold them from debate and therefor full disclosure to the American people is one of sound democratic principles or the vengeful ravings of a madman from the most corrupt city in North America who runs around screaming "terorrists, jihadists and traitors" at his fellow elected lawmakers.

Your mr. Reid's sanity is more than a little suspect.

Three weeks ago, in this form, I read how Obama was going to retake the House and gain seats in the Senate.

I have my issue with the American right, but stupid, propaganda predictions is not one of them. The **** that comes out of the mouths of the American left, including the media spin doctors is an insult to the intelligence to my guppies.

1.) i dont see the hostility above average
2.) would depend on who you ask, some people hate those guys too and say the same thing you are saying about them, not agreeing of disagree just saying
but that was my point both bush, Clinton and Reagan had the same thing happen(houses flip). its the norm
3.) again dont see that any more than other presidents, must be the independent in me
4.) again this is nothing new by the sheep. and also thats not what america should do at all. More and more people need to vote issues and voting records and not pay one bit of attention to party.

but on a side note i do partially agree, it would be AWESOME for the GOP to listen to the people, be more moderate and do things based on wants and needs and not biased stereotypical ideology (like both parties do)

5.) agreed

We can only hope for the best.
Since the GOP will have solid majorities in both the House and Senate they should be able to implement their wondrous agenda.
Can't blame the gridlock on Harry Reid anymore.
We shall soon see.

No...however they can blame still blame it on Barack Hussein Obola.

No...however they can blame still blame it on Barack Hussein Obola.
Which of course they will.
I would also say that the Prez will have an opportunity to blame Congress.
He can veto bills he considers "draconian", "ill-conceived", "harmful", etc.
If Obama plays his cards right, he can appear to be the wise leader preventing--to borrow a GOP phrase--"the destruction of America".

BZZZT. Same 'ol day for right wingers.

Yes, as hard as it is to believe, GOP voters were actually dumb enough to think that voting these clowns into the Senate will actually lead to

1) Repeal of Obamacare
2) Deportation of ALL non-White undocumented immigrants
3) Fuel prices down to $1 w/the opening of the Keystone pipeline
4) More jobs for the uneducated (i. e. right wing-voting blue collar workers)

Only one logical response to such a belief. . .

rolling-on-the-floor-laughing-smiley-emoticon.gif

You are ofcourse making it up as you go along.

1. Conservatives do not expect that Obamacare will be repealed as long as "Hussein" Obama is still in office...however the republicans can start chopping it up in bits and push alternatives.

2. No...we do not expect illegals will be deported, however we can hopefully slow down and stop Obama from instantly increasing their numbers in the millions.

3. Opening the Keystone Pipeline would exert downward pressure on gasoline prices, however more needs to be done. We need to completely wean ourselves off of middle eastern oil. That would at least result in the price of a gallon of gas incrementally falling below the $2.00. mark.

4. What do you think is going to happen to the blue collar job market if "Hussein" Obola instantly adds a few million illegals?

Konservatives never seem unable to surpass our estimates of their stupidity  Apparently, rush hasn't told the right wingers that a party needs 60 seats to stomp filibusters from the opposing party. Hello?!

Perhaps nobody has informed you that the republicans can work around filibusters in the same manner the democrats did with obamacare. They can use the reconciliation method that needs a simple majority vote.

It will be interesting to see if Obama takes a page from Bill Clinton and actually works in good faith with congress to get things done. It worked out very well for the country in the 90s and the opportunity is there for the same setup to work again now.

Obama had that chance after the 2010 midterms and was too much of a narcissist to admit that his policies were the biggest single reason the democrats were drubbed.

The Republicans better be careful, though. If they take their majority and use it to peruse partisan endeavors instead of focusing on real problems they're going to pay dearly in 2016. I HOPE that they go about their business in a professional manner and pass bills that the American people actually want passed. If they do this then they can put it all on the President to sign them into law or not.

It depends on what you mean by partisan endeavors. What they need to do is start listening to the mainstream conservative base and start honoring the republican platform they keep renewing at convention time rather then just giving it lip service. They need to stand for something. The voters who just returned them to majority status are not looking for leftwing-lite.
If the establishment republicans again go to war with the tea party, they will likely lost majority status either in 2016 or 2018.

Liberals have arrogantly declared countless times here that Republicans are done as a legitimate party.

Midterms are when the adults vote. Democrats better find a dynamic personality somewhere if they expect the kids to show up in '16 like they did for Obama.

Yes...I remember. They declared that the republicans would never win the white house again or regain control of congress.

Unfortunately for Hillary, she doesn't play basketball and nobody cares what's on her iPod. How does she expect younger voters to turn out in droves?

She can promise not to wear a bathing suit in public again.

This actually gives the GOP a pretty solid strategy for 2016 if they are smart enough to use it.

With every bill that is passed by congress and vetoed by the president they can make sure that someone asks for Hilary's opinion on Obama's veto. Over the next two years test Hilary's willingness to be connected to Obama's legacy.
