Apple CEO Tim Cook comes out: 'I'm proud to be gay'

How many people have to come out before people coming out is no longer news?

They have an agenda, so they'll keep coming out and making news.

So you cannot relate. Exactly what I thought.

Not really. I have watched it and read the research, know the numbers. But I never had a problem with being a member of a minority.; at least never more than a stranger in a strange land.

Most of the persons i have known well, that belonged to most minorities didn't have many
problems either. Of course, that is certainly different, if you are an illegal immigrant or poor, illiterate or some such. But the gays or blacks I've known didn't run around with chips on their shoulders and felt fine. Sorry to hear you have a problem.

Seems so odd....to be proud of that.

It never occurred to me to be proud that I'm straight.

So just because the gays and blacks that you know have never felt like they didn't belong or never felt slighted (at least not that you know) so that means that discrimination doesn't happen. That is a pretty closed-minded take.

And no, I don't have a problem, thanks. But I have this ability to not judge and make an effort to try and understand where people are coming from.

You don't seem to understand.

If you get treated like a second class citizen because of your sexual preference for long enough, the tendency is to either celebrate who you are or stay in the closet. As we all know now, those who choose to live a lie end up -- understandably -- pretty ****ed up. Fighting who you naturally are often leads to personal destruction.

Pride started because:
1) It's a way for gays to no longer feel shame and celebrate who they are naturally.
2) It's a way to meet others who've experienced similar 'shame.'
3) It's a way to encourage gays to be who they are and come out of the closet.
4) It's a way the help gay family members to understand.

Heterosexual people -- like you and I -- do not need any form of celebration because we are not repressed because of our sexuality.

I thought you had a problem. ;)

I wonder if the complainers of gay bigotry in the US would rather live in Russia, where they would be flogged daily for their support of homosexuality. Next time you're busy hating, think about that.

For ****'s sake, American, that has got to be the silliest reasoning I have ever read. So just because there is less food availability in Africa than in the US, people in the US should not starve? C'mon... homosexuality acceptance has come a long way... but there is still discrimination. And comparing it to another country does not make it go away.

No, it's about the constant complaining of bigotry and oppression. This website is jam packed with gay marriage threads, yet in Russia you can't even come out of the closet. People need to get a perspective.

Does anyone really care about the sexual orientation of public figures? I don't get the infatuation with it. I've never given a second thought about it. I just don't get, especially now when it seems like coming out is done daily, that people think it's a big deal.

Not only that, but in the grand scheme of things, who really gives a crap? Does it effect the quality of Apple products? No it doesn't. So who cares?

I can think of a few. But naming names is a no no.

All I am saying, and I think, or would like to think that the majority of rational people have similar thoughts, NO ONE cares anymore what people do behind their own doors. It is this constant pushing it in peoples faces that angers them. Think about it, would appreciate it if the meme were constantly "I'm straight, and you need to know it and get down on bended knee"...

Note to American: Bigotry and oppression happen in the US. Still. And why you feel like it's whining is beyond me.

Because people act like it's the most important issue in the galaxy, it's not.

That something "exists" under ever shifting definitions doesn't mean that they are, or should be at the forefront of every damned charge.

It's important for gay people to feel like first-class citizens, no?

Yes, but not at the expense of all other things. I don't respect single-issue voters.

Spoken like someone who does not understand what it's like being a second-class citizen.

So what other issues suffer because gay people want to be treated like everyone else?

It seems to me that many hyperfocus on that issue, but are difficult to be found when other more global issues such as the economy are being discussed. In fact many on the Left hate the Tea Party for trying to reduce the spending in Washington, that could actually benefit them; but have a march for gay marriage and they're all over it including in the forums. They get all angry when people on the Right don't provide their support for gay marriage, but don't want to support the causes the affects more then just themselves. That's partly why I stay out of those threads the vast majority of the time. They are one issue voters, just like the pro-choice crowd. Nothing else seems to matter.

How does one get to a place where they think they are capable of speaking for everyone? I can assure you, there are plenty of folks right here on this forum that do. This place is teeming with homophobes.

It is this constant pushing it in peoples faces that angers them.

Oh you mean like those on the religious right?

Think about it, would appreciate it if the meme were constantly "I'm straight, and you need to know it and get down on bended knee"...

Spend one day in the shoes of a gay man or woman applying for a job at a right wing business and then get back to me.

Yeah, we on the left take human rights pretty seriously. Shame on us.

I didn't realize gay marriage was a human right. Doesn't change my point about single issue voting. Shame on you.
