Laura and Barbara Bush were fabulous first ladies and still are.

I think of no good reason to resort to the childish ranting you put forth - we could get into a pissing contest about which congressman did what and what party he belongs to ... but for no good purpose. So the Vice President's son, who presumably has Secret Service protection, was found positive for cocaine. Unless he grew and processed it himself, he got it from someone. Come on Hunter, you can keep your administrative discharge if you provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of your source, or you can receive a dishonorable discharge.

If the laws aren't going to be repealed, then enforce them.

I'm not sure that it's getting worse. I think the digital age has made it more "in our face" and easy to find. Once upon a time in America, decent people respected the privacy of the family members of elected officials (and any other "public" figure for that matter). Sadly, that isn't the case anymore.

Remember, this is a country that thinks the Kardashians are an interesting family. Nothing shocks me anymore.
 
Are " people familiar with the matter" the new "sources"? I guess they don't want to write "some clerk we paid off to break privacy laws", "some hacker who sold us a batch or stolen data" or "someone we're blackmailing to get information". The head of the NSA should get a press-pass and everything they've done wrong would be magically forgotten.

Oh, exactly. I've never seen their show, but I read about them at my favorite gossip site, DListed, and think of them, as Michael K says, as the "Kartrashians."

Here's what I meant by getting worse. Although I've read claims to the contrary here at DP, I don't recall ugly remarks about Amy Carter when she was a child. But ugly people made fun of Chelsea Clinton for being homely, and that really ticked me off and still does. But the Bush twins were continually called sluts, and ugly people also talked about Laura Bush being a murderer. That's a step beyond.

I think Michelle Obama has had it a lot easier than Laura Bush, so frequently depicted as a "Stepford wife," and I am really grateful that folks have left her daughters alone.

And that's the thing--the focus should be on the candidate. In this case of this thread, what possible relevance has this disgrace of Biden's 43-44-year old son? None, that's what, and if your ideas are valuable, you don't need to stoop to smears.

I remember jokes about Amy Carter when I was a kid. I even remember a Saturday Night Live (I think?) skit about "Little Four Eyes" where the Jimmy Carter character was discussing nukes with another actor playing a kid with gigantic coke bottle glasses and pigtails.

I agree that they take it too far, but I actually saw the story on Biden's son on MSNBC's home page late last night after the AP picked it up, and it was even on the morning shows. While I so agree with your point that personal attacks on the families are lousy, I can't really say that this is a personal attack on Biden's son. It's reporting the news.

Seems the liberal mouthpieces got their knickers all in a twist recently because there was a drunken brawl at a family party that Palin attended. Nothing illegal like drug abuse. Palin isn't even vice president. Yet the little libbies seemed to want to give a rat's ass.

I think this topic is an excellent one for the sake of pointing out the hypocrisy of liberals yet one more time.
