SECOND Dallas Hospital Worker Tests Positive for Ebola

You said or implied it is spreading like wildfire everywhere. Other than some of the West African countries that is not the case. And in fact Nigeria has halted it's progress in their country.

But hey go ahead with the hyperbole if it makes you feel better.

Don't be complacent. It could develop into epidemic at your end.

So your course of action, is to do nothing. Thanks.

These nurses came into direct contact with symptomatic person and their fluids who had Ebola, they got the disease exactly as we know how transmission occurs.

The question is at what point in time did the transmission occur and how... was it during the exercise, taking off the equipment, disposal of contaminated materials, that's what needs to be determined.

But I stress this, plenty of people suffering from Ebola have been repatriated, treated and other healthcare professionals have not contracted the virus, so we need to determine how this occurred and stop it from happening because nothing has changed in the way this virus transmits itself.

The media is throwing around wild and crazy theories out there about transmission changes, but I would remind you its the same media that once propogated the insane notion that the Hydron Super Collider could start a black hole.

Well, no. We don't know that they came in direct contact with bodily fluids. Right now we ASSUME their protective gear was compromised.

This statement is self defeating. You can't logically say you don't know how they were infected and then claim to know how they were infected.

The fact is that Ebola is proving more virulent than was previously believed. The problem with an Ebola outbreak of this scale is that as an RNA virus Ebola mutates several times per host in response to the hosts immune defenses. The more infections the greater the chances that Ebola has to become more virulent. Ebola, until now, has remained contained and less virulent because of the lack of availability of hosts, lack of transport, and quick lethality. All this together ensured that the virus had limited chances to mutate.

Now that it has broken out into dense populations with access to rapid deployment all over the globe the rate of mutation has increased dramatically. I don't think there is much to fear about the strain of Ebola that Duncan brought to the US, but I do think their is reason to fear the strains of Ebola to come as the number of infected in Africa reach into the millions. As a society we are behaving no differently than either of those nurses who are now infected, relying on bad protocols and an poor understanding of the threat to keep us safe.

Greetings, jmotivator. :2wave:

The WHO predicts that 1.4 million people worldwide will have contracted Ebola by early January 2015, then using those numbers to indicate that the number of infected people will double every 20 days, due to contact with those who may not know they are infected because of the 21 day incubation period, no matter what country they are in, by May of 2015 the disease will be unstoppable, in their opinion. They maintain that the disease should have been stopped at the source in West Africa, and contained there, but it wasn't, hence their prediction. I hope they are wrong, but who knows? We do know that whole villages were wiped out in West Africa, and they are just as human as a person living anywhere else in the world, though..... scary! :afraid:

This is clearly the hospital's fault. I haven't heard of health care workers getting infected in the atlanta or nebraska and they have had ebola patients.

Nah. Dollars to donuts it's the health care workers themselves. Guarantee you these two are face-touchers like me.

Every time I get sick I manage to get conjunctivitis (not streptococcus) in one or two eyes, because I can't stop myself from rubbing my eyes or touching my face.

The other State used the experimental drug ZMapp on those two patients.

There is no more ZMAPP.

Im talking about transmission, and how there was none at that hospital.

But, but, Perry said Texas had this one covered. State of the art hospitals with the best people in the country to deal with the virus. What happened? LOL

Where is he anyway? Oh that's right he's conveniently in Europe. Just like our congress critters are on break - again.

Did you forget BO peep also telling people it was covered in Texas? That the US was prepared and we could handle it. That he didn't think it would break out here. What Happened? Even worse....why was BO telling the rest of the planet about it?

Also both sides of the aisle have had people out saying the US could handle it. So save all the BS about Perry.

From what i have read the hospitals have no idea what they are doing and nurses are being put at risk.

So does South Africa, Uganda, Mali, South Sudan, Gabon and the Congo also make up West Africa. But hey....how about at least trying to know a little something something. Rather than just talk ****.

It does sound like this hospital was not prepared for this level of infectious virus.
Dallas nurses allege 'no protocol, no system' in treatment of Ebola patient | Fox News
The caregivers at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital alleged that Duncan was left in an open area of the hospital's emergency room for hours and that nurses worked for days without protective gear

Well the fact of the matter is, is that quite a number of Ebola patients have been treated in the west and so far, only these two in Texas and the Spanish nurse have fallen ill
In America, only in this Texas hospital did the patient, Duncan, initially walk into the hospital all on his own, on Thursday, September 25th, and touch and contaminate surfaces and come in contact with healthcare workers who were not suspecting he had Ebola and weren't wearing protective gear.

In the other hospitals the patients entered under the standard CDC protective protocols.

In all of the U.S. hospitals, many healthcare providers treated the patients.

In Texas, we are still within the 2 to 21 days incubation period since Duncan walked in the first time on Thursday, September 25th.

If there was a breach in protocol of caring for an Ebola patient, a breach due to communications problems or whatever in the Texas hospital, we'd likely have a whole lot more than two of the 76+ healthcare workers who treated Duncan since his "official" Ebola entry on Sunday, September 28th, who'd be exhibiting symptoms by now.

No article I've read presents that "all healthcare workers who came in contact with Duncan on Thursday, September 25th, were immediately quarantined" and it is perhaps likely that the two healthcare workers who've come down with Ebola were contaminated on Thursday, September 25th, during their normal rounds.

The CDC is so "busy" focusing on care Duncan received while admitted to the hospital that they appear to be ignoring the very real possibility these workers contracted the virus on Thursday, September 25th, not on or after Sunday, September 28th.

Perhaps it's because the CDC can present the illusion of being in control of making changes in the former scenario or can blame it on personnel making a mistake, but are simply at the mercy of the circumstances of who picked up the virus on Thursday, September 25th, in the second scenario, something over which they have no damage-control "don't panic" line they can present at this point, that the CDC continues to talk about the post-9/28/14 contamination possibility .. but are completely ignoring the 9/25/14 contamination possibility which is the common method by which epidemics occur.

Friday, October 17th, will be 22 days after Duncan first walked into the hospital on Thursday, September 25th.

Then we'll see if any more of the 76+ healthcare workers who treated Duncan come down with Ebola.

This one knew what she was doing.....and she even took notes of all who came in and out and things done. But now Freidman is saying maybe if the CDC had sent a response team she would not have been infected.

Nurse infected with Ebola knew risks of her work

A Texas nurse who contracted Ebola while caring for an infected Liberian man graduated from nursing school four years ago and was certified in critical care procedures two months before the disease arrived in the United States. Nurse Nina Pham understood the risks of working so close to one of the world's most feared viruses and tried to reassure her family that she would be safe. Pham's infection raised new questions about whether American hospitals and their staffs are adequately prepared to contain Ebola. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged Tuesday that Pham might not have been infected if a special response team had been sent to Dallas immediately after the Liberian patient was diagnosed.

The records make numerous mentions of protective gear worn by hospital staff, and Pham herself notes wearing the gear in visits to Duncan's room. But there is no indication in the records of her first encounter with Duncan, on Sept. 29, that Pham donned any protective gear. "I've been hearing loud and clear from health care workers from around the country that they're worried," said Frieden, who also said the CDC is considering whether Ebola patients should be transferred to one of four hospitals with specialized bio-containment units.

Though the CDC said a breach in protocol was probably to blame for Pham's infection, the man's illness was so complicated and rare that the risk of transmission would have existed at any hospital, experts said. "Even in the best of hospitals following all the protocol, we can minimize the risk to hospital personnel, but we can never eliminate it," said Dr. David Weber, an epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina's hospital. "They were notified in advance, 24, 48 hours — they had plenty of time to prepare, they were met at the door by people all garbed," Weber said. "That's a more controlled situation than a patient walking through the door that you think may or may not have Ebola." .....snip~

Here is where one of those "wild and crazy theories" is coming from:
Purdue News - Purdue expert showed Ebola can enter cells that line the trachea and lungs; says airborne transmission is not an impossibility

The idea of the Ebola virus becoming airborne is not far-fetched and its ability to enter cells that line the trachea and lungs has been shown under controlled laboratory conditions, a Purdue University virus expert says.

David Sanders, an associate professor of biological sciences who has studied the Zaire strain of Ebola virus that is responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa, says the possibility of the virus becoming airborne should not be discounted.

"It is not unprecedented for a virus to change its mode of transmission," he says. "Ebola does share some of the characteristics of airborne viruses like influenza, and we should not disregard the possibility of it evolving into something that could be transmitted in this way."

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins is a a total freakin moron. Why does Dallas continue to embarrass itself by allowing this idiot to open his mouth. His stupidity reflects badly on Dallas county.

Mornin 99. :2wave: That's because they, are two of the four hospitals in the nation.....that have been training for years on how to handle such a crisis.

What's more, staff in Atlanta and another containment unit in Omaha, Nebraska, would have trained and drilled for years for the possibility of such an occurrence, and they had advance warning of an Ebola case heading their way.

The isolation unit at the Nebraska Medical Center has been working since it opened in 2005 to perfect routines to protect medical staff against infection, said Shelly Schwedhelm, nursing and training director of the unit.

The most important difference in the Nebraska unit and some hospitals, she said, are protocols for putting on protective equipment and safely taking it off.....snip~

That sort of reminds me of when people wanted to take up donations to buy flak jackets for U.S. military personnel in Iraq; and when they wanted to help the military with up-armoring their Humvees.

I am glad he stepped up.....even BO told the World they aren't doing enough.

No, it's clearly the fault of allowing free and unfettered travel in from Ebola ravaged Nations in West Africa into the heartland of America.

Ebola's been around since the mid 70s and we've always managed to keep it isolated.

Not now. Not in Obama's America where Ebola in a Texas town is the new norm.

The previous two Hospitals you mentioned KNEW Ebola patients were on the way.

No one in that Hospital had any idea a deadly and exotic West African Virus would walk right into their Emergency room.

Its NOT their fault.

Besides, they STILL can't pinpoint exactly where and when the Nurse in Dallas breached CDC protocols.

Blaming it on the Hospital....

What the hell is wrong with some people ?

The last two EBOLA Patients flew in and were brought into the other Hospitals in FULL HAZMAT suites

Did Duncan walk into that Hospital in a Full HAZMAT suit ?

And now I am hearing that the 2nd case of Ebola flew to Cleveland and developed a fever on return to Dallas. Of course, that is assuming the patient isn't trying to spare her Cleveland contacts from quarantine.

Big talk, but the #1 method of containment is quarantine and suspending flights out of the region. There is no reason why we should be allowing flights from the affected regions other than to protect from PC criticism that quarantine is somehow racist.

Someone said we had 2 airlines that fly to Africa.....United and Delta. Plus didn't they start screening at certain Airports. So that they can't go and fly to Europe and try to come in some other way.
