SECOND Dallas Hospital Worker Tests Positive for Ebola

Greetings, MMC. :2wave:

That is all they're showing on the three major channels here! Understandable, I guess, since everyone doesn't turn their TVs on at the same time, and it is of local concern. Our mayor, senators, governor and house reps have all either been interviewed or made statements, and the various DC agencies have al sought to reassure everyone that things are under control. Lots of pictures of people wearing masks at the Cleveland airport, though - both workers and passengers. Ironically, I was just telling Vesper earlier today that I wasn't comfortable taking a plane to go on vacation!

Yeah and an hour ago.....CDC Freiden just stated that there will possibly be more cases coming in days. So there it is.....they know there is more.

Second US Ebola case 'very concerning,' more possible.....

The second infection of a Texas health care worker with the dangerous Ebola virus is "very concerning," officials said Wednesday, warning more US cases were possible in the coming days. The second woman should not have boarded a domestic flight in the days before she was diagnosed, though there was an "extremely low likelihood" that she could have infected fellow travelers, said Thomas Frieden, the head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"She was in a group of individuals known to have exposure to Ebola. She should not have traveled on a commercial airline," Frieden told reporters. CDC guidelines outline the need for "controlled movement," and that does not include taking any kind of public transportation, he said. The CDC is seeking to interview 132 people who took the same Frontier Airlines flight as the woman on October 13 from Ohio to Texas. Frieden described the latest case as "very concerning" and said officials were preparing for more.....snip~

Did you forget BO peep also telling people it was covered in Texas? That the US was prepared and we could handle it. That he didn't think it would break out here. What Happened? Even worse....why was BO telling the rest of the planet about it?

Also both sides of the aisle have had people out saying the US could handle it. So save all the BS about Perry.

Oooh am I pickin' on your buddy Perry toooo much? LOL

Apparently, there are now reports that she contacted CDC with concerns about her fever, but it fell below the threshold for high risk.

Right now, there remains no reason for panic. But work remains to be done to ensure that the risk of such a situation is minimized and the need for such work likely extends to the CDC, if this news report is accurate.

Maybe it's just me, but doesn't anyone else find it odd that we were initially told that only direct contact with blood or bodily fluids, via an open wound, or intimate contact, would spread the virus, but now they are worried about just being on the same flight as someone who was not yet diagnosed?

She should have known better than to board that plane. If she had been in the military and I was her commanding officer I would push for a court marshal.

More cases potentially because 70 staff had access to Duncan.

These two people would not have Ebola if we didn't issue a visitors visa to an Ebola infected person from West Africa.........also, I wouldn't be picking up the $500,000 in medical bills for him.
I believe a Dallas church gave Duncan the money to bring him here. That church needs to pick up the cost of his care.

The way the federal government is handling this flys in the the face of logic, reason and common sense!

Agreed........and Duncan's family has the audacity to cry 'racism' over his $500,,000 in 'free medical care after flying in in a visitors visa with Ebola.......unbelievable

My impulse has always been not to trust what I'm being told by those in power. This reinforces it. They primarily want to control panic, if I were going to take a guess. This is going to restrict peoples' movements. I have been exposed to many different pathogens over the years, and even I am starting to be wary of venturing too far from home. Whoever the hell thought it was a good idea to let people come her from ebola-infested areas was a freaking fool.

So, she contacted the CDC and they said go ahead and fly, but you're still willing to trusy them ???

Why? They've been horribly incompetent at every turn so far. When is it enough?

Notice I also stated that if the news story is accurate, the CDC also has work to do (beyond what has been a suboptimal PR approach to date). IMO, the best approach is to let the facts come out and drive decision making.

Moreover, the early issues that have arisen highlight that the U.S. has at least a degree of vulnerability to significant health system shocks, whether they arise from epidemics/pandemics or even biological weapons. The early handling of the Ebola situation has demonstrated gaps in preparedness, training, and equipment.

It hasn't? Really? The CDC seems lost and drifting all over the place concerning this Ebola problem. Government incompetence is on display.

Typo. It has demonstrated gaps. I've fixed the error.

I don't "trusy" anyone. LOL Sounds kinky.

Don't believe anyone from Indiana! :lamo

Greetings, Enigma001. :2wave:

Excellent link!

My first thought after reading it was "Wow, there can't be that many people who have the intelligence, curiosity and unlimited patience to actually take the time to explore scientific "what if" scenarios to get answers and find solutions - and more power to them!! They must look forward to going to work, because I'm certain their job must never get boring!

The following article puts things into perspective with respect to Ebola while discussing the risk of panic. From The New York Times:

Experts who study public psychology say the next few weeks will be crucial to containing mounting anxiety. “Officials will have to be very, very careful,” said Paul Slovic, president of Decision Research, a nonprofit that studies public health and perceptions of threat. “Once trust starts to erode, the next time they tell you not to worry — you worry.”

The risk of Ebola infection remains vanishingly small in this country. The virus is not airborne, not able to travel in the way that, say, measles or the SARS virus can. Close contact with a patient is required for transmission. Just one death from Ebola has occurred here, and medical care is light-years from that available in West Africa, where more than 4,400 people have died in the latest outbreak.

The article goes on to note that the flu kills an estimated 30,000 Americans each year. Nevertheless, many choose not to be vaccinated.

Flu vaccination is overrated.

Hmmmm, they sound pretty Americanized to me.

On the bright side I would think most people tune out what Obama says these days anyway.

I mean how many "Let Me Be Clear"s can we take?

Obama is presiding by the seat of his pants, he's doesn't have a clue.

The ebola outbreak is bad.

How do I know?... Obama postpones campaign trip amid Ebola fears « Hot Air

No, that just means the political media is making it out to be far more an issue than it really is.

Do you know just how many Americans died last flu season from the flu with healthcare?
Do you know just how many Africans died of Ebola without healthcare this epidemic?

Hint: One is bigger than the other and it's the opposite of what raging partisans think it is.
