WHO warns Ebola cases could soar to 10,000 a week
14 October 2014

It's an ominous number. There could be up to 10,000 new Ebola cases per week in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone by the end of this year as the outbreak spreads, the World Health Organization warned Tuesday. "It is impossible to look into a glass ball and say, 'we (will) have this many or that many,' but we anticipate the number of cases per week at that time, it's going to be somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 a week," WHO Assistant Director-General Dr. Bruce Aylward told reporters. "You know, it could be higher, it could be lower but its gonna be somewhere in that ballpark."

Compare those December projections to the latest figures. As of Tuesday morning, there were a total of 8,914 Ebola cases and 4,447 deaths reported to the WHO, Aylward said. In other words, things could get worse before they get better. Aylward told reporters that in 90 days, officials have a goal they're aiming for: They want to see the number of cases dropping from week to week. To start to decrease the rate of infection, the WHO says it hopes to isolate 70% of Ebola patients and have 70% of Ebola victim burials performed safely by December 1. Getting responders, facilities and plans in place to meet the goal will be very difficult, Aylward said.

CNN

~40,000 new cases per month. At the current 70% mortality rate, that translates to 28,000 deaths per month. Damn.

Who believes WHO? Maybe they've been correct in the past bit I don't recall the occasion.

To put that in perspective HIV kills 31,000 a week.

I really have a hard time assessing the meaning of those numbers without an idea of the proportion of people effected in the afflicted area.

This is exactly why we need to increase the number of incoming flights from West Africa.......doing anything else would be racist.....

Finally........Ted Cruz came out today in favor of banning flights from West Africa......the GOP candidate that best separates himself from the insanity of Democrat policies will win the nomination and the election......there's a huge group of the voting electorate who are sick and tired of the nonsense.

Well then Ted Cruz and a "huge" group of the voting electorate isn't very good at critical thinking. The only infected person who flew commercially into the United States took an international flight from Brussels. Now, since I'm inclined to believe that Cruz and the other unnamed individuals we're talking about have never seen a map, I'm gonna go ahead and point out that Brussels is the capital of Belgium and that Belgium is not in West Africa. So banning flights from West Africa accomplishes exactly NOTHING unless the rest of the world bans flights and all other travel from West Africa or we ban all international flights.

Ebola, schmeola.

Just get more ruffage.

And if you start feeling ill...Robitussin.

We could just Nuke Africa until it is devoid of all life. Sterilize the surface of everything, right down to viruses. End of Problem.

So, in your opinion letting more West Africans enter the US puts us at less risk for the spread of Ebola into this country.......got it....makes perfect sense. Fortunately, most normal Americans understand the opposite

I think you missed the point so I'll frame it in the form of a question. How would banning flights from West Africa to the United States have prevented Thomas Duncan from entering the country?

It's real simple........you ban people who's flights originated in West Africa........it's that a difficult concept for you to understand. Obviously, we could create exceptions for US citizens returning home......after they undergo rigorous Ebola screenings. This clown Duncan knew he was infected......got a visitor visa by lying so he could obtain US medical treatment.......infected at least one American........and left me with a $500,000 medical bill.......how many times do you want to repeat that story?

Thomas Duncan's flight to the United States originated in Brussels. Who can or cannot board flights on Belgian soil is up to the Belgian government not the United States.

No it didn't........his flight originated in West Africa......trust me, Homeland Security can track this

So what exactly is it that you are asking for? Homeland Security to develop a program to track flight rosters and maintain a dynamic no-fly list fast enough to stop someone from purchasing a ticket and boarding a connecting flight to the United States? Not possible.

Trust me.......I deal with Homeland Security everyday and they already have this technology/capability in place.......the only question is whether anyone wants to exercise the political will to implement it.......our Dear Leader and most of our politicians are too afraid to be called 'racists'.........so they would rather see Americans die.......that's why I applaud Ted Cruz for being bold and taking the high road

Ted Cruz is talking about banning flights from West Africa which is completely ridiculous for the reasons I've already specified.

But you know what he means........or we can follow your advice and turn into Liberia......I'm assuming you don't have children....

No, Ted Cruz should say what Ted Cruz means.

I'm not concerned about 'turning into Liberia.' Don't let your imagination run wild.

So you don't have children........but have no problem putting yourself at further risk of dying early. I have children and would like to prolong our existence on planet Earth as long as I can.......that is a normal human reaction to a threat on their life.

I think it is an overreaction based an irrational fear of an extremely unlikely scenario. The average annual income in West Africa is about $300. Most people there have a hard time earning enough money to feed themselves let alone purchase tickets for an international flight to the United States. The odds of you or anyone you know coming into contact with a contagious Ebola infected person from West Africa is astronomical.

I'm gonna e-mail your response to the the young nurse in Dallas who is suffering from Ebola because we gave a visitor visa to an Ebola infected Liberian.......I'm sure she will agree......

I find it irrational thinking on the part of the government that we send "boots on the ground" to help combat Ebola. They are targets of a disease they are now saying it is an airborne transmitted disease. My concern is they will be bringing infected soldiers back.
