Turkey 'agrees to US air base use'
13 October 2014

Turkey has agreed to let the US use its military bases for operations in Iraq and Syria, US National Security Adviser Susan Rice says. Ms Rice said the US welcomed the new agreement, which included the training of moderate Syrian rebels. The US is leading air strikes against Islamic State militants, who have seized large parts of Iraq and Syria. Turkey shares a border with both countries, but has so far ruled out any ground operation of its own. Speaking to US broadcaster NBC, Ms Rice said Turkey had also agreed to let the US use Turkish bases and territory "to train moderate Syrian opposition forces". "That's the new commitment, and one that we very much welcome," she added.

Turkey, which has been stung by protests internally and criticism from around the globe for its refusal to assist anti-ISIS coalition forces and Kurdish fighters in the border town of Kobane, has now agreed to allow coalition forces the use of Turkish military bases within 100 miles of the Syria/Iraq borders and the huge air base at Incirlik off the Mediterranean coast. Turkey has also agreed to train 4,000 moderate fighters a year that have been vetted by Turkish intelligence.

That is important, but not enough. Turkey has tanks directly next to the battlefield and is letting the ISIS rub up the mostly civilian Kurds. That is not acceptable.

The Kobane calculus could change quickly and dramatically with US Apache runs from Turkish bases relatively close to the border. However...

What bothers me about Obama's boots-on-the-ground prohibition is how it would effect likely necessities like SAR operations.

If a coalition jet fighter or copter goes down, how do they propose to rescue the crew without boots on the ground?

Maybe he will make an exception. Maybe he will say a prayer.

Well perhaps the Kurds could play the boots on the ground and save the potential downed chopper? Then, Turks are also nearby?

Dumb move by the Turks, now their citizens will be facing terror reprisals.

Am I the only one who questions one strange thing here: why training rebels, but not helping the official government and training their army? To prepare the rebels to get back to overthrowing the government after dealing with IS?

Turkey has been known to make these deals and then brake them after they are paid off. The one that comes to mind is the use of Turkey as a jump off point into Iraq in 2003. We built them roads and infrastructure to accept our large troop deployment (freighter access and roads from the ocean to Iraq). They were never used by the US.

I personally regard promises made by Turkey as roughly equivalent to promises made by Russia.

Show me.

Show you what? I agree, Turkey cannot be taken at their word.

It appears Turkey is now saying otherwise. They say their help depends on if their demands for a No Fly Zone inside Syria are met.

Turkey: No new deal with US on using air base.....

NATO allies Turkey and the United States differed Monday on where they stand on the use of a key air base, with Turkish officials denying reports from the United States that there was a new agreement on its use for operations against Islamic State militants. The impasse suggests that major differences remain between the two sides. Turkey has said it won't join the fight against the extremists unless the U.S.-led coalition also goes after the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad, including establishing a no-fly zone and a buffer zone along the Turkish border. U.S. officials said again Monday that Turkey would let U.S. and coalition forces use its bases, including Incirlik air base, which is within 100 miles of the Syrian border, for operations against the Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.

However, emerging Monday from a Cabinet meeting, Turkey's deputy prime minister, Bulent Arinc, said that "apart from the existing cooperation in combatting terrorism, there is no new situation concerning Incirlik air base." The deputy premier added that Turkey had proposed the use of some of its bases to train and equip moderate opposition forces fighting the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, but said the sides had not yet come to any agreement. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, in comments published Sunday, said Incirlik was already being used for reconnaissance purposes in Iraq and said its use for wider operations would depend on whether Turkey's demands for a no-fly zone and a safe zone in Syria are met.....snip~

Without the ground participation by Turkey or another credible and major Sunni nation, the ISIS conflict is likely a lost cause. The world needs Turkey. The problem Turkey has is they have their own conflict with the Turkish Kurds.

This entire situation would be very different if we allowed the creation of a Kurdish state from Iraq.

The world needs Turkey? No it doesn't. Not to defeat ISIS. It can be done without them.

Far be it for me to argue with Suzi Rice, but the Turks said she's full-o-s**t before she even left the MTP studio Sunday.

Not only did Turkey deny the agreement was in place, they went on to bomb the Kurds in Syria as an exclamation point. :doh

What about the Kurds in Syria?

I assume they would get support through the Kurdish nation. No one else is helping them. Our arms that we are sending to support them have to go through Baghdad for inspections and then reported to Iran. If the Kurd's had a independent nation we could funnel the weapons they need. I am thinking anti tank weapons specifically. Right now, from what I understand, those are not getting to them through Baghdad. None of the ME countries want to see a independent Kurdish nation.

Heya JM. :2wave: Yeah I had that up in the Turks and Kurds Thread. Erdogan might as well as forget about the NO fly zone inside Syria.

I have no doubt whatsoever they would put boots on the ground in that situation. There is a long history of doing so even in the most hostile of situations. You can count on it.

Contingency plans already in place and crews on standby before one aircraft flies over enemy territory.

No way we would leave that up to them. No way no how.

They have to do something. They could be next in line at some point
