Texas Health Care Worker Tests Positive for Ebola

Apparently you missed this:

And you'll forgive me if I am skeptical of the word of a dumbass nurse who boarded a plane after being exposed to a critically ill Ebola patient. I don't understand why liberal drones have made this a partisan issue.

And how many vials of blood do you think the left on the plane? You realize even if the did shed blood somewhere that blood tends to clot and dry in a few hours at very most. Thats not fluid. How much vomit and feces was on the plane and remained in a liquid state after several hours with no one noticing? The woman was asymptomatic.

You remind me of the people who used to freak about about AIDS patients and wanted to isolate them on a floor when it was quite clear the transmission was primarily blood borne. Hysterical is about the best descriptor, fed by a media that knows it can get eyeballs by whipping the gullible into a frenzy.

In her defense, she DID call the CDC and the CDC told her it was okay.

After ensuring she was ASYMPTOMATIC.

Lets also note that the first guy (a health care worker) who came to the US who was ACTUALLY SYMPTOMATIC with Ebola flew from Africa to the US and infected NO ONE on that plane.

This isnt easy to get, people.

You really don't get it. Do you think the CDC is talking about vials of liquid blood? They are talking about Ebola surviving in blood left at room temperature for several days. Do you think they don't realize the blood would have long dried up by then?

I am not panicky in the least, and your exaggerations don't make it so. But I do hope you libs keep it up.

Well then they're idiots too. Common sense should have told her, there was no need to call the CDC.

I agree - common sense would say not to travel especially since she knew she was around Ebola patients as did the CDC. I understand why she called and verified because it was a slight temperature but with this particular virus extreme caution should be taken. I'm hoping the message gets out to our healthcare workers that if they are part of a team or individually handling or caring for an Ebola patient that extreme care must be taken. Even a slight temperature should not be taken for granted.

Apparently, the word 'fluid' escapes you.

Virus generally needs to be in moist conditions to survive.

A 99.5 degree temperature in my opinion is not asymptomatic... 98.7 degrees is asymptomatic.

That demonstrates why your opinion is not medical advice.

Normal temperature is and includes 99.5- as elegantly shown in a nice NEJM paper from about 1991 or so. 98.6 was a virtually arbitrary number designated as 'normal' early in the 20th century with little population data.

Got a link? Forgive me if I don't take your word for it...

I could look it up, but that's a fools errand.

It's established in medicine. 99.5 is normal.

Then consider your OPINION rejected. Have a nice day!

Took 5 seconds: Body Temperature

What is normal body temperature?

Most people think of a "normal" body temperature as an oral temperature of 98.6 °F (37 °C). This is an average of normal body temperatures. Your temperature may actually be 1°F (0.6°C) or more above or below 98.6 °F (37 °C). Also, your normal body temperature changes by as much as 1°F (0.6°C) throughout the day, depending on how active you are and the time of day. Body temperature is very sensitive to hormone levels and may be higher or lower when a woman is ovulating or having her menstrual period.

A rectal or ear (tympanic membrane) temperature reading is slightly higher than an oral temperature reading. A temperature taken in the armpit is slightly lower than an oral temperature reading. The most accurate way to measure body temperature is to take a rectal temperature.
What is a fever?

In most adults, an oral temperature above 100.4 °F (38 °C) or a rectal or ear temperature above 101 °F (38.3 °C) is considered a fever.

Took 5 seconds:

So what is normal for this nurse then? Is it 98.2 or is it 99.5 or somewhere in between.

Notice it says "in MOST adults". I prefer JAMA personally...

They assured that she was asymptomatic over the phone ?

Wow, with that kind of technology its a wonder the CDC hasn't " stopped Ebola in its tracks " already.

Your link was better -

Our data corroborated Wunderlich's in that mean temperature varied diurnally, with a 6 AM nadir, a 4 to 6 PM zenith, and a mean amplitude of variability of 0.5°C (0.9°F); women had slightly higher normal temperatures than men; and there was a trend toward higher temperatures among black than among white subjects.

Conclusions. —Thirty-seven degrees centigrade (98.6°F) should be abandoned as a concept relevant to clinical thermometry; 37.2°C (98.9°F) in the early morning and 37.7°C (99.9°F) overall should be regarded as the upper limit of the normal oral temperature range in healthy adults aged 40 years or younger

And I suppose what's "normal" for that nurse would require a weeks (?) long tracking of her temperature under various conditions, menstrual cycle, etc.

As well as time of day and environmental factors. All this leads to: The CDC should have erred on the side of caution and told the nurse not to fly.

LOL, You were the one who had an unfounded opinion. I backed mine up with a source - journal and year. Sorry if you are used to getting spoonfed and are too freakin lazy to look it up.

Edit: Just noticed you actually did look it up. And apparently read it wrong. Your source shows 99.5 as normal.

Actually you didn't. What you did was whimp out and not enter a link that is easily found.

Sorry if you are used to getting spoonfed and are too freakin lazy to look it up.
It shows your not very sure or very lazy yourself. I had the JAMA link before I ask you for a link. :2razz:

What my source says is it depends... what it DOESN'T say is that normal is 99.5. Try reading it again.

Love the fact that Obama just appointed a Political hack with ZERO medical expertise to be the " Ebola Czar ".

Shows us where his priorities lie.

Not in the health and well-being of Americans, but in how this affects him and Democrats Politically.

First GOP fearmongers are against all czars in 2009.

Then they were for a czar while back-stabbing President Ebola.

Now thery're back to bitching about the czar who was appoionted cuz of politics.

Meanwhile we don't have a Surgeon General cuz the GOP lives in frear of the NRA.

There is no level the GOP won't lower itself to play p0olitics with Health and Death.

It's no surprise to me that TEXAS dropped the initial ball not following CDC protocol--
clearly incompetent or on purpose or both .

The incompetent and impotent Texas hospital, or was it on purpose, says even more.
Very conservatives only use Unions, in a dishonest way, to blatantly lie about an issue, fear-mongering on Health and Death .

The Nurses Union is saying otherwise.

Oh we should be thankful that Obama appointed a Political hack that has zero experience in doing ANYTHING relevant to this crisis ?

Sorry, I'm not a Obama sycophant and I can see just how stupid and irresponsible this appointment is.

And stop crying about the lack of a Surgeon General. Given Obama's long list of failed appointments the GOP is doing you a and everyone else a huge favor.
