Airport workers at La Guardia in NYC are going on strike over having to be around potential Ebola-carrying air passengers. This echoes the popular sentiment of a majority of Americans who want Obama to stop favoring his fellow Africans, and to start favoring the Americans who pay his salary.
Ebola scare: LaGuardia on strike, 58% of Americans want to ban flights from W. Africa ? RT USA

Ignorance run a muck. Let's start with the fact that LaGuardia is a domestic airport. They aren't likely to deal with anything more contagious than a tick on a plant in the baggage of a flight from Colorado carrying Lyme disease.

Banning flights from Africa is also complete silliness. We inbound 150 persons per day from Africa

...many of them, including Mr. Duncan, do not enter the country on flights from Africa but connect in Europe.

People are starting to lose rationality. They are far more likely to be gunned down by a gunman in a movie theater or mall or die in a carjacking than die of ebola.

So, what is the cost of truth?

Q: What defines a "progressive"?
A: A complete lack of foresight.

I bet you thought AIDS was just a big scare tactic of the right too? Well close to 1,000,000 Americans have now died from AIDS. Hundreds of thousands have been infected and sickened by West Nile Virus. Africa also leads the world in whooping cough, tuberculosis, and malaria. We just happen to have had recent outbreaks of TB and whooping cough in the US, when those illnesses had previously been eradicated many years ago. So tell me, where's the actual "progress" that progressives bring? I don't see any, all I see is regression, so maybe you guys should call yourselves regressives.

I can easily understand the workers at the airport. Keeping in mind the fact that Ebola incubation period is 21 day, that you might not know if someone is sick, plus the amount of flight from different part of the world... A single person could be enough for disaster to start.

Do you really think that taking their temperature is going to stop the spread of this? I don't...Plus, why not take precautions? What do you have against doing everything possible to avoid bringing it here?

Wait, the existence of disease is to be blamed on progressives?

Kind of funny considering that, with the exception of Canada and possibly Mexico, LGA only services domestic flights.

So you're saying a flight from west Africa couldn't connect elsewhere and fly to LGA?

So you're saying a flight from west Africa couldn't connect elsewhere and fly to LGA?

Not directly. LGA's runways are too short and aren't designed for the weight of your typical long range jet. Anything coming from overseas is probably landing at somewhere else in the US and pax more than likely being put on a different aircraft. With JFK and EWR both nearby I'm gonna guess that even that doesn't happen all that often.

Could people travelling internationally make their way through LGA? Sure. But there aren't gonna be many.

The protest strikes me as being more alarmist than thoughtful.

That would be the logical thing to do, however political correctness trumps logic everyday in progressiveland.

Forget Laguardia, it makes sense for Every USA/EU airport.

What's the downside?
There is virtually ZERO significant loss of Tourism or other Economic/Business interest.
The need for the nationals of those tiny/crap-hole countries (Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea) to get here is ZERO compared to the risk.

Only Aid workers should be able to transit on chartered flights with Special precautions.

Ok, so now we have to ground every single foreign flight from anywhere in the world.

Yes ground every flight. Better safe than sorry.
The cdc doesn't even know if it's airborne or not.
Let's leave politics out of this.

Landing doesn't decontaminate a plane. Not sure what the answer is.

Travel ban =/= grounding every foreign flight. You start with direct flights. Passengers travel location are tracked via passport. Anyone who's traveled to any of these affected countries would be denied entry for a minimum of 30 days. This would take a concerted effort but its certainly doable and should have been done months ago. The further we allow this to progress, the more inherently difficult in becomes to implement.

What about we ban flights from places in the US with high rates of unvaccinated kids? That might actually make more sense...

I wish the general public would remember that Ebola isn't infectious until the patient starts showing symptoms. So if that person getting off the plane has been exposed, but is showing no symptoms, they aren't a threat.

oh - also - How about you can't board a plane unless you have proof you got a flu shot? and a TDAP booster?

OK... I will play this childish game....

Start childish game:

What defines a Conservative? One who shuns science and scholarly works preferring to operate solely from their impressions of things; often internally tortured by fear of the unknown.

End childish game:

Why don't you tell us what science supports your fears to counter the science / academics works that shows you your fears are irrational.

Why Ebola Is Not A Threat To The U.S. : NPR
Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever | CDC
Could Ebola Virus Become A Threat In The U.S.? - Forbes
Surgeon General | SurgeonGeneral.gov

I suppose you would like more "security theatre" like we currently have at airports designed primarily to give people a sense of comfort that they are protected from terrorists on planes. It does provide comfort; how much protection it actually provides is suspect, but people feel good. Since you seem to think on an emotional level, perhaps cancelling direct flights from West Africa would make you feel good. Just know it won't do much to really protect us (see previous post).

I think you need to reconcile your fears with the science, but do to so, of course, you will need to actually pay the cost of the truth. Perhaps you can start with a search the Internets (all of them) to find some credible support for your position. It might help you feel better once you discover how weak that support is (most of it appealing only to the emotion of fear). Hey, if you find something really credible, maybe you can help the rest of us be more fearful as well.

BTW. If you are so concerned that the US is unprepared for ebola, perhaps you should call your Senator and ask him why he is withholding the confirmation of a Surgeon General.

BTW2. To your original concern about Obama protecting is "fellow Africans" .... I hope you realize that Obama is no more NOR any less an American than you. You really should get over that fear as well.

We could try not losing our minds over a disease that kills fewer people than the flu.

Descendents of Africans have suspicious loyalties, but descendents of Europeans are Real Americans(tm).

that seems to be their proposition. And yet we all descended from Africans...

People are understandably scared. Look what's it's doing in Africa. Imagine that happening in the US.

Obama, the CDC Director and the "It's fine" people on this thread just don't get it.

Setting up "screenings" at airports? Really?
Take their temperature....POINTLESS! Duncan was not symptomatic until a couple of days after his plane ride.
Questionaries? Easy to lie. Duncan did it on his before he left home.

I don't give a flying pile of cow flop how "safe we are" according to the CDC Director. We need to ban all flights from Ebola-hit countries and ban all Africans from Ebola-hit countries who come via other countries. If medical personnel from there want to come home, that's fine. But before they do, they'll have to spend a month in isolation to make sure they're virus clean.

Both Republicans AND Democrats are calling for flight bans. If both of them are in agreement on something, it must be serious...and Obama better consider heeding their calls.

We got lucky as hell in Dallas. We dodged a bullet. We might not be so lucky next time. Better to be safe then sorry.

Are you also going to ban people from flying if they don't have proof of flu shots? measles vaccinations? TDAP boosters? Those are more likely to kill you than ebola.

A month in isolation when the incubation period is 21 days? really? that's useless.

I agree screenings at airports are pretty useless. Education; giving passengers who come in a list of what to look for, telling them to go for care if they get a fever, and educating the medical establishment is more important.

Or we just stop all planes, because there are a hell of a lot of infectious people flying, with stuff more deadly than Ebola.

People are understandably scared. Look what's it's doing in Africa. Imagine that happening in the US.

...until you think (which too many are not) about the differences between the healthcare infrastructure of Western Africa vis a vis that of the US. People are losing rationality about this...
