Police: Off-duty St. Louis officer shoots, kills man who fired at him

Oh. My. God. She knows this how exactly?

What's comical is how I also saw that on the MSNBC home page. They are actually reporting on his dear mama's assertion that he was holding a sandwich, not a gun. Amazing.

It's quite simple, Tres. The kid is black and he was shot by a cop. This day in age there need be no other evidence presented to determine that the cop is guilty of racially motivated assault.

If I were charge in that part of the country I'd simply instruct the cops to totally avoid engagement with any black person. Don't look their way, don't say hello, don't do anything at all. If a black kid is raping his grandmother in the middle of the street you just ignore it because he's black and ANYTHING that the cops do is going to cause a problem.

So he shot at the cop with a Ruger sandwich?
I am guessing the sound the cop thought was gunfire, was only the slapping of the bologna
on the cheese.
Seriously it should be easy for them to verify if the suspect had fired the gun.

According to the reports I've read, the assailant got off 3 rounds before his gun jammed. This underscores the importance of using quality ammo, tested by you personally under controlled conditions at a range to get an idea of its reliability in your particular firearm, and keeping the weapon clean via regular disassembly, swabbing, and using good quality cleaner such as Hoppes or Frog Lube according to the manufacturer's directions. It also shows the utility of practicing clearing jams, and to carry a rod of sufficient length and strength for clearing the occasional hot round. A six inch wood dowel in a diameter small enough to fit down the barrel works well, but a screwdriver of the proper dimensions for the gun would work as well.

Of course, it really shows that one shouldn't randomly fire at police officers. The officer needing seventeen rounds in a dynamic situation at night while under fire isn't surprising at all. People have an absurd Hollywood driven notion of the accuracy and stopping power of handguns. Sure, you can put 9/10 inside the nines at 15 yards in a well lit firing range after assuming the optimal shooting stance. It's a bit different under low-light, or worse yet variable light, conditions against a moving target shooting back.

especially when they are running, using cover, and trying NOT to get shot

tv makes it all look so damn easy

and remember...this guy was fired upon first.....probably scared ****less

missing a few shots doesnt surprise me at all

Damn mustard stove piped, I guess. The gun has been identified, so I'm certain they checked it and tested the man's hands for residue. It's a simple matter quickly done.

I have to wonder how long before people start claiming it was inappropriate to keep firing while the assailant was trying to clear the jam. I bet he kept racking the slide and pulling the trigger to see if it cleared which, for a hot round, will only move ammo from the magazine to the ground one at time under the best circumstances. More likely, it will keep the slide from closing all the way. I would bet there were at least two live rounds on the ground around the assailant, and I would even hazard that they are steel casing.

Missou working hard to get in that worst 10 states for quality of life. And how did Illinois and Michigan fail to make bottom ten ?

If you read some of the stuff the moonbats are saying about this it would blow your mind. The general consensus at DailyKos, for example, is that the cop stalked the kids, attacked them and then put his "drop gun" in the kids hand and pulled the trigger a couple of times to make it all look convincing. So far I haven't seen anyone speculate that the cop then stole and ate the kids sandwich to get rid of the evidence but I figure that's coming next.

Right. And all of this occurred with no one seeing a damn thing. Somehow his mom knew her son was carrying a sandwich, though. These people are amazing.

"Amazing" isn't the word I was thinking of.

After a chase on foot, one of the teens approached the officer "in an aggressive manner," Dotson said, and refused to stop or surrender.

The two got into a "physical alteration" that pulled off the suspect's gray-hooded sweater. As the teenager ran away, grabbing at his waist, Dotson said, the officer felt that the teenager was carry a firearm.

Dotson said, however, that the unidentified officer, a six-year veteran of the St. Louis police force, did not open fire because "he wanted to be certain it was a gun."

At one point, he said, the suspect turned and "pointed the gun at the officer and fired at least three rounds at the officer." He said the suspect tried to continue firing, but his gun jammed.

The officer responded by firing at least 17 rounds at the suspect, killing him. The officer was not injured.

Dotson said a 9mm Ruger handgun, allegedly belonging to the suspect, was recovered at the scene and a forensics search located three projectiles that had been fired at the officer.

"An investigation will decide if the officer's behavior was appropriate," the police chief told reporters.

Dotson did not identify the victim but said he "was no stranger to law enforcement."

Protests erupt in St. Louis after cop kills black teen

His name was Vonderrit D. Myers, and your post is BS because his mother said he was holding a sandwich. MSNBC has it on their home page. It was just a sandwich.

When did sandwiches come with rounds anyway?

Wut?

Well, he only fired once. So, in their mind. Nothing.

The cop was supposed wait until he actually hit--maybe even twice--before returning fire.

kinda sad that even in sarcasm so much truth in this thread

i dont like the fact that black kids are getting shot

But i dislike officers getting shot at even more.....

Hope this gets closed quickly so the guy can get on with the healing process

I see nothing that the cop did wrong here. Evidence show that "The Kid" fired his weapon. IMO, if you have a gun on you then all bets are off. The cop has the right to protect his life. As far as riots are concern, there shouldn't be any. If it is then it is by a hand full people who don't care about the truth. Kind of like Birthiers.

Now trying to link this story to the Brown case is total BS. There are too many holes in that case that bothers me. This one appears to be straight forward. Lets just move on please.

I agree

This should not turn into 300 page thread.

More details should come out shortly. Getting shot because you fired at a cop is not something that upsets me. The 17 shots fired back is somewhat concerning but we don't know what happened yet.

Cops are not trained to shoot to disable. They shoot to kill after being shot at. If this kid(I consider him a kid whether or not he was 18. All 18 year olds are kids to me) shot first, he gets what he got.

Now if the cop saw he was disabled and then shot him again, that is a problem.

The 'he was turning his life around, and was a good boy' speech will surely be coming shortly.

Is there any evidence that the man fired a shot at the officer other than what the police say?

Yes. Just a matter of a little more time, and he'd have made it to that goal of taking care of the infirm and the elderly. But it was snatched from him when that ham and rye went off.

Posters, whatever you do, DON'T order a loaded baked potato.

The notion that the mom claims the guy had a sandwich is lol-worthy though.

"He was running from his friends with a sandwich in his hand. He didn't drop it because it was his favorite and running from the cops works up an appetite."

And thrice, no less.

Maybe is was a Wendy's triple.
