Seattle Changes Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day

If they had changed it to "A Jar Full of Peanuts Day" it would have been an improvement over "Columbus Day." Columbus was an amoral ****ing psychopath who (I genuinely hope) doesn't represent our present values.

You'll be surprised...

Why this man who commented on the ease it would be to enslave a whole people is celebrated by the greatest country humanity has ever seen is beyond me.

I like the idea in this change. We all know now that he didn't discover America. Besides, there should be more of a recognition of that which he did find than for he himself. I hope it goes nationwide.

Tell what exactly?

Why one group of people also having rocky history means we should celebrate the Hitler of the 1400's who was such a moron that he declared the "new world has been discovered!" despite there already being millions of humans in the Americas...

and neither do many past leaders we honor.

Using present day "values" is a poor way to evaluate a persons accomplishments. One should look at historical contexts.

Even in the context of his own day, Columbus was a bastard.

Apparently they did *shrug*

Nope. They can add to it. But they can't change it. They can claim they changed it all that they want also. But I'll bet you that come Columbus Day banks will close because its Columbus Day...not "Indigenous Day".

Christopher Columbus, the man credited with discovering the Americas, was a greedy and vindictive tyrant who saved some of his most violent punishments for his own followers, according to a document uncovered by Spanish historians. As governor and viceroy of the Indies, Columbus imposed iron discipline on the first Spanish colony in the Americas, in what is now the Caribbean country of Dominican Republic. Punishments included cutting off people's ears and noses, parading women naked through the streets and selling them into slavery.
"Columbus' government was characterised by a form of tyranny," Consuelo Varela, a Spanish historian who has seen the document, told journalists.

But even as a tyrant he was ultimately a failure:
"The monarchs wanted someone who did not give them problems. Columbus did not solve problems, he created them."

GODWIN FTW! Hitler of the 1400's :lamo

True, actually. While values do change through the ages, his rule as governor was regarded with revulsion.

Oh, stop it. The guy was literally responsible for the enslavement and deaths of millions of people.

Changed it. I like seeing you mad. Just accept it, Indigenous day, I think that's hilarious because it sounds like Seattle is spitting on Columbus' grave.

Next time just say he was the Pol Pot or Idi Amin of the 1400's... no Godwin counter argument crap. ;)

Good. Columbus was a murderous, scumbag. Nothing like committing genocide, enslaving people, and looting what they own. No reason why we should celebrate this scum.

Millions of people die? psssh nah he ain't a a predecessor of Hitler...

Why does anyone care? Does anyone on this forum that has commented in this thread actually celebrate Columbus Day? Other than being a bank holiday most people don't get the day off and only notice it because the banks are closed. What difference does it make that Seattle made it a Native American holiday instead? I think some people just look for something to bitch about it.

Europeans and native peoples were on "opposite" sides when the historical colonization of the Americas took place, were they not?

Not necessarily no.

Many natives reached out to the Europeans (more so in NA rather than SA) only to be backstabbed. Whatever.

Columbus Day is a legal holiday. The states, as well as the cities, can determine whether or not they want to acknowledge Columbus Day on the second Monday of October, or Indigenous People's Day, Flying Saucer Day, Starbucks Coffee Day or Satanic Demon Day if they like.

There are plenty of states in the Union that do not acknowledge Columbus Day. Why this Indigenous People's Day is such a surprise is beyond me.

Screw Columbus. He was an asshole that deserves no recognition. He sailed a boat and landed in a new land. Big ****ing deal. The natives would have prospered and continued their progression into modern times just nicely without Whitey...

"...while honoring a people and ignoring all the bad things they did."

Historically speaking, the Caribs were not exactly what you'd call "nice" people. Frankly, neither were the tribes or civilizations found on the mainland.

The tribal societies were roughly about on par with ancient European peoples like the Celts or Germanic tribes. The Aztecs were... Well, the Aztecs.

De las Casas records that when he first came to Hispaniola in 1508, "there were 60,000 people living on this island, including the Indians; so that from 1494 to 1508, over three million people had perished from war, slavery, and the mines. Who in future generations will believe this? I myself writing it as a knowledgeable eyewitness can hardly believe it...."[79]

And I'm sure the natives also ate too much candy before bedtime, which is utterly irrelevant to the Europeans' behavior when they came to the Americas.

South Dakota changed Columbus Day to Native American Day 20 years ago.

I'm sure no one really cares about that...
