CDC responds to sick paasenger on plane from Liberia

People deserve facts and truth. Denying them this right on the grounds you don't want to cause panic is the nanny state way.

Not to mention you set up the liar, liar condition where the public doesn't trust what the government says even when it is the whole truth.

Isn't it always better to err on the side of safety and keep them isolated for the publics safety when it could be something like Ebola?

Which is what they DID NOT DO.

Martial law comes to mind. Why else has the government recently been arming local police departments with military-type equipment? They've even stated its for riot control. What riots were they expecting?

Surplus military equipment after a war. I don't like the idea of podunk police departments getting all that equipment but there is no conspiracy.

If those lawmakers think they would be immune from Ebola, I'd like to know their secret! However, this might be one time when they find they cannot exempt themselves from what everyone else might have to live with.

One other thing that bothers me is that people are still dieing in South Africa, but the people that come here for treatment get better. If there is a drug available for treatment, why aren't we sending it to help the people who live in other countries? That would stop the trend that seems inevitable at this point.

South Africa? WTF? That's like confusing Massachusetts with California. Sorry honey but South Africa is a long ways from the afflicted countries.

There is no drug available beyond experimental. The difference between here and Africa is the level of care.

At this moment, we have to fear a mass panic more than we have to fear Ebola. One seems to be more contagious than the other.

Nothing to fear but fear itself. (and Ebola)

Just as frightening, the CDC forecast that as many as 1.4 million people could be infected by the deadly virus by year-end if the outbreak doesn't come under control.

That's 1.4 million. With a near-50% death rate, Ebola is more deadly than even the Black Plague. That could mean 700,000 people dead, if it's not controlled.

Given the clear danger to the U.S., why hasn't the White House imposed travel limits on those flying in from Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and other nations in West Africa where the disease has broken out?

That would seem a minimal response to containing this deadly hemorrhagic fever that causes many victims to suffer a horrible, lingering death.

Both France and Britain immediately halted flights from the afflicted countries in West Africa. Why not us?

The World Health Organization reports that the death toll now tops 3,400 out of just under 7,500 cases, nearly all in West Africa.

Ebola outbreak response from Obama under fire by critics - CBS News

7,500 infected with about a 45% mortality rate. That's not a contagion to fear?

And just think, bringing Ebola to the US could have probably been prevented.

How?

Any quarantine or removal of people from airline manifests has to take place in other countries. Not our own. How much influence do we have to see that done...and done properly? Those are countries heavily run by corrupt bureaucracies, nepotism, and bribery....at every level, every facility.

Once arrived here....the entire plane would need to be quarantined. The civil rights outrage of Americans on board would be significant.

Would our govt be wrong to do so? IMO no...but there really is no way Obama can do this 'right' in many people's eyes. If he did indeed impose such quarantines, the public outrage would also be off the scale...and that would just be the beginning, in terms of quarantine infringements on people's rights.

I could swear that patient critical had vomited on a street or something, and they just washed it down the storm drain with water...Anyone know if thats true? If it is, doesn't sound too damned smart to me.

Right now there isn't a drug. What seems to be prudent at this point is not only exit screening which would take place in Sierra Leon or Libera or any other countries (exist screening has been dismissed as non-existent by some critics) but also entry screening in the US when these passengers land in the US. I don't think that goes far enough - I believe the US needs to adopt a temporary policy of either banning passengers from these countries all together from entry into the US, or, a mandatory quarantine / isolation for those passengers from Ebola countries until such time US can determine they are not infected with Ebola.

I do agree with the CDC in one aspect - that the spread ultimately needs to be addressed in West Africa. Right away.

After stocking up...they would stay home...and stop spending their money. The economic consequences would be severe.

IN Liberia, no one shakes hands, everyone is requiring a chlorine hand wash and you can't enter a public building without getting your temp checked. (Plus they're going house to house lokking for the sick) Something short of martial law.

What is your point? I dont feel like I have the full context. Your answer is in response to this that you quoted:

Was it just informative? If so, thanks. It is good to know.

Just informative , Ms. suspicious.

This guy, just from a legal standpoint alone, should never have been able to enter the country.

Our entire government is grossly incompetent from top to bottom. The only thing they're good at is putting people in jail for small amounts of weed, and sending people to prison for not paying their income taxes. Our government has become the very same type of bloated and absent tyrannical mess that England was when we declared independence from it. We the people need to declare independence from our crappy elected officials.

I prefer that you just relocate if you don't like it here. :)

The Texas Ebola Patient just died.

I hope this puts things into perspective for the people that think a Flight ban out of West Africa is a bad idea.

I love it here, I just don't like where we're heading. Multiculturalism is the death of the west. The Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution..I don't recall reading about any Liberians or Nigerians who contributed to any of those vital moments in American history.

How about all the various nationalities that did contribute to those things? This country was built on diversity. Or was that ok because they were all the 'right color?' Blacks and Chinese (in the West) were brought here against their will and STILL have contributed many important things to this nation.

Multiculturalism is diversity....it is what makes us stronger...thru genetic diversity, as well. Any scientist will tell you how important genetic diversity is. The more diversity, the more contributions, the more ability to adapt, the greater the pool of innovation, the greater the chance of surviving disaster.

Yes, those are the only people in our jails :doh

Is this the same govt that has agreed to not enforce federal laws on states that legalize weed? ya, there goes your credibility.

Oh really? Japan is 99% homogeneous, and has the third strongest economy in the world, as well as crime rates that are vastly lower than any other first world nation.
Furthermore, we aren't hearing of any Ebola cases in Japan, yet there have been Ebola cases in the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, and Australia. Scientists are predicting a 75% chance of an Ebola outbreak in France by the end of October, and France is known around the world for its multiculturalism!! I think you're making a lot of Polly Anna assumptions without any cold hard facts.

"More than half of federal prisoners are incarcerated for drug crimes in 2010, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics".

The Drug War And Mass Incarceration By The Numbers

That means more than 50% of federal prisoners are in for drugs. I think you need to read more.

You might be surprised to know many former U.S. black slaves resettled in Liberia, the official language is U.S. English, and their government is modeled after ours. Unfortunately a civil war ravaged their country and they never recovered.

They also descended into cannibalism at one point. And monkey meat remains one of the only sources of protein in Liberia. Sounds like the freed slaves who stayed in America have in pretty good compared to those who went back to their area of origin.

And yet you said 'weed.'

That is very very different...as are the numbers...than 'all drugs'. Esp. at the federal level.

Well...weed IS the most popular recreational drug by far. Plenty of Americans have done time in jail and prison for marijuana use or cultivation.

And I stand by my original statement, which is that the current federal government is a bloated and ineffectual bureaucracy that needs to be replaced :peace
