The Viet Cong and the NVA didn't defeat our armies, either. They still won.
Anyway, the core of al-Qaeda in Iraq was not defeated, my friend. Rather, it was driven underground and across the border into Syria. It, along with other Sunni insurgent groups that we fought, was instrumental in the creation of the Mujahideen Shura Council, which has since morphed into ISIS. And, yeah, we kicked the Taliban out of Afghanistan so they could regroup in Pakistan, unless this is your definition of defeat:
That was today--in Kabul, the capital. They just want us to know they're still there, but they're largely biding their time, waiting for us to withdraw after what will have been fourteen years in the country. You can bet your sweet bippy they'll come knocking on Afghanistan's door in force come Spring.
