Military to allow undocumented immigrants to serve

A small number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. will have an opportunity to join the military for the first time in decades under a new Department of Defense policy unveiled Thursday.

The new rules will expand an existing program allowing recruiters to target foreign nationals with high-demand skills, mostly rare foreign language expertise or specialized health care training.

For the first time, the program — known as Military Accessions in the National Interest, or MAVNI — will be open to immigrants without a proper visa if they came to the U.S. with their parents before age 16. More specifically, they must be approved under a 2012 Obama administration policy known as Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA.

The new Pentagon policy may be the first phase of a broader government-wide effort to ease pressure on immigrants and create new paths to citizenship
So we have no Americans or legal aliens that can do this? Really?

"Those targeted by recruiters under the MAVNI program likely will be immigrants with language skills critical to national security, such as Arabic, Chinese, Pashto or Persian."

"The Pentagon program is capped at 1,500 recruits per year."

"Obama, frustrated with the failure of Congress to pass any substantial immigration reform"

#1 These immigrants have skills Americans don't have apparently.

#2 They won't be flooding the military at any rate.

#3 Congress is being a bitch about immigration reform.

You read this stuff and your eyes want to roll to the back of your head! Almost everyday there is something else in the news pointing out the clueless are running the country at this time. There is no reason to accept illegals into the military except as part of an agenda to reach out to the hopeful future Democrat voting block. This administration slashed the 2014 military budget. Prior to the budget, the drawdown of Army troops had begun ( 10k in 2013 ). After the severe cuts to the budget this year for 2015...............................................

Because of budget pressures, the pace of the ongoing drawdown has been accelerated, so that active component manning is slated to hit 490,000 by the end of fiscal 2015, which is 23,000 fewer soldiers than previously planned.

In budget testimony and documents presented to Congress early this spring, Army leaders indicated the drawdown will continue through the end of 2017, when manning will hit 450,000 to 440,000.

It is no secret that unemployment is high among vets who happen to be U.S. citizens yet these yahoos after reducing the size of our army adding many to the unemployment lines, want to give illegals an opportunity to serve? Someone who didn't even respect this country enough to follow our laws?

The government uses so many independent contractors in support of the military, why can't these people be in that category rather than being members of the Armed Forces?

I just saw another newsflash about the Army laying off 10,000 personnel. So let's bring in illegals.

Taking the path of the PMC ultimately means you still won't be an American citizen even if you fight alongside Americans, that's a terrible deal.

I don't know what a PMC is, so I can't comment specifically about the deal you reference. Job---->Paycheck, could be a pretty good deal.

It's not the first time this has happened. We have had illegals join the military with the intent to become citizens in return for it.

I'm good with this......so long as they are properly vetted. Nobody wants to see turncoats on a massive scale in our actual military, like we've seen with our Afghan partners.

Go play Metal Gear Solid 4. Private Military Contractor.

Democrats want amnesty, that's what the bitch is. Amnesty hasn't worked, it didn't work in the late 60's and not in the 80's.

I agree, while it has been donein the past I don't think it has been done to the scale that the government wants to now which is dangerous IMO.

Not enough, and not enough willing to serve. The main thing is that the MOS that is being recruited for, 09L, requires native speakers. So that rules out training non-native speakers. So we would need a pool of native speakers, willing to serve, and willing to serve in this one MOS.

Or you really need the language skills and targeting people for whom this would be their only option to become citizens helps you a lot more and is cheaper than trying to recruit native speakers.

You'd have a point IF the Americans being kicked out were fluent native speakers of Mandarin, Farsi, Arabic, or Pashto.

The government uses so many independent contractors in support of the military, why can't these people be in that category rather than being members of the Armed Forces?
They do. But an enlisted soldier costs a lot less than the amount you have to pay a contractor. In Afghanistan, our native speaker U.S. citizen contracters were getting paid in the $200,000 range.

Again, I'm willing to bet none of those 10,000 speak Chinese, Farsi, Arabic, or Pasto.

Apparently there will be very few who qualify.

1) They have to qualify for DACA
2) They need to have a critical skill

If they meet those two requirement, the branches have a rule that the potential recruits cannot have illegal family members (parents/siblings, etc)

How many DACAs that came over illegally could meet that requirements?

I couldn't go in the military because of too many traffic tickets in high school. I guess I should have been a Cuban boat person.

That's the other rub, these illegals have already broken the law.

Well, more accurately, it was likely their parents who did. And if they're willing to serve the country as a member of the armed forces, good for them. I can't see anything in this proposal to object to, absent a reflexive desire to condemn "illegals."

First, Cubans are not illegal immigrants. IF they make land, they're allowed to stay and pursue residency.
And oddly, I can't find anything in the Army regs that would prohibit enlistment solely on minor traffic offenses.

illegal entry is a misdemeanor, and the military has no problem with a small number of misdemeanors (I believe 3 or fewer is no issue) and this misdemeanor of illegal entry was as a minor.

Air Force and this was in 1984. Cubans were illegal immigrants until they let them out of the over pass tent cities down here.

It's not unheard of to have non-citizens serving in the military. When I was in the Navy, most of the AKs (Aviation Storekeepers) and MSs (Mess Specialists i.e. cooks) were non-citizen Phillipinos. They dominated those ratings because they were among the few jobs non-citizens were allowed to have. Now that I've looked it up, it turns out there are almost 40 NECs that non-citizens are qualified for:

Navy Jobs Available to Non-U.S. Citizens

If done right, this probably won't be a bad thing.

But it really irks me that government is focused on immigration to help pad the elections when there are much more important reforms that need to be done.

Yup I condemn illegals. As the offspring of legal immigrants I have little sympathy for those to break their way in.
