Video shows trooper shooting unarmed man, South Carolina police say

And you sound like my late father in law about the wallet. I rarely keep mine in my pocket. Sometimes in the door of the car, sometimes in the seat....
Man I just can't handle having sensitive items loose like that.

He couldn't either, it was like a personal affront to him when I did it, but I'm 51 and have never lost a credit card, DL, keys, or my wallet from that practice.

I did lose a CC while jogging around the mall in D.C. one year, but that's because I put it and the hotel key in my running shorts and forgot to zip up the pocket.... Thankfully it was about 6am and another jogger from my hotel picked it up and turned it in.

Man...lol I just....I just can't do that....literally, my fingers brush my front pockets every single time I stand up, making sure my stuff is there.

And if it's not, if there isn't a mental note siting right there saying "the phone is on the desk charging" or whatever...my world stops until I have it again.

The video you linked to showed the proper context. I'm not sure the cop even had a right to stop him at all since they were on private property. And to all fairness to the driver, if that were me and the cop asked for registration, I would have had to reach back into my car to get it.

But I while watching the video...I don't think my reaction would be to put my hands up...I probably would have drawn on the cop and started firing immediately. That's Army training, "the best medicine is superior firepower", and superior firepower can simply be projection of intent, it's not necessarily a bigger caliber or more rounds in the mag.

That badge on your chest doesn't give you a free ride. You fire on me, I'm going to kill you.

If I survived the incident I'll probably regret it, but right or wrong, in the moment I'm more likely to fire back, not wildly, but aggressive and with the intent to kill.

I have to share one story that's typical of the guy. He lived in a VERY safe neighborhood. When we'd visit, he had a little area at the side door where I'd put down my wallet and keys when I came in. Like I said, it drove him crazy. Every night about 10 I'd walk the dogs about a mile, and of course leave my stuff there. Well, TWICE that trip he locked me out of the house. Second time, he comes to the door in his boxers and t shirt, already in bed. "Oh, you forgot your key?" I miss him a lot and he was good to me, but not that side of him.... ;)

I have to wonder why the guy got out of his SUV in the first place, why he didn't empty his hands (was he driving with all that **** in his lap?), and why he rushed back into his SUV for his license (it's not in his pocket? wtf?). Is he just stupid?

My ownership is in the side pocket of the front driver's door and my wallet is always in the center console when I'm driving. I only carry what I need on my person at any given time, like cash and a debit/credit card. Does that make me stupid?

Am I the only one that's thinking, not only of the man he almost killed, but by standards that could have been killed just as easy?

South Carolina trooper shot unarmed man, police say - CNN.com

The man was pulled over for a seat belt violation. He trooper gets out, asks him for his ID, the man turns to get it and the cop starts barking orders and shoots him for fear he is grabbing a weapon.

Another ridiculous shooting from a cop so scared he shoots because of a perceived threat. He asked for the ID and then assumed the guy was going for a gun. :doh

Luckily though the guy lived and the cop is no longer on the force. I don't think should get 20 years, it just looks like he should really not be a police officer if he is that jumpy. Maybe a couple of years and banned from ever owning a weapon or serving in any kind of authoritative role.

Edit: Also, thank god that cop is a terrible shot or else the guy would be dead with a few slugs in his chest. He only took a single bullet to the pelvis.

Good luck with that.

Should the victim file a civil suit it appears he would win enough to own a good part of the low country, maybe the Battery or even Hilton Head.

Come on, he totally over reacted. He asked for some id and the guy went for it. Maybe he shouldn't be asking for people to reach for things if it makes him jumpy.

Why isn't everyone given an Obama Wallet so they can keep their drivers license in their wallet and in their back pocket ?

You don't need to live in the hood to know that you always tell LE what your doing with your hands like telling the officer that you don't have an Obama wallet and that your license is inside the car and that you are going inside to get your license.

SOP, always make sure your hands are in complete view of LE or you might get shot.

It's a good thing the officer didn't use the Applegate stance or the Weaver stance or you would have one dead stupid person.

Stupid is shooting an innocent person.

About two seconds later, the trooper that police identify as Groubert comes into view with a gun drawn and yells "Get out of the car! Get out of the car!" The gun is fired -- at least four shots are heard -- and Jones steps away from the vehicle, raising his hands in the air and eventually moving off camera.

"I just got my license! You said get my license!" says someone off camera, apparently Jones.

After being told to put his hands behind his back, Jones asks: "What did I do, sir?"

Stupid is the cop and anyone who thinks the shooting is justified.

That's insane. Did the victim in this shooting shoot a cop? Let me answer for you... NO!

So you are advocating PC ROE that Obama has forced upon our troops in Afghanistan that they can't shoot at the enemy until the enemy has already began shooting at you.

The victim was a ****ing idiot for going back into his car without telling the officer and waiting for the officer to acknowledge it.

This just another MSM trying to start ****.

Why weren't any of the cop shootings of unarmed white boy incidents weren't covered ?

How many of the below did CNN or MSNBC covered ?

Still over two more months left in the year.

This is terrible for everyone.. heart breaking actually.. the cop for some reason was sure he was going for a gun and the poor guy is so nice and was doing what the cop asked.. just terrible.. thank God the guy is going to be ok,,,poor cop is in deep trouble also

Really! I agree.

I mean, the guy knew he was black. And he was driving without a seatbelt! How much sociopathic potential is there in that!

Right as always, Jerry.

I mean, the guy knew he was black.
I don't think he knew he was black. I didn't see any watermelon or KFC on the dash nore stolen bikes in the back.

Maybe I'm reading to much into this but it looked like he was actually going to pay for his skittle and ice tea.

Babbling nonsense. It appears you can't stay focused on the incident in the OP. Good thing you're still not a cop.

The idiot is the cop who shot an innocent person. Your responses reflect outside the norm social behavior.

If I were just a civilian making a citizen arrest and someone made such a fast move to his car I would have reacted the same way as the officer. Except I don't miss.

If this were have happened a few months ago before the shooting of a street thug in Ferguson, Mo. this would be a no news story.

.

Tsk.

Too bad. Instead of a cop getting 10-20, you would be looking at 20 to life.

I doubt it, I don't video every thing I do.

You want someone to blame ?

The person was pulled over for DWSB.

Blame the liberal nanny state laws that made driving without a seat belt a crime.

****, that's disturbing. How the **** can the officer justify shooting in that situation? Seriously, this guy should behind bars for a very long time. Most disturbing thing is he fired 2 shots AFTER the guy put his hands up.

What, are you going to kill all the black people? I know there are a lot of racists among them, but that comment is out of line.

Anyone who blames all members of a race for what one or some of them do is a racist.

I didn't even notice that, wtf. Maybe he should get a lot of time....

The first thing I did was watch the video and make my judgment:

....so now all that's left to do in this thread is nit-pick the details and wait for the usual suspects to show up spouting their talking points.

So yeah, I'm just kinda wondering what this guy was thinking. Are gun owners the only people who put any thought into how to behave during a police stop?

It might make more sense to watch this video:

Your questions and responses should be pretty clear now the longer video is available.

Perhaps he was really going for his gun

Try the video that JasperL posted.
