Tribal chief: No FedEx until Redskins change team name

No, just a true thing. Do you have a problem with the truth?

no, i have a problem with people who disparage entire cultures because they're pissed off about some stupid sportsball fistfight.

Good for them.

FFS you still call natives "Indians", a name given them by a sailor lost at sea and starving who thought he was 10,000 miles east of where he relly was. No one on reserves was born in India so it's really time to lose the bigoted crap like "Redskins" and "Braves".

They call THEMSELVES Indians, FFS.

I couldn't care less about the Redskins, I have no interest in professional sports, I do have a problem with a group of people, or in this case a single person, who seems to think they can tell others what to do because they are personally offended.

Since when did anyone have a right not to be offended?

His and their right. I have no problem with it. But sometimes when a boycott like this gets a lot of attention it backfires. I remember the the president or CEO of Chik Fillet said some dumb thing about gays, the gay community and their supporters were up in arms and were boycotting Chik fillet. It seems Chik Fillet's business sky rocketed over the next two or three weeks and their little protest had just the opposite effect they wanted.

I would wager if a big deal is made of this, there is a lot more Redskin's fans than Osage.

we agree up to this point.

there's no right to not be offended. there's also no right to offend others without risking public disdain because of it.

Oh sure, but from what I saw, there are about 15,000 members of his tribe and unless those are FedEx's biggest customers, I don't think that they'll be bothered too much.

What, that I don't care about professional sports? I don't. Haven't watched a single game of any sport in close to 30 years. I just don't care.

I never said otherwise. Freedom of speech comes with consequences for that speech. If you're not willing to take those consequences, don't open your mouth. What's your point?

I don't either, then it may have the opposite effect. What I call the chik Fillet effect. Where Chik Fillet business skyrocketed for a couple of weeks after the gays and their supporters said they were going to boycott them. I think there are a lot more Redskin fans than Osage. But if they want to try it, fine.

no. that i don't give a **** about sportsball.

that you can't call a team the Kansas City Darkies and pretend to be surprised when people get pissed off enough that they decide to boycott your sponsors. and that you yourself can't offhandedly insult and dismiss an entire culture and not expect to get called on it.

I didn't say you didn't, I said I didn't. I didn't mention you at all.

Couldn't care less. If you want to call a team the Washington Niggers, knock yourself out. Or the Cincinnati Honkeys or the Florida Chinks. Feel free. The market will sort it out.

I didn't say you didn't, I said I didn't. I didn't mention you at all.

i was explaining to you that i agree that we both give zero ****s about sportsball.

irrelevant. your blanket dismissal of native American culture is still repugnant. yeah, they lost the arms race. that doesn't prove that their ten thousand plus year old culture should be reduced to some cynical comment about dancing around campfires.

Ah, sorry. So absolutely zero ****s are given this day. Gotcha. :)

I don't really care if you like it or not. You're welcome to your opinion, I'm welcome to mine. Most cultures die, we should let them die and move on. Clinging to the past does no one any good.

i'm not native American (that i know of,) but i think there's something good about revering one's ancestors. that's a part of Chinese / Asian culture that i really like.

It's funny. When the controversy over the name started, the people defending the name argued that Native Americans were fine with it. Now, when a story comes out about a Native American that isn't fine with it, the people defending the name accuse him of being stupid and a failure. LOL. Bigots never change. When confronted with new information, they adjust their excuses instead of adjusting their perspective, they adjust their excuses.

Tell me what is it, other than dancing around campfires, that this ten thousand year old culture has brought us? The truth is, they haven't evolved socially or economically in 10,000 years. Not sure why you think there is some divine virtue in stagnation. The only thing more absurd than Indians clinging to a reservation might be the Amish.

Doesn't matter to me one way or the other. If someone wants to revere their ancestors, they're welcome to do so. If that reverence gets in the way of living their lives independently, that's another matter.

A native American isn't fine with it. Who gives a crap what Chief Featherbrain thinks about anything? The truth is, you can find someone in this country who will be offended by something. We don't all have to change to accommodate the insane.

No, what's sad are people who cling to failed cultures and spend their lives rotting away on a chunk of useless land while the rest of the world passes them by. Anyone on the reservation can get up, go to the big city, get an education, get a good job and live a good life. Anyone who does not, who refuses to get off that chunk of land because of their ridiculous dead culture, is an idiot.
Spoken like a white man whose racial and ethnic identity is affirmed by the dominant culture and hasn't taken the time to educate himself on the effects that denying one's heritage has on people whose racial and ethnic identities are not affirmed by the culture. Hell, you're racial identity is probably so normative that you probably don't even think you HAVE a racial identity.

Nope because I don't. Neither do you. If you think you're different because of your skin color, you're a racist.

How dare they complain about the offensive name we gave them! They should be grateful! Let's insult them.

New name ideas for the team: The Wops, The Micks, The Limeys, the Niggers, the Honkies, The Frogs, the Chinks, The Nips, the Hebes, the Fags, the Dykes, the Breeders...

No one will object to any of those names unlike those oversensitive Injuns.

Well, many Native Americans have a problem with it. One was written about in this specific article. And you don't have to care about what he thinks. In fact, I don't "care" about what he, specifically, thinks because I don't know him. Moreover, I don't think that anyone should "accommodate" demands or requests just because the the person making them objects. However, I am in favor of critical thought and considering marginalized perspectives. Unfortunately, most of the criticism directed at the man from the article - including yours - is severely lacking in both.

I remember when I used to devote time to responding thoughtfully to posts like this. Then, I realized that education is like sobriety, you have to want it before you can get it. Whether you're trolling or not, you don't want it so I won't waste my time.
