US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria[W:354]

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Of all the terrorist/fundamentalist/radical attacks in the history of the middle east, from your memory, how many of them have been against the oil fields? In any country.

I can't think of a single one from memory.

Saddam blew Kuwait's oil fields as he withdrew in 91, and he tried the same in southern Iraq in 2003. IIRC AQ tried the same a few times as well until the Brits guarding those fields killed them.

Sadaam was a government, and our enemy, so it would make sense that he did that.

Thousands of Americans gave their lives so that we could kick that bastard out of power.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

If we were under the same kind of threat, we would. But times have changed. The idea now is to depose tyrants and foster democracy; that costs a lot less blood and treasure.

Hmm, perhaps we are no better than all those old colonial rulers. We decide which tyrants must and the form of government those countries will have once the tyrants are disposed of. Instead of colonialism, we call it nation building. Look at what that has got us. A Libya which is much worst off than under Khadafi, chaos and turmoil reign. Different tribes are fight each other and terrorist have moved back into Libya to use it as training grounds again.

Instead of letting the Afghani go back to tribal rule with each tribe ruling their own little corner of Afghanistan along with the shifting alliances, we alienated over half the tribes of the Northern Alliance. All 14 tribes were once our allies, now half of them would like nothing better than to kill us. Mainly because we forced our brand of government on them instead of letting them choose their own. I do not think I have to say a thing about Iraq.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Nah, I'd still do unpredictable strategies (SPEC OPS) first, before I uncorked the mighty war machine. Just because we have the biggest, doesn't require that we utilize it every time.

I never said we needed to. This isn't total war.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

What am I missing in that "before and after" large black-and-white picture? I don't see any major damage except for some minor stuff on the roof of the building. Is this all that a Tomahawk does? Weird.

That's 4th grade reasoning at best.

Most of the damage is internal. These missiles were designed for hardened targets IIRC, and anti-armor weapons often look like they have left minor damage from the exterior.

Russia Condemns U.S. Airstrikes on ISIS and al-Qaeda; Assad Approves.....

In the wake of the first American-led airstrikes against Islamic State forces in Syria, we're learning that the operation did not just focus on ISIS installations and its oil trade, but also the al-Nusra Front as well. According to Reuters, strikes against the al Qaeda-linked group in northern Syria wrought a death toll of about 50.

Russia was quick to condemn the airstrikes. TheWashington Post noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin — the patron saint of territorial integrity — decried the airstrikes as a violation of Syria's sovereignty. Not only did Syrian dictator Bashar Assad refrain from lashing out against the American-led airstrikes, he seemingly gave a very coded thumbs up:.....snip~

I never said we needed to. This isn't total war.

It should be either total war or spec op missions, combined with CIA satellite and operatives intel. If we went into this with 500K troops like in Kuwait, they'd all think twice before pulling any crap. We have the largest and most sophisticated military in the world, and should make other people and countries very leery of screwing with us. We're too afraid of negative responses around the globe to assert ourselves properly.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

I am not sure whether Syria signed a peace agree with Israel or not. But Assad and Syria has ceased all aggression towards them. You can be sure if Assad goes, so too does either the peace and you can beat whatever replaces Assad the odds are they will be very anti-Israel and perhaps gear up for another war.

It is like I said many times, I do not think anyone in Washington has every thought what a post Assad Syria will be like. It is like everyone in Washington has tunnel vision and can only see Assad, nothing else.

Yep, this administration definitely wants Assad gone for some reason! Could it be that he's trying to bring his people into the 21st Century, and that doesn't fit in someone's scheme of things, where everyone is subjugated except the elite? We see the illegal aliens sneaking into this country from Central America and Mexico just to escape that way of life!

Saddam in Iraq was a monster, but he did keep the lid on the pressure cooker that is the ME , so we had to get rid of him. Things are so much better now, aren't they? Obviously not! I still haven't figured out why we got rid of Mubarak in Egypt, though, just to make room for the Muslim Brotherhood to take over. We saw what happened there - the people said No, and booted them out just as soon as they could! With the electronic gadgets that people all over the world have today, they dream of having the freedom they see others enjoy. Why should rebels be allowed to deny them that, and take them backwards into the dark ages again?

Interesting, Assad appears to be going along to get along. Also, the Israelis used a patriot missile, thats only been done a few times, and by Israel no less-it seems that platform is capable of anti air even though it wasn't designed for that.

There was a factual error in the story, Syria had a jet shot down back in march by Turkey...

Are things any better in Libya now that Qaddafi is gone? I think not. There is more killing and fighting between tribes and factions than before, only it is not on the news. We want to defeat ISIS, make nice with Assad. He has that ground force we need to be successful. It is that simple.

As GOP Congressman Royce criticizes the President.
And a movement is now under way from DEM Van Hollen aimed at Boehner to bring back the 435 clowns from their vacation .

It's better than chemical genocide, institutionalized rape and a fake wmd program. A democratic government is fighting against genocide instead of a dictator committing it. Isn't that better?

I say we get out. There are no good guys. No pro western sides. We get out. Let them kill each other. We just need to kill the ones attacking us. Wash our hands of the Middle East.

Assad should have been ready and then Mobilized and went in the ground mopping up what he could. Although ISIS did go and take Raqqa from the Rebels in the first place.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Obama abandoned it.
If Obama can't play with the cards he was dealt, as every president before him has had to do, maybe he should just quit.
This has been the goal of your GOP since the night of the 2008 election .

That's debatable--do you think this current situation is better than before we took out Saddam/
Do you support the idea of a guerilla war against the USA for the last five years ?

But if we have total war, how would you complain about that?

No, but its unlikely-I dont know that we need it (it would take months or years to fully gear up). We would likely defeat these guys before hand (at least as they are currently situated, COIN would continue indefinitely
