WASHINGTON — The U.S. is planning to train veterans to become solar panel installers in the next six years, the White House said Thursday.
The jobs training program is among a host of initiatives the White House says will cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 300 million tons through 2030, plus save billions of dollars on energy bills for homeowners and businesses. It will launch this fall at one or more military bases and train a total of at least 50,000, including veterans.

The Agriculture Department will also spend nearly $70 million to fund 540 solar and renewable energy projects, focused on rural and farming areas. And the Energy Department will propose stricter efficiency standards for commercial air conditioners, a move the department said could cut emissions more than any other efficiency standard it has issued to date.

If successfully executed this is of course a positive, but is the upgrading of the electrical grid not a higher priority?

Oh great. They'll probably teach them how to **** them up.

Does the solar panel industry need 50,000 more installers? Did anybody check?

Hooray green jobs! $70,000,000 + the undisclosed amount it's going to cost to train these people for 6 years, added to the almost $18,000,000,000,000!
:applaud :applaud Great program indeed! Let's have more!

If the government is going to pay for it, I'd much rather they direct our tax dollars to renewable energy than subsidizing the coal industry.

Federal coal subsidies are forms of financial assistance paid by federal taxpayers to the coal and power industry. Such subsidies include direct spending, tax breaks and exemptions, low-interest loans, loan guarantees, loan forgiveness, grants, lost government revenue such as discounted royalty fees to mine federal lands, and federally-subsidized external costs, such as health care expenses and environmental clean-up due to the negative effects of coal use. External costs of coal include the loss or degradation of valuable ecosystems and community health.

According to research by GigaOm analyst Adam Lesser, buried in a 2011 report from the International Energy Agency is the fact that fossil fuels currently receive subsidies via "at least 250 mechanisms."[1]

In June 2010, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said $557 billion was spent to subsidize fossil fuels globally in 2008, compared to $43 billion in support of renewable energy. In a July 2011 EIA report on federal fossil fuel subsidies, coal was estimated to have tax expenditures (provisions in the federal tax code that reduce the tax liability of firms) with an estimated value of $561 million in FY 2010, down from $3.3 billion in FY 2007.[2]

Why? Tax money is a constrained ressource and many causes demanding it. Those that do not get money, might be unhappy about a program that another might like. Seems rather trivial political economics to me.

If the government is going to enslave people I'd much rather they enslave one group over the other.

groan...

I was unaware that the 13th Amendment had been repealed. You should start a new thread on that one here in the Breaking News section of the forums. The return of slavery to the United States is quite the news item.

Obama's holding up his part of the deal, paying back the IBEW for help putting him in the White House.

That's all it is.

I hope this doesn't dumb down America's electricians. Every four years (Presidental election time) the IBEW tries to increase it's union membership by fast tracking unqualified apprentice electricians as journeymen and you have these new journeymen electricians showing up on job sites who don't know how to pull wire. :lamo

Re: White House announces plan to train 50,000 people, including veterans, to install

Does the solar panel industry need 50,000 more installers? Did anybody check?

You have to ask how many IBEW electricians are sitting at home today waiting for a call from their union local that there's a job available ?

Usually when you finish one project you're waiting weeks or even months for a new project to start up.

Re: White House announces plan to train 50,000 people, including veterans, to install

You didn't like that? I suppose it was rather extreme.

If the government is going to spy on private citizens, I'd rather they spy on people I don't like instead of me.
If the government is going to go to war, I'd rather they go to war with Israel instead of Iraq.
If the government is going to regulate content on the airwaves, I'd rather they censor religion instead of cuss words.
If the government is going to let the TSA run amok, I'd rather go through that x-ray thing like on Total Recall than get patted down. LOL

The 13th amendment got repealed?! Holy ****!

You forgot "filling potholes" and "building community libraries." I associate all of these things together with a totalitarian police state.

Re: White House announces plan to train 50,000 people, including veterans, to install

Great, more taxpayer's money pissed away. Awesome idea! Lets destroy one industry to create another to replace it, and everything will run on solar energy and rainbows!!

Re: White House announces plan to train 50,000 people, including veterans, to install

Does the solar panel industry need 50,000 more installers? Did anybody check?

They will when gov't mandates require them; simply pass a tax law (like PPACA) that fines (adds taxes to) those without gov't approved solar panels installed. ;)

Re: White House announces plan to train 50,000 people, including veterans, to install

Are these moderate anti-IS more trustworthy to receive training and equipment? We do not want them to turn against us also just like ISIS do we?

That doesn't answer the question. Does the solar panel industry need 50,000 more installers?

What ? This wasn't a big enough of a disaster back in 2009 ?

I don't think so.

I'd be willing to bet you're right.

Re: White House announces plan to train 50,000 people, including veterans, to install

If we're going to spend the money, why waste it. Train folks to do something that is needed and won't just be the flavor of the day. Everyone I know who has solar panels installed them themselves. It's not rocket science.

Lovely, let's continue to support a technology that isn't ready for prime time. Put them to work on energy sources that work; like coal, oil, natural gas, then you would be doing a lot more for the country.

Re: White House announces plan to train 50,000 people, including veterans, to install

And at least that wouldn't be as politically motivated as THAT is a bipartisan issue, this isn't.
