WASHINGTON — Militants for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have traveled to Mexico and are just miles from the United States. They plan to cross over the porous border and will “imminently” launch car bomb attacks. And the threat is so real that federal law enforcement officers have been placed at a heightened state of alert, and an American military base near the border has increased its security.

As the Obama administration and the American public have focused their attention on ISIS in recent weeks, conservative groups and leading Republicans have issued stark warnings like those that ISIS and other extremists from Syria are planning to enter the country illegally from Mexico. But the Homeland Security Department, the F.B.I. and lawmakers who represent areas near the border say there is no truth to the warnings.

Very odd headline from the New York Times. The "U.S." is not pushing back against the warnings. Democrats are. And the first paragraph states that ISIS has travelled across the border as fact, with no attribution.

I suppose the NY Times does not want to appear in contrast with its beloved president and party, but obviously, their information contradicts what Democrats are saying.

Nevertheless, this is concerning to say the least.

OK....sure.

This is the same group who got it right on the Benghazi assassination? The guys who approved the early pull out from Iraq? The same group that saw the ISIS threat right?

Yeah, sure, I'm cool that ISIS isn't going to send some guys to learn Spanish and pose as Mexicans....yep

500,000 illegals a year streaming into the country, a problem a succession of US governments have been able to solve anyway, and it's "move along, folks, nothing to see here...pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

Meanwhile Canadians legally crossing to go shopping in Bellingham get strip searched.....

Maybe ISIS will come from Canada. It's possible.

There's really no way to keep them out unless we close the borders entirely. The Sept. 11 hijackers entered the country legally. Presumably they answered "no" when asked if they were terrorists.

I'm with you R88. Didn't I read one of ISIL top I.T. guys went to Boston College?

They are already here. Claiming they are not does not help the governments credibility. On the other hand, what if the government did admit they were here, living among other Muslim faithful? That could get ugly fast.

A real problem....

The "U.S." seems to be a contraction of "U.S. Federal Government" which is a broadly accurate representation (whether it's politically motivated is a different question). Headlines are often squeezed like this (and are often intentionally misleading too) so it's usually best not to read too much in to them.

The first paragraph seems to be a paraphrase of the claims being made (hence the following "...conservative groups and leading Republicans have issued stark warnings like those..." - my emphasis). I don't think the intention was to state them as fact themselves but it wasn't very well framed.

My conclusion is bad writing, not bad intentions.

There are more Muslims in Canada than Mexico and the Canadian border is basically unguarded for the most part.. so why not fear them coming in from Canada?

The "U.S." is not pushing back against the warnings. Democrats are.
Erm. You see no distinction between DHS, FBI, and legislators who live on the border from "Democrats?" You do know that a lot of those legislators are Republican, right?

The idea that Islamic State is going to invade via Mexico is ridiculous, as was the idea that Hezbollah or Hamas was going to do the same. It's scare-mongering, not a genuine cause for concern.

It's stupid to assume that jihadist won't cross the border illegally. It's an obvious avenue of approach.

Greeting, apdst. :2wave:

Or maybe they're already here, as some suspect!

No one said they would invade.....that doesn't mean they wont try to get people thru the Southern Border. Already we were told they had been studying material and maps over the Southern Border. Plus BO's own people have told him that they could get in thru the southern border.

There's the real reason and the politically given reason. Which do you prefer?

Heya Erod. :2wave: Here is some more from back on Aug 29th.

Report: ISIS Studying Mexican Border.....

A new report obtained by Fox News from the Texas Department of Public Safety indicates that elements of ISIS are interested in the U.S.-Mexico border as a means of entry into the United States. As Fox News' Jana Winter reports:

“A review of ISIS social media messaging during the week ending August 26 shows that militants are expressing an increased interest in the notion that they could clandestinely infiltrate the southwest border of US, for terror attack,” warns the Texas Department of Public Safety "situational awareness" bulletin, obtained by FoxNews.com. .....snip~

OH MY GOD!!! EVERYONE PANIC!!!

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. ISIL is a little too busy getting bombed right now to figure out how to send people to Nicaragua so they can sneak into Mexico so they can sneak into the US.

The reality is:

- No country can hermetically seal its borders. It's just not possible. E.g. Israel has one of the most effective military forces in the world, and the border with Gaza Strip has fences, sensors, cameras, you name it. Yet the Palestinians were still able to dig dozens of tunnels right under the fence, and when the time came, popped out and fired rockets at Israeli civilians.
- The last batch of terrorists who did major damage to the US just flew in, using tourist visas.
- There's a lot more domestic threat than people usually acknowledge or remember. The Boston Marathon bombers, Tim McVeigh, the Unabomber, and Weather Underground didn't need passports.
- Islamic State are adept at using social media. They're pushing your buttons... and you're letting them. Nice.

The "zomg ISIL is coming from the South!!!" is a bunch of BS that a few right-wing ideologues are seizing on for their own ends. Fretting over it is not going to make the US one iota safer.

So were you trying to say they haven't spread or don't put out propaganda.

Can you explain why BO Peeps Military peeps said the US Southern Border was able to be breached by any terrorists?

Damn.....just why is it that anybody who is somebody. Just doesn't think it is ridiculous?

Well there is BO's Head of Southern Command.....he rarely finds it ridiculous. Do you think the Marine Corp General was panicking?

Marine Corps General John Kelly, Head of U.S. Southern Command, Says Border Security an “Existential” Threat to the U.S. Main Stream Media Ignores Him.....

Breaking a trend of abysmally PC military leadership, the head of U.S. Southern Command recently dropped a bomb on the open borders crowd. Border security is now an “existential” threat to the country, according to the commander of U.S. Southern Command, Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly.....snip~

How did Fox news get a Report from the Texas Dept of Public Safety, who picked up what the Terrorists were saying on social media then?

Uhm.....if they are studying maps of the US Border and looking into the Problems with Mexico on the border.....how can DHS say they are not plotting? Or that there is no credible intel?

Was DHS hoping for suggestions from ISIS?

So were you trying to say they haven't spread or don't put out propaganda.

I'm saying ISIL is very good at propaganda... which is all that this is. And you're falling for it.

"Everybody" apparently doesn't include the FBI, DHS, and counterterrorism experts.

"We don't have any credible information, that we are aware of, of known or suspected terrorists coming across the border," said Jennifer Lasley, a senior official in the Department of Homeland Security's intelligence and analysis office.

"The number of known watch-listed persons we are encountering on the Southwest border is minimal compared to commercial aviation," said John Wagner, assistant commissioner in the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol's Office of Field Operations. "We're talking tens versus thousands."

I think he was talking in February about how the insatiable demand for drugs by American citizens has set up a smuggler's network that is causing problems in the US... while trying to get his budget increased. Using his comments to suggest that ISIL is actually planning to enter the US via Mexico is, to put it mildly, a distortion of his comments.

While congress dithers with hearings, ISIL continues to act.
Does that help m?

Oh were you screaming out for help? Don't worry lil fella.....

You're saying "don't worry litle fella" to another poster on such a critical situation ?

Oh, you think I fall for ISIL's Propaganda all due to me posting up some articles that's put out with the News. How does it feel to know you are so very wrong and that with all that thinking for another.....that really you should be singing that song. Reality use to be a friend of mine.

Judicial Watch: Feds’ Bulletin Describes Threat of Imminent Terrorist Attack on Southern Border.....
Judicial Watch has just put out this statement:

Islamic terrorist groups are operating in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez and planning to attack the United States with car bombs or other vehicle born improvised explosive devices (VBIED). High-level federal law enforcement, intelligence and other sources have confirmed to Judicial Watch that a warning bulletin for an imminent terrorist attack on the border has been issued. Agents across a number of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense agencies have all been placed on alert and instructed to aggressively work all possible leads and sources concerning this imminent terrorist threat.

Intelligence officials have picked up radio talk and chatter indicating that the terrorist groups are going to “carry out an attack on the border,” according to one JW source. “It’s coming very soon,” according to this high-level source, who clearly identified the groups planning the plots as “ISIS and Al Qaeda.” An attack is so imminent that the commanding general at Ft. Bliss, the U.S. Army post in El Paso, is being briefed, another source confirms. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not respond to multiple inquiries from Judicial Watch, both telephonic and in writing, about this information.....snip~ (Oh my DHS avoiding Official Responses That's not Right)

First you said it was all ridiculous.....yet you have been shown why others and even those in BO's own Administration don't think its ridiculous.

Then you cite FBI, DHS and counter terrorism Experts. The same who all are all involved with his Foreign policy where he has been a failure. ;) So much for more of that transparency and with BO's teammates, huh? Judicial Watch got it wrong with all others too, eh?

Is there any reason you can think of that FOX, GOP Senators and the press are pressing the White House to give away the President's "strategy",
thus enabling the enemy .

You mean to tell me, you still haven't figured out why other World leaders are Openly laughing at and mocking BO and His Team. Calling them Weak and talking about Keystone Cops.

While Harry Reid and Other top Democrats Keep Openly Admitting to BO's Plans and not only giving them away to the American people. But to the Enemy too.
