Is Stephen Hawking offering only a theoretical doomsday scenario for the Higgs Boson?

Hawking's new theory is a little disturbing. A particle accelerator hitting the Higg's boson with an energy of 100 billion electron volts could make the Higg's itself unstable, with the result of the entire universe being destroyed. But you don't have to worry about it right now. A particle accelerator that energetic would be larger than the Earth. As the article says, the odds are better that the New York Jets will win the Super Bowl this year. LOL.

In other news, creationists taken Hawkin's statements to mean that if God wanted to, he could destroy the Earth. Social conservatives have taken this as proof that science is bunk and FOX News has blamed Obama for science being so complicated it now has the power to do what only God should be able to do. Liberals have seen this as a sign that Conservatives hate science and atheists have mostly chuckled at the entire situation. More at 8.

Waiting for the new "scientific" thriller/action movie, wherein a madman tries to destroy the universe by building an earth-sized particle accelerator hidden in the asteroid belt.

He is of course, stopped, by a brilliant scientist/astronaut and his sidekicks/minions (including at least two extremely attractive female fellow scientists, of course).

Only he and one of the love interests survive, obviously.

We want it all now. Dump the commercials.

Say... isn't that the plot of "Despicable Me"? I loved that movie. :)

That feel when someone accuses your political lean of watching FoxNews but you don't even own a TV...

If a big band ever does occur again, let's all hope it happens in GOP strongholds.

I find it quite bigotted that the libertarians and communists were left out.

I would go to a GOP event if a big band like Pink Floyd were playing live.

There IS a particle accelerator larger than Earth. Its larger than our entire Galaxy.

Its called the Universe.

A while back some people were concerned that the CERN particle accelerator might be creating " mini black holes " and it would only be a matter of time until one of those Black holes sets up shop and started sucking in Switzerland and then Earth and then everything.

Turns out the Universe bombards our atsmophere with Cosmic rays with energies that dwarf what the CERN Hadron Collided can produce and no Black Holes or Higgs Bosun catastrophes yet.

Plus, CERN would have to actually PROVE that Higgs Bosons exist.

What they found was a particle that BEHAVED like the Higgs Bosun should.

They haven't proven that it was a Higgs Bosun.

I remember I seen the Buddy Rich big band one time, man they swung their asses off. Mr Rich was like a human version of the BigBang, pure energy!

ooops, not enough java, big bang, like a nuclear accelerator type, I'd prefer a neutron that kills while leaving the buildings in place. Pink Floyd sucks unless you're a doper.

yah, yah, yah, it's the spelling Nazis.

that moment when you agree with someone from the opposite political lean.

Knot me, I blind spelling yatzis annoying.

Me, lack of java man.

Yhatzee is fun to play until you play with a smart alec, his name is polkameister and has a bumper snicker that says play an accordion go to jail on his beater car.

Lol.. I actually like polka music it makes me happy, especially with beer!

Maybe it's not a Higg's boson. There is a theory that, if the Higgs is found, the universe is set back to it's state of existence before the Higg's was discovered. Then everything repeats, and repeats, and repeats..... FOREVER.

That's not such bad news. I will be able to make this post a gajillion times without getting writer's cramp.

The math said there should be a particle that behaves this way. We called it the Higgs boson.
We found a particle that behaves this way. It's the Higgs boson because it behaves like a Higgs boson.

with all due respect to the great Hawking, he's off his rocker. There are way more powerful forces in the universe than an Earth sized particle accelerator could ever hope to generate.
