White House: Obama to Delay Immigration Action

I'll remember it for you. Did you see Boehner's crybaby remarks today--the hypocrite Maximus whining about no Obama actions after Boehner has refused to act on immigration reform for well over a year since GOP Sen. Rubio
handed him his bipartisan plan. Bet Thom is more concerned !

What's your point here NIMBY? That neither side is ready to compromise or are you just saying it's the Republican's fault again? Because that's where we really stand - it's both parties that are the problem. This is not an all or nothing proposition. There are laws already on the books that could fix 99% of the problems. A real fix would be pretty simple, but things like amnesty and political party membership gain are killing any possibility of compromise.

The GOP made illegal immigration a uber issue with the latest influx of immigrants. The GOP got a reprieve from action on immigration when they went on summer vacation.

The ball is in the GOP's court. They were clamoring for action...now its time. Vacation is over.

It's a smart move for the President, wait and see if the pressure from the base pushes the House to act.

The constitution says the house initiates legislation.

Senator Sessions, Alabama forced a vote before the Summer recess on support of Obama's amnesty by way of executive order. All Democratic senators are now on record in favor of it except one, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV). This vote is being used to hammer about 6 Democrat senators up for re-election. The majority of the people are not in favor of Obama's type of amnesty or any other. They see it as a real threat to the working class. Democrats aren't the only ones pushing for it as the RNC establishment want an amnesty bill also. These establishment Republicans are in the pockets of the Chamber of Commerce who have poured millions into lobbying for amnesty. It really seems ass backwards to pass an amnesty bill when we are still waiting on the border fence to be built for the past 6 years that Congress allocated the money for in 2007 just prior to Obama's election. It sure would have helped with the crisis we have seen occurring on the Southern border with hundreds of thousands crossing into this country the last couple of years. Pity, now We the People not only are on the hook for the fence that was never built but now we are on the hook to feed, clothe, shelter, school, provide medical treatment for all these uninvited guests. It also seems ass backwards to pass an amnesty bill with a broken student/workers visa program where our government seems to be incapable of keeping track of those whose visas have expired. This year alone, our beloved government has lost track of 600,000 people on student visas alone which results in adding significantly to the number of illegals in this country. It also seems ass backwards to promote amnesty of any kind under the leadership of Democrats whose very policies promote illegal immigration. Makes no sense at all. And for a president to be so brazen as to push for it by EO is over the top.

Im the son of an immigrant and am tired of people pretending they dont understand the difference between immigration (a great thing), and illegal immigration.

Last week at the California gubernatorial debate my states governor stated that 1/3rd of our public school children are illegal or can't speak english. One third-think of the resources that now have to be allocated to them to the detriment of kids who are citizens. Our states education scores speak as loudly-and thats only in one aspect of the negatives of illegal immigration. Something like that percentage also occupy our prisons.

Nothing here is smart for the President. He wants to threaten amnesty or an executive order, he gets to deal with the consequences.

It saddens me that voters may not see through this cowardice farce. It will be interesting for sure.
What an appalling move.

Nice side stepping the issue. GOP has to act. Deflecting to the President shows you people see it as a losing proposition.

Lets see in the coming weeks whether the GOP base holds the GOP to what they were clamoring for just a month ago.

There is no requirement for the President to take Executive action...there is a requirement that Congress does...that is if the illegal immigration was more than false outrage.

But do you think the GOP will actually do anything about the problem. They'll be back in DC tomorrow and there's lots of things that they need to work on.

Immigration needs to be fixed.
Will they fund the Government past Sept.30th or just throw more money at it and kick the can down the road.
All the problems in the ME.
Jobs, the economy.
The problem is that they only scheduled 12 days in DC then off to the campaign trail.
They can be too concerned about these things.

Please do. Of course my prediction centers around one key and all important variable: that Obama will grow a pair and turn into the battling, scrapping, fighting defender of the people..... something that he has been rather reluctant to do during the first 5.7 years of his presidency.

I hear steroids cause all kinds of physical problems. What if Obama grows breasts instead?

Polls suggest that "fixing" immigration is far down the list of priorities for most Americans. If theres one thing that can wait-its this.

The President may have a pen and a cell phone but with regards to Congress he doesn't use either one very often. This is just politics, both his thread to do something and his delay until after the elections.

 Ryan just released the House Plan to reform a lot of our welfare state, borrowing heavily from ideas pushed by President Obama, and citing him in doing so. Let me know when Democrats decide to take Half a Loaf.

At least Ryan is willing to give credit where credit is due. Unlike Obama and others, who are snarking about "them". This snarking and taking sides has divided us more than ever before.

The absolute fact is that the American people do not want a blanket amnesty and it is NOT the GOP that would scream against Obama if he TRIED...it is the American people and THEY would take it out on the democrats. He is putting whatever action he plans on taking off til after the election because if he tries to BEFORE the election the DEMOCRATS know they will get their ass handed to them.

Why is it that everyone is insisting there need to be some massive 'reform'? We already allow 1 million LEGAL immigrants annually. There is a path to citizenship and there is a reason why the immigration laws exist. We simply cannot bring in every single person that wants to come here. The country cant afford it nor sustain it.

As to what he can or cant do...Immigration law is codified law (The Immigration and Nationality Act). Obama cannot alter or change law. He simply doesnt have the authority to do so. People claim Reagan granted amnesty. He did no such thing. Reagan signed into law the Simpson Mazzoli act...he signed law passed by the House and Senate. Executive privilege extends to the execution of existing laws by branches of the government. He may order INS to cease deporting any and everyone but he cannot alter the law to grant citizenship. He knows that. If he attempts to, it will create a pretty brutal and ugly scene. He will knowingly lie to a whole lot of people and intentionally place them all as the legal rope.

You and others are welcome to continue to insist this is all a GOP vs Obama thing...but you are wrong. There are large numbers of democrats opposed to amnesty. One of the most vocal groups today is the black voting bloc. They see their own community dying with unemployment rates almost double that of the rest of the country and rampant poverty, crime, addiction, teen pregnancy, education problems, literacy concerns, etc. They know what this would do to them. I dont think it would cause people to vote for republicans...but it would cause a lot of people to just not vote.

Bravo. Of course it takes an Independent to point this out.
We are one nation, and its time we remember that. Law makers and voters from both sides of the aisle need to take a stand and work for the people and with each other, for and with the American people and those who wish to become Americans by obeying existing laws

ITs sad and blatantly obvious that ALL that motivates him is partisanship. He NEVER calls out the democrats for their obstructionist attitudes. He NEVER calls out Harry Reid...the guy who has driven the senate into the ground since the 2006 elections.

Don't know where you're getting this from, but ok. How about the other problems that need working on? Do you think they will even try to fund the Government or just throw money at it till after the elections?

Why? Just what is it you think the GOP 'has' to do'? We bring in a million LEGAL immigrants a year. This latest spate of illegal immigration is a bi-product of the EXECUTIVE branch, not the legislative branch.

When people like you say you demand the GOP act, all you really mean is it is the time for the GOP to do what YOU think they should do. Many Americans, including many democrats, do NOT want blanket amnesty and dont believe it is in any way shape or form the right thing to do. We have an ABUNDANCE of under skilled unemployed Americans that cant speak English, cant fill out a resume, and wouldnt have job skills to include in a resume if they COULD fill one out. Adding 20 million more to the labor force makes zero sense to ANYONE. IF the Executive branch acted on existing immigration law, the problem would be resolved. IF they targeted business that hire illegals, and IF they secured the border (acted on existing law) and IF they actually worked WITH the states and local law enforcement agencies that they themselves spent billions training to identify and remove illegal immigrants, especially those that commit crimes...this problem would work itself out in relatively short order. There is no reason to round people up en masse and send them home.

Now...are there other things that should be addressed? Sure. Our economic relationship with mejico for starters. There should be passed some sort of path to citizenship for minors. There are things that could and should be done and BOTH PARTIES share blame.

The President may have a pen and a cell phone but with regards to Congress he doesn't use either one very often. This is just politics, both his thread to do something and his delay until after the elections.

Its obvious he's just trying to defer the pain until after the election-its like Obamacare in that way.

Hard to say but if Obama wants to make that political theater than we will find out. The dems dont have much to run on, a scheme like that while desparate may be all they have.

you seem to have drunk your own kool aid.

 says the guy trying desperately to convince himself that losing the Senate is a good thing.

CPWILL--your own OP is not about the welfare state--please don't divert from your very own OP about the House of GOP doing ZERO on immigration reform do well over a year since receiving Sen. Rubio's bipartisan bill. Start a new thread on Ryan, since he'll be exorcising his own GOP .

:) The argument presented was that Republicans in the House hadn't demonstrated a willingness to meet in the middle on legislation. I like how your only possible response to an example of them doing so is to argue that we shouldn't be talking about it :)

If Oblabla moves now on immigration it ruins the chances for dems in Congress come election time. He has been accused of "playing politics'......................................playing politics?.............in Washington?! Since when?!

 says the guy trying desperately to convince himself that losing the Senate is a good thing.
:)

Unless somebody has 60 votes - there really is no Senate that you have to lose.

"Disapproval" of Obama......shows approval of GOP "position"?

Wow.

:) I like how A) you didn't read the polling presented B) only read the headline and C) had to ignore three of the four options I gave you in order to come back with that snarky response. :)

Immigration Enforcement is actually a GOP benefit issue. It's also a great way for them to drive a wedge into Democrats - who now are in the interesting position of arguing that A) we should increase low-skill workers wages and B) we should also import large numbers of low-skill workers, thereby increasing their supply. :) Good luck squaring that circle.

Unless somebody has 60 votes - there really is no Senate that you have to lose.

Gosh. If only there was some kind of series of parliamentary tricks that a preceding Senate Majority Leader has set a precedent for.....

Immigration Enforcement is actually a GOP benefit issue.
Not really, it isn't drawing a larger share of the fast growing population demographic, Hispanics (who are growing primarily from US births and at a rate that is going to increase). All it is doing is holding on to the old White vote....which is a declining share.

And all this because you identify me as an enemy. Amazing!!!!

No, Haymarket. You're not just a victim of irrational vengeance. You said something inexcusable, ethically. I called you on it. As I noted, I'm waiting for ANYONE to support your disgusting position of "do unto them as they do unto you". No one has supported it, no one will support it, because it's grotesque and anyone presenting such a position ought be ashamed of themselves.
