Joan Rivers, Comedy Legend and TV Host, Dies at 81 - NBC News

Joan Rivers, a pioneering female stand-up comic and the queen of "Can We Talk?" gossip, has died. She was 81.

Rivers was undergoing surgery on her vocal cords at a clinic in New York City on Aug. 28 when she stopped breathing and had to be transported to Mount Sinai Hospital. Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, and her 13-year-old grandson, Cooper, who lived with her in Malibu, Calif., rushed to her bedside.

Sadly, another one of our great entertainers has passed away.

RIP Joan.

I expected this news, but it is still very sad. RIP Joan Rivers.

RIP Joan.

She had a good run and a long life. Certainly one of the premier female comics of the last 50 years. RIP

At least she didn't have any protracted suffering. I think this looking to blame someone, like the clinic that done her surgery, is ridiculous. Life happens.

I didn't care for her, but those who did loved her tons. The first question that comes to mind considering her rep is whether she initially went to the clinic for more plastic surgery.

Yeah - at 81 any simple procedure can go sideways. The blame game at 81 years old is a bit silly.

I just read earlier today that she was "resting comfortably"!

She was a total wise ass.....I kind of liked that about her!

I wasn't always wild about her style, but I did like her honesty. And she did throw out a good zinger now and then.

People don't realize how fragile the human body is period, especially in the senior years.

Tough year for comedy.

RIP Joan. Party with Robin.

Who is left of the old guard?

Is Buddy Hackett still alive?

She led a successful and long life. No need to be sad about that.

My thoughts with her family. I loved her, she always made me laugh. I tried whenever I could to watch the Fashion Police, just to watch her and hear her crazy comments. She will be missed, rip.

I'm sure with Johnny Carson banning her as a guest host and her husband committing suicide, she had her share of pains, but fortunately she did have a long healthy life. She enjoyed making people laugh and made the world a little better place. :)

At least she died doing what she loved.

She will be missed.....R.I.P. Joan.

American televison host Mac McGarry (right) interviews popular entertainer Joan Rivers on the set of the TV show "Capital Tieline," Washington, D.C., 1968. On the show, viewers called in to McGarry's desk to ask questions or voice their own opinions.....snip~

Joan Rivers: 1933-2014

One of the last things she was caught on Camera with.....was her putting it to the MS Media over the way they reported about Israel and Hamas. Then she went in for this surgery.

RIP Joan Rivers...Another Icon passes....Prayers to her family.

I think the things I admired about Joan Rivers other than she made me laugh were her work ethic, ability to overcome adversity in her life, her lack of political correctness and her ability to laugh at herself. She will be missed. But from the OP article, in her will she did not want any heroic measures to save her if she would not be able to do one hour of standup comedy and that she was not afraid of death. Rest in peace Joan Rivers.

Is Buddy Hackett still alive?

He's not alive but JR told the story that Buddy Hackett gave her good advice with, "If it's funny, it's not dirty".

Such an awesome lady. She was naturally funny. I'll miss her shows making fun of celebrity red carpet fashion. She could make me laugh out loud. Good woman. She led a good life.

Rest in Peace Joan, I thought you were very funny when my wife frequently watched you on E!

[...And I like that Joan Rivers was a Republican too.]

At her age that's a darn near perfect way to go. Everyone makes peace with their maker, friends, and family right before surgery. She didn't feel pain and didn't suffer some long and painful disease. If everyone could be so lucky in their senior years!

I saw Buddy Hackett in Las Vegas once.

Nothing dirty.

He told 3 or 4 stories all at once and he tied them together at the end.

On the way out I had to do an inventory, like, did he finish story 2, oh yes he did.

He had me thinking for a long time after that.

He was great.

What makes this more present than others is that she has her show on E and the reality show.

With her it is like here one minute and gone the next.

It is very different than an actor that hasn't been seen in 10 years.

Joan is still on every day somewhere.

I wonder if her show will stop or will they try to keep it going.
