Not sure to be honest. I don't think we (the US) should be entering into unconditional military alliances with vulnerable ex-soviet states. It is more trouble than it's worth.
Do you agree with that?

Yes please do. Ukraine is NOT a NATO member. And what do you expect the U.S. and NATO to do (including Canada that rarely sticks it's neck out for anyone)? It's not a simple matter of coming to the aid of a country when a fair number of the populace is pro Russia. That's the problem with you conservatives, you think everything is back and white with easy decisions.
You and the other armchair presidents can make fun of the U.S. president all you want but I can assure you all the NATO countries will take action if Putin tries to roll over a NATO country. Maybe your country will wuss out if your posts are any indication, but the other countries that matter will be there.
For now the wise thing to do is to hurt Putin's bad decisions in Russia's pocketbook and considering they are now in a recession It's only a matter of time before the Russian people and the Kremlin begin to question Putin's sanity.
Until Canada commits troops to fight the Russians STFU.

That may be true, I did not see that, but then I have been living on a beach most of the summer, sometimes even sleeping indoors. Being in the middle of a large city without radio, TV or internet, opens doors within doors.
I do follow the Canadian and European news however, and throughout this crisis, this area has been besieged with the story, ISIS barely on the radar. Without specifics to recall, the general scenario I see is that waaay back, somewhere in Obama's first term, the US through the CIA became active in Ukraine. That activity was driven by many varied corporate interests, some including Canadian owned companies, one of whom was years ago investigated by US Justice Department for selling technology to Russian companies.
It is only becoming clear now how much the Sochi games distracted Putin, and as the "west" pressure escalated his lack of response empowered them. Note how Putin waited until after the Olympics to act,but when he did he went full throttle, the first land grab since Stalin. [I opined to a journalist friend of mine that Putin was driven by having been so badly beaten by Canada at the games, losing what he said would be a "national disaster", the men's hockey gold to Canada a western country one seventh its size. My colleague suggested I might be very right.]
Both the US and Canada are caught with business interests at risk; here we say, good luck and hurry home while you still can....while in the US this test of manhood is matched by an equal testosterone based demand for "action"; as we stand, my daily newspaper says Putin is giving the finger to the west as he celebrates and brags of his nuclear arsenal.
But in the end, what "action" beyond these so severe sanctions has the west?

I saw others using BHO when referring to Berry Soetoro, oops, I mean Barack Obama so I thought it was appropriate. Now that I know that you are embarrassed by the middle name, chosen by the President himself, I will refrain from using it. After all I really do care what you think.
ANYWAY, the best way to avoid a fight with Russia is to let them know that you are serious and will not be pushed around and that it will cost them dearly if they try.

My reference was to the isolationist position of the US leading up to and during the first several years of the war. The "head in the sand" approach doesn't work in the long run.
Nor does the "it doesnt matter, we are all dead" argument.
Millions died before we fully engaged during WW II. Are you suggesting that approach now? Or should we make our defensive intentions known a head of time?
By the way, since this thread is about The Baltic's, are you suggesting that we not honor our commitment to NATO and our other defense treaty obligations in Europe?

Yes, I am absolutely suggesting that we withdraw our commitment to the Baltics before we are put in a position where we are unable to honor it.
This isn't 1939, and we weren't sitting opposite a nation with 5000 nuclear weapons.
