Sanrio shocker! Company reveals Hello Kitty is not actually a cat

Maybe someday someone will explain to me the popularity of Hello Kitty.

Of course, didn't you know that third grade girls have whiskers and pointy ears on top of their heads? Silly people.

I'm flabbergasted. This just ruined my day.

Well... ok.

Ok, Japan. Whatever you say. Just don't send the tentacle monsters.

My daughter loves Hello Kitty and has a Hello Kitty room. I don't really care and I doubt she will but it doesn't really make much sense. But then again it's just a cartoon character, it doesn't really have to make sense.

She is a human little girl - specifically a British third grader named Betty White

Well as a 71-year old man I'm not a Hello Kitty fan , but this does come as a big surprise to me.

Next thing you're going to tell me is that Wonder Dog was actually a mailman from Poughkeepsie.

I think Japan may be a little confused or at least these Japanese people. I think they need to learn a new English word, anthropomorphize.

Anthropomorphize - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

This is like saying Mickey Mouse isn't a mouse because he talks, has a girlfriend, never ran around on all fours, and does stuff only a human does. Or that Big Bird isn't a bird because he talks and is stuck as a 5 year old for his entire existence. They are characters, cartoons, muppets.

Well now I have to throw out all my Hello Kitty paraphernalia because now it just seems... creepy.

Snoopy was always called a Beagle. He has long ears. He looks like a Basset Hound to me.

If it walks like a human but looks like a cat it's...

Thunder!

Thunder!

It's just shocking to know!

Don't... Call... Her... KITTY!!

...Lest she consume your face.

Japan is a country. Sanrio is a business, and is far from representative of Japan as a whole.

A human girl with whiskers and ears sticking out of the top of her head?

Sure...whatever.

how stupid.

I generally see characters as blank slates to project my own image, which is often why I come away dissapointed when books and such turn into movies as they do not meet my projections.

the original creator can claim anything they want, but when these things are introduced into society, society ultimately gets to decide how to interpret the art.

And of course this all turned out to be errors in translation and reporting. Don't Be Silly, Hello Kitty Is a Cat

When Kotaku called Sanrio's Tokyo headquarters today and asked whether or not Hello Kitty was indeed a cat, a spokesperson explained, "Hello Kitty was done in the motif of a cat. It's going too far to say that Hello Kitty is not a cat. Hello Kitty is a personification of a cat."

The specific word that the Sanrio spokesperson used to describe Hello Kitty was "gijinka" (擬人化), which means "anthropomorphization" or "personification."

One again, to clarify, I asked the Sanrio spokesperson, "Then, it would be going too far to say that Hello Kitty was not a cat?" The spokesperson replied, "Yes, that would be going too far."

You will note Sanrio never claimed she was a human.
