Darren Wilson’s first job was on a troubled police force disbanded by authorities

Smear job.

Yes. I agree.

There was a NY Times article yesterday about Brown that had a similarly petty tone to it (mentions of Brown as a young child coloring on walls to further illustrate his "troubled past").

How about -- nobody cares about the past stories about Michael Brown or Darrell Wilson? How about we focus on the fact that a very short time before he was shot, Brown was robbing a convenience store?

Let's just focus on that. Not his past, or the officer's past. Let's just focus on what happened the day he was shot.

LOL this is what happens when there's a media circus, probably a bunch of reporters are running full shifts on this case since they were assigned to cover it 24/7 and they are running out of stories to sensationalize. Its not like any of this is new. If Rodney King or the OJ Simpson affair had happened during the internet age we would have whole media sites devoted to them Im sure. ;)

I believe that we can all step back from this kind of thing and not allow ourselves to be manipulated by it. Facts are facts and really are all that should matter to us as we observe

What are the useful facts from what you quoted in the OP?

Why did anyone else on DP post stories about MB? Did you bother to ask that question when you saw them?

I havent seen (or read) any 'stories' about MB. I only saw a video of him committing a crime. That's different IMO.

Then he must have also known they were unarmed. They "allegedly" took cigars for gods sake.

??? A cop is taught to never assume someone is unarmed before searching them.

I had a friend on NYPD condemned to the 'rubber gun squad' in Central Park because he assumed that...suspect ended up pulling a knife on a cop in the squad room.

Dang, that's gotta be bad. I don't think I've ever heard of anybody getting banned from Walmart.

My husband got banned from Best Buy once because he told the manager to go find a grown up that he could talk to.

HAHAHAHHA! I love Mr. Superfly.

he brought security. Apparently the manager had this wicked Napoleon complex. Yeah it was funny. He was arguing with the manager, and the manager told him that he needed to leave the store because of his attitude. Hubs laughed at him, and told him to come back with a grown up. A real manager. He came back with a couple of security guards, and my husband was like, "I have to go find my wife!" and he ran. Hilarious when I think about it. I'm flipping through video games, and he comes running towards me with this big grin on his face, security guards and this little wet-behind-the-ears manager running closely behind. "Leave the ****, honey! I'm getting banned!"

And then we were escorted out.

Hilarious- love it!

OK, now let's look at the dead punk. How was he raised? What level of schooling was he in? Was he or his parents active in their community? I heard his mother speak and she sounded less that illiterate. Did either of them graduate high school or college? What kind of person threatens another small person just because he is bigger? How many others did he threaten? What is the reason this punk got in to a confrontation with the officer? Why has the media not looked in to this family instead of hanging the police officer?

Why did anyone else on DP post stories about MB? Did you bother to ask that question when you saw them?

Don't worry, all this feigned outrage by the right is just a diversion to not look at this cops background. These same posters didn't have any trouble digging up all the dirt on Michael Brown.

Since when do you speak for others?

Wow! I've told them to go **** themselves. I haven't been banned yet.

The small city of Jennings, Mo., had a police department so troubled, and with so much tension between white officers and black residents, that the city council finally decided to disband it. Everyone in the Jennings police department was fired. New officers were brought in to create a credible department from scratch.
(Racial tension was endemic in Jennings, said Rodney Epps, an African American city council member.
Police faced a series of lawsuits for using unnecessary force
“There was a disconnect between the community and the police department. There were just too many instances of police tactics which put the credibility of the police department in jeopardy. Complaints against officers.)

Wilson got a job in the police department in the nearby city of Ferguson.

People who know him describe him as someone who grew up in a home marked by multiple divorces and tangles with the law. His mother died when he was in high school. ( I read in a different article that she was a con-woman who killed herself) A friend said a career in law enforcement offered him structure in what had been a chaotic life.

Wilson has had some recent personal turmoil: Last year, he petitioned the court seeking a divorce from his wife, Ashley Nicole Wilson, and they formally split in November, records show

when Wilson was a freshman in high school, his mother pleaded guilty to forgery and stealing. She was sentenced to five years in prison, although records suggest the court agreed to let her serve her sentence on probation.

Darren Wilson

So why wasn't this story released like the story was suppose to be so incriminating and telling about MBs "character"? What does this tell you about officer Wilson?

Frankly, I'm just as appalled by the release of this kind of information about this officer as I am by the blatant attempts at manipulating the narrative by the release of personal information about MB. Can we all agree to ignore this kind of crap?

So.... of all that..... the only thing that really applied to Wilson was that he got a divorce.

Damn... he must be an evil man.

Seriously.... something his mom did while he was 14 years old is hardly newsworthy.

but isn't that the point; to equate what was done by others in the policeman's life with the robbery committed by the deceased before his demise
a VERY false equivalency

not the point. it is ALL irrelevant.

It is not irrelevant that the "gentle giant" was seen bullying a store clerk moments before his death, when the idea that he was a "gentle giant" was a part of the emotional story which caused this case to get so much interest in the first place.

What IS irrelevant is the fact that the Officer's mom was a con woman who was arrested and convicted when he was a freshman in high school and died some few years later.

Why did anyone else on DP post stories about MB? Did you bother to ask that question when you saw them?

Because we were taking a dig at the media for drumming up this idea that Micheal Brown was this sweet innocent gentle giant in order to enhance the emotional response to this shooting.

There is a huge difference.

Have you read through this thread? I'm not the only one who hasn't read any "dirt" on Brown and who also doesn't see the relevance of Wilson's parents or his divorce. Maybe you can explain why you think they matter.

Is it time yet to move the bazillion Ferguson threads to their own topic?

Good morning OD - hope all is well with you.

I don't know what it is about this issue, but I find your approach to it to be puzzling and frankly, disgraceful.

You ask "can we agree to ignore this kind of crap" after you create a thread and post a bunch of irrelevant, personal information about the officer involved. That's like an arsonist burning down his neighbour's home and then suggesting they should all just be friends.

This post and this thread is very disappointing, in my view. But hey, everyone's entitled to their view.

They matter as much as the background done on Michael Brown. Surely you don't expect the news media to ignore this officer's past?

Smear job.

No ****.

This garbage is used against Wilson, but Brown's strong arm robbery just prior to the shooting doesn't count?

Homey don't think so.

Yup. I myself couldn't care less about the officers parents, upbringing, or the whatnot. What interests me is the part that he was part of an entire police department that had to be fired due to racial tensions. You know things are bad when they have to start from the bottom up. Not saying Wilson himself contributed to any of the problems, but he didn't have to work for such a corrupt department.

Homey don't think so.

Or how about Brown's rap lyrics, they must be totally relevant considering we had multiple threads and posts about those.

Somehow, liberals think that showing someone actually committing a crime a few weeks ago is "character assassination" but talking about someone's dead mother isn't.

WTF does being "a liberal" have to do with it?
