Police officer appears to threaten journalist in Ferguson - The Washington Post

August 18, 2014 1:40 PM EDTA Ferguson police officer appears to threaten a local journalist on Sunday night, with the incident recorded on camera. A police officer can be heard shouting, "get the f--k out of here and keep that light off or you're getting shelled with this." (KARG Argus Radio/Mustafa Hussein)

The Washington Post later expanded on the incident:

"Get the f--k out of here and keep that light off or you're getting shelled with this," an officer appeared to shout at Mustafa Hussein, the operator of the Argus Radio Livestream channel, "You're in our way!"
Prior to the incident, Hussein could be seen using a light to get a better view of the scene, but did not appear to be directly blocking police activity. Another journalist on the ground could be heard in the recording calling the police reaction "heinous."

They're proving everyone of their critics right. They are attacking the media, they do not want their oppression to be recorded. They do not want their aggression to be shown to the public later. This is the police state that people are so worried about.

This isn't the first or only incident either. They've targeted press with tear gas, and then dismantled their equipment as soon as they ran away from the gas. The first amendment is taking quite the beating down in Ferguson.

I saw this as it actually happened. You can see events live, as they unfold in Ferguson, at KARG Argus Radio. It was the Argus reporter who was threatened, and the cop who threatened him actually pointed his gun at the reporter's head too.

They're really just kicking it out of the ballpark in Ferguson. They've rabidly attacked just about anyone who can record the events as they unfold. There are terrorists in Syria who have more respect for the media than some of these cops.

They are doing more than that. Last night they brought in the heavy military equipment again, then turned on their sirens, in an attempt to provoke the crowd into rioting. Members of the clergy along with other standup members of the community, kept it from happening. The military vehicles then left the scene.

Good Lord people that isn't a threat. The police were getting shot at by protesters and the police warned that the light was drawing attention and the reporters would be targeted along with the police. The incredibly stupid reporter was illuminating targets with their light. I would be incredibly pissed at the idiots too.

I think the media is taking notice of the fact that photographers are getting arrested. It use to be that photographers were pretty much allowed freeroam even in places like Vietnam and Iraq. Now they're being manhandled and pushed around by a zealous police department.

I don't know, if what Danarhea said is true, I would think that pointing a gun to a reporter's head would be a threat.

I'm not really all that concerned about a single officer's threat to one member of the media. If that's the best example the media can put forward of officials' abuse, cry me a river.

Have you seen the coverage of these night protests? There are media swarming everywhere, in and out through the protestors, getting in the face of officers as they try to take arrestees away . . . I value the freedom of the press, absolutely, but this type of aggressive media behavior in a tense situation is unwarranted and not at all what the freedom of the press is about.

Lmao, telling someone you'll shoot them with a shell isn't a threat... brought you by: Pepper spray is just foodstuff.

It is true. Everything that is recorded by Argus is archived on their web site. You can see it all there, including all the attempts by the police to provoke the citizens into rioting, so they can then tell lamestream media that they had no choice but to crack down hard on them. Click the link I provided, and be prepared to be shocked at the police behavior.

Police in Ferguson arrest and threaten more journalists - The Washington Post

Overnight, several journalists reported being detained, threatened or otherwise prevented from covering the unfolding story. The arrest late Sunday night of three reporters — Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated, Chicago-based Financial Times reporter Neil Munshi and Rob Crilly, a foreign correspondent for the Telegraph (and no stranger to war zones) — reportedly came as the journalists attempted to gather more information while police faced off with protesters.

All this comes after two reporters were arrested inside a McDonald’s last week during largely peaceful protests in Ferguson. One of those journalists, The Washington Post’s Wesley Lowery, recorded the exchange with police who said they were clearing the restaurant where Lowery and the Huffington Post’s Ryan Reilly were working.

Around 6:30 p.m., those on the ground reported that Scott Olson, a Getty photographer who has been documenting the protests all week, was being arrested. The Telegraph's Rob Crilly said it appeared Olson was taken into custody "for not getting out the way fast enough when ordered." "He was literally just across the street from the media area," tweeted the Huffington Post's Ryan Reilly, one of the first two journalists arrested last week, adding, "Not a good sign for media access tonight."

Reporters Arrested, Targeted Once More In Ferguson

Ryan Devereaux, a reporter for the Intercept, was detained by police early on Tuesday morning. His editor, John Cook, wrote that police had initially given no information about Deveraux's status.

They're turning Ferguson into a police state.

So he was going to shoot the cameraman to protect him...that sounds about right.

You should watch the video. Tell me whether the cop says "shelled with this" or "shelled with us".

Lmao, telling someone you'll shoot them with a shell isn't a threat... brought you by: Pepper spray is just foodstuff.

First off, the term "shelled with this" is a very odd statement to make. On the other hand "shelled with us" is an entirely appropriate thing to say as the police were under fire and the light was drawing attention.

Tell me which one the officer actually said.

You should watch the video. Tell me whether the cop says "shelled with this" or "shelled with us".

"Shelled with us?" Oh, I know, maybe he said, "Held with Gus."

"Shelled with us?"

To which I ask "Shelled with this"?

It was dark and the police were under fire from the crowd. The dumb ass reporter was illuminating the police line with their flood light making it easier for people to target the police.

"Turn the light out or you will be shelled with us." meaning "you are making yourself a target".

The media can't get in the way of police work. For all the media like to decry this situation as a war zone, when was the last time you saw media in an actual war zone weaving in and out through the troops, putting their cameras in soldiers' faces?

This isn't a war zone, but it is a serious situation, and I don't have that much sympathy for media. I also don't believe most of their claims that they weren't doing anything. Their professional interest in these situations is exactly to get in the way so they can get the best pictures, the best videos, etc. If that gets them arrested for obstructing police work, I don't see that as an inappropriate consequence.

There are terrorists in Syria who have more respect for the media than some of these cops.

Just on the basis. Even when a cop is completely right and lawful with his commands, they didn't use to talk to the public in this fashion, and now its a regular event and its quite disturbing and goes along with the deteriorating attitudes they have towards the public. And with the court giving a green light to departments hiring from lower IQ pools, its not surprising.

That is soooooooo unacceptable, will the right wingers be in here defending that too. And why is there a political divide on such matters anyway. This seems to substantiate that the right doesn't value civil liberties.
