House Intelligence Committee Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said Sunday that he believes the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has put the US in more danger than it was in the lead up to the Sept. 11 attacks more than a decade ago.

I'm just going to say that I've been saying for a long time that the USA gained nothing by invading Iraq and that instead the invasion created a lot of new US enemies.

Mike Rogers words support what I've said many times on this and other forums.

The only country on this planet that gained anything from the USA's massive investment of lives and cash in Iraq is Iran.

What do you think?

I agree with you that the invasion of Iraq, and Afghanistan for that matter, were not our best ideas.

I don't think that Iran benefits as much as you think, in fact they right now are actually losers so far IMO. Syria come to mind, as they no longer near as useful an ally. The big winners seem to be the mooks we were trying to get in the first place, Al Qaeda and their offshoots.

Basically the lesson we should take out the whole sorry sad affair is don't go spreading democracy, it should spread itself. People have to want it bad enough to fight for it.

The other lesson we should learn is we need to delegate the worlds problems to others, and let them handle them much more often and get out of the role of world protector.

That was basically what I was telling everyone way back in 1991.

I was opposed to the 1st Gulf War with Iraq because I didn't see that the USA had any real national interest there. I thought that Europe and Asia should fight that war. But we all know how it turned out.

The main way that the change of government in Iraq helped Iran is that the Sunni Muslims don't control Iraq, nor Irans co-religionists, the Shia Muslims are in power. this is a huge help to Iran. And the USA made this happen.

I never supported out actions in Iraq or Afghanistan to begin with, so my thoughts are probably a bit jaded to begin with. It's really difficult to say if there is an increased level of danger with the ISIS situation. My instinct is to call BS on that idea. I'm really not sure that we are personally in any more danger than we were before. That being said, I think their presence in the ME is horrific, and will lead to tragic ends for many who live in that part of the world. My attitude toward them (ISIS) is **** them. They are savages, and hopefully, they are savages which the world at large will be willing to destroy.

Yes. And with no help in sight.

Not just Iraq but almost all of our military interventions since WW2 have gained us nothing but enemies across the globe. Its time to rethink US foreign policy.

Regardless of whether it was a "good idea" or not, I actually don't think that the Iraq War was necessarily doomed from the get go. The problem is that it was simply horrifically bungled.

We allowed idealism and "PR friendly" political marketing to get in the way of workable military strategy. Our political leadership was also so overwhelmingly paranoid about turning the war into a "second Vietnam" that they inadvertently made that exact outcome into a self-fulfilling prophecy, by refusing to fully commit to the conflict until the situation on the ground was already completely out of control.

If we had left the existing Iraqi army in place, instead of idiotically trying to build a new one from scratch, and actually given our generals the strategy and troop numbers they wanted from the very start, things might have turned out differently. Instead, political indecision and the Rumsfeld Doctrine basically turned the conflict into an endless game of airstrike "whack-a-mole" while leaving the rest of our forces to suffer a "death of one thousand cuts" at the hands of the extremist lead insurgency which our own incompetence allowed to form in the first place.

Don't get me wrong. I prefer the indirect approach if at all possible.

However, there's really no reason why this particular situation necessarily had to turn out as badly as it ultimately did. We simply lacked the stomach and courage to what was was necessary, and it came back to bite us.

Agreed. And now the drum beat starts that will likely culminate in more war, more Patriot Act types of loss of liberties, more need for robust domestic NSA work..............etc. order out of chaos, create the problem to the remedy.:doh

Yep, which won't ever happen so long as power is passed back and forth between the two albatross parties owned by big money. Something has to challenge that first.

I agree...but I believe it will not happen until America simply cannot afford it any longer.

And as America's economy continues to sputter and pant - propped up by debt and the Fed - the time will come when she will have a choice; concentrate on getting her economy fixed or go all in on empire building (21'st century style) to try and cover up the problems at home.

The former might succeed and the latter will fail.

Unfortunately, I feel it will end up being the latter until the former is too late.

IMO, barring a fundamental change in attitude, America is doomed as the world super power....probably sooner rather then later.

If China's inevitable transition to democracy is relatively smooth...it will be sooner. If it is rough, it might be later.

But it seems inevitable without a fundamental attitude shift....something I do not see happening until it is too late.

All good things...

Personally, and imo, I've always wondered when someone is going to use a nuke or dirty bomb on the US or even possibly some European country. (though I think that the possibility of the US being targeted far more likely) Particularly since such things have a tendency to "disappear" every now and then. I also wonder what the worlds reaction will be. Hopefully its not WWIII.

But I could easily see ISIS using a nuke or dirty bomb. If they (or some other terrorist group) does end up using a nuke there is imo 3 likely targets. 1: DC. What better target than a nations capitol? That is after all where "the work" gets done and taking that out would create chaos across the country. 2: NYC. Why? Because it has 8.34 million people...and terrorists seem to LOVE targeting high population areas. Plus its the money hubbub of the US. 3: Oklahoma. Why? Because it is considered as being the heart and center of the US and getting a nuke into the middle of the US would mean that they could get a nuke anywhere into the US which could cause a panic all of its own type and be just as devastating as the other two choices.

The big winner in all US conflicts, particularly starting with Vietnam, has been the US corporations in general and the Military-Industrial Complex in specific. Trillions in profit. War is good business.
