American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq[W:1007]

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

Obama in 9.30 Press conference:
... says we HAVE already hit ISIS, as well the humanitarian mission, and it will continue "if Necessary".
The humanitarian mission [on-the-mountain] will certainly Have to continue.

Erbil, a city of 1.5 Million, including a US Consulate staff of 30-50, and 40 Military advisers, is under possible threat.
Erbil is a Huge center of commerce and oil. A city that is a modern boom town due to Investments from all over the world.
It cannot fall.

U.S. Drops Aid to Iraqis; Militants Are Hit

WASHINGTON — United States military aircraft on Thursday dropped food and water to thousands of Iraqis beseiged by Islamic militants on a mountain top in northern Iraq, according to a senior Pentagon official.

The military made the announcement after the planes had delivered the supplies and left the area. President Obama was scheduled to discuss the mission in a televised address Thursday night.

Kurdish and Iraqi officials said Thursday night that airstrikes had begun on towns in northern Iraq seized by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, but Pentagon officials firmly denied that American forces had begun a bombing campaign. They said it was possible that allies of the United States, either the Iraqi or Turkish militaries, had conducted the bombing.

Kurdish officials said the bombings had initially targeted ISIS fighters who had seized two towns, Gwer and Mahmour, near the main Kurdish city of Erbil.

Administration officials said that Mr. Obama was considering airstrikes on ISIS targets in northern Iraq that would be aimed at preventing the fall of Erbil, as the Islamic militants continued to press advances. Such a move would involve the United States in a significant battlefield role in Iraq for the first time since the last American combat soldier left at the end of 2011.

Apparently, the Pentagon Press Secretary has disputed the NYT story:

Pentagon: No U.S. air strikes have taken place in Iraq | Reuters

It has been reported that humanitarian drops took place: Obama Authorizes Air Strikes in Iraq - ABC News

Perhaps witnesses might have confused the humanitarian drops with air strikes.

It was both. Two missions. There's a large group of people (families with children) trapped that ISIS is going after. We authorized an airstrike, after Iraq asked for help. We authorized, Obama says, because we CAN avert a wholesale slaughter (genocide, he said) of those families. The humanitarian drops were ordered because children were on the brink of dying from thirst and such. ISIS has been killing everyone, including children.

I'm not clear whether they are Kurds or a Christian city.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

A bit late, but good news nonetheless. I would hope that our involvement is not strictly limited to protecting religious minorities, but also aiming to regain crucial cities and facilities as well.

I hope it's to save innocent people.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be true. What a tragedy.

It is true. Both airstrikes and humanitarian drops. Families are trapped in the mountains on the verge of being massacred, and kids are on the brink of dying from lack of water, etc.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

It will if we sustain the air strikes it in all their areas and eventually get Iraqi troops back in there.

If. I hope we do, I really, really do. Some of my friends from Erbil have been emailing me for the past few weeks and the past few days have been so frustrating and sad.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

well they are not in trenches. they are in city buildings they are mixed with civilians
entrenched does not mean trenches.
Entrench certainly does include definitions which pertain to trenches, although you are correct that trenches are not necessarily involved.

Those are not always different things...

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

Food and water airdropped?

We should be killing ISIS first and taking names later.

But to do that-Obama would be tacitly admitting he should not have left in the first place.

Obama pulled out for politics and left these people to terrorist wolves.

Thanks a lot Obama.

No IS would be doing a thing in Iraq were Saddam still there, thanks a lot Bush.

I'm not sure what your problem with this is. We're dropping food and water to the refugees who are fleeing ISIS and need it; it's not as if the stuff's going to ISIS.

ISIS is there because Obama decided to lose the peace in Iraq. HE put those people there.

And he's about to do the same in afghanistan.

IS would have found no quarter in Iraq were Saddam still there, stop pounding these lies.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

So now you're reduced to playing the "left" card?
Any more of Nixon's deck left in your arsenal for the evening.

Such as GOOD LUCK Mr. President ?
This is the reality that the left is right to screech against-its as bad as it sounds.

Saddam is gone, and we were there, Obama didn't listen to his generals and pulled out for political purposes. And in doing so surrendered what we had worked so hard for to the terrorists. Thats who these wolves are, and they are killing hundreds of thousands.

For Obama to commit to military action, would be a political disaster-evidence of his incompetence.

Obama is more Nixonian than Nixon.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

got repeat?
Obama is more Nixonian than Nixon.
Nixon would be proud of Reagan's 18 trillion debt.
And the impotent know nothing, less-than-do nothing congress.
can't even get there own draconian immigration plan to the floor for a vote. :lamo

Begging Obama to do with immigration what they're suing him for doing over ACA .

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

ISIS is heavily entrenched in the area and getting them out is going to take a huge military effort.
the Iraqi army evidently is not geared to stop these people and we cannot count on our allies to assist us again in iraq.

no amount of air strikes are going to get rid of them either.

Aren't you positive.

The fact that the pullout was planned by the previous president and Malaki wanted us out escapes you? But I get it. You just want to bame Obama for something.

6 years later you still open with BUSH!!!! I guess thats one way to go but unless Bush is still in charge this is Obama's baby.

Malaki did not want us out-he asked for a presence there, as did Obama's own generals-but Obama wanted the headlines of being out of Iraq. He hid behind the excuse of lack of legal protection for the troops-the same legal protection that has been done dozens of times since 9/11-the same that was immediately approved when Obama sent "observers" back in.

As bad, when ISIS began its push last fall Obama knew about it and did nothing. And now thousands are dying in the most horrible ways (live leak, it will make you old) BECAUSE of cut and run obama and its time for airdropping food and waters to hold outs about to be massacred. This is the sequelae of liberalism...leaving a newly formed nation of terrorists and as africa, europe, and asia experience a massive expansion of islamists. What could go wrong there?

Worst of all, is not our destroyed relationships with our allies or our decreased political capital as a result of this admin, but the fact that we are set to do the EXACT same thing in Afghanistan. But hey, thats probably Bush too, right?
