Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.[W:351]

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

Quite the opposite is true!

(CNN) -- U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan have killed far more people than the United States has acknowledged, have traumatized innocent residents and largely been ineffective, according to a new study released Tuesday.
The study by Stanford Law School and New York University's School of Law calls for a re-evaluation of the practice, saying the number of "high-level" targets killed as a percentage of total casualties is extremely low -- about 2%.

So carpet bombing with B-52's would cause less civilian casualties? Hardly. That is what we are comparing.

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

Bill Clinton specifically said they were women and children. Not that that concerns you I suppose.

He said it while he was laughing. It's all a big joke to him. I guess 3,000 American lives are of no concern for you, not to mention the lives lost in The GWOT.

Michael Scheuer--the head of The Bin Laden desk at CIA--said Clinton's a liar; there were no civilians around UBL when he was pin-pointed by their asset on the ground.

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

It's hard to say now what could have happened. Maybe it could have prevented 9/11 or maybe it would have fueled the fire more. We can play 'what if' and go back and forth all day but it doesn't change anything. It is strange though that such a wanted man could be let go time and time again, I wonder how much his prominent Saudi family had to do with that, I know they disowned him and all but you never know.

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

That maniac Koresh set that fire himself. He also shot and killed Federal officers.
Actually sending tanks into a compound and dumping flammable gas caused the inferno. The video and investigation also very clearly showed that FBI agents fire at each other during their breach. However...let's talk about 'concern'. If you were 'concerned' would you arrest the individual when he was out jogging by himself as he did daily as a matter of routine, or would you lay seige to a compound full of women and children?

Concern...it's very relative, isn't it? You will excuse barbecuing 80 women and children to catch a guy accused of a bunch of things but find it distasteful to launch an attack on a guy known to cause thousands of deaths.

If it were another topic he would have a real problem with drone attacks were civilians were killed. But...he kinda HAS to defend Obama.

This Michael Scheuer,

In Marching Toward Hell, Scheuer laments "the war in Iraq that was instigated by U.S. citizen Israel-firsters and their evangelical Christian allies".[31] He continues,

YOU claimed that drone strikes are easier on innocent civilians, when in fact 98% of the casualties are indeed civilians.

Dishonest hyperbole is more at home at places like The Daily Kos.

We had weapons tech back then that could have easily taken out Bin Laden without leveling a entire village.

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

In a word..Time. Drones have the ability to spend days on a target before deciding whether to fire on it.

So they are more precise because they can spend more time over the target? Well, you seem to be trying to say that they can linger and wait for a clear shot, without many people around? That is probably true, though I think we could still get him without a drone.

The Predator drone can stay aloft for 26 hours total. That would include travel to and from the target

So NO, the drone that has the ability to target and then rain down hell fire missiles CANNOT stay over its target for days.

There are reconisance drone that can stay up for 72 hours but they carry Camera's, not weapons.

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

You guys are so desperately partisan it's hilarious. I can't believe you guys are in here basically backing the slaughter of 300 innocent people in a single strike to preemptively take down Osama bin Laden when 9/11 would still have happened being that he didn't even orchestrate it. Osama's role in 9/11 was being in charge of al qaeda when 9/11 happened and gave it his approval to happen. He didn't make it up. So 9/11 would most likely still have happened.

You insane partisans for the laughs.

Imo with Osama killed on that time there would be like three or four 9/11s.
Being hidden for so long time after 9/11 brought down a lot the reputation of OBL and his loss was so normal afterward.

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

You are so right. No easy answer. One of the many reasons I think it takes a special person to be POTUS or a similar role in the world.

It could be the war between Obama and Clintons showing its face in a more somber tone than it has been. I'd say maybe Clinton feels regret about it. Otherwise why would he talk about this NOW? It won't give his wife any more bumps in the polls. It's a clear zinger to Obama. "Oh I could have done that too." Type of thing.

Clinton said that months before 9/11, not recently. The recording of it was just released.

And Obama and Clinton? I think Bush knew more about an impending attack than Clinton ever did, according to this article.

The Deafness Before the Storm

I think it was said the day before 9/11, if I read the OP right (and the link)? Which makes it eerier.

The Deafness Before the Storm

That attack framed Bush's presidency. As he told the author of a book in his interest while he was yet governor of Texas. To be a great president, you must be a war time president..................my father got it wrong in Iraq, if I get the chance to go in, I'll go all the way to Baghdad and take Saddam out.......!

You're correct. Possibly the time he could've killed him was months before?

I think it was. Can't remember, but I do remember thinking yesterday when I read the OP "Damn weird timing....".

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

I don't believe this story, not even with audio attatched.

We all know 9/11 was Bush's fault. We see it posted here over and over again.

Bet he's not bragging about that right now? ;)

I don't think any of these Presidents mean to make mistakes, and there's no way of anticipating how crazy these terrorists are going to be.

Spreading democracy is really a catch phrase for expanding capitalism, and it's not a cure all for every nation.

Do you have a link? I can't find reference to any of these statements you've posted.

That's because youre only killing 1 or 2 bad guys...lol

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

Fom the OP:

'"I'm just saying, you know, if I were Osama bin Laden - he's a very smart guy, I've spent a lot of time thinking about him - and I nearly got him once," said Clinton, who'd departed the White House earlier that year. "I nearly got him. And I could have killed him, but I would have to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children, and then I would have been no better than him. And so I didn't do it.'

What a load of total bullsh!t.

He is SO worried about killing 300 innocent Afghan's...yet he doesn't give a crap about 800,000 innocent Rwandans who were getting hacked to death that he not only did nothing...but his administration got the UN to stop helping as well.

Bill Clinton is a coward and a hypocrite...a spineless wimp of a man.

As pathetic as I think GW Bush and Obama were/are as POTUS's...I believe they are far better men then Bill Clinton ever was while in office.

And if any Clinton lovers disagree...YOU ARE WRONG.

Wow that was a lot of nothing. You do know we have more than one drone don't you? We can watch a target 24/7 by rotating them. Thinking must not be your strong suit.

Re: Bill Clinton: "I could have killed" Osama bin Laden.

 depending. It can also be a way to avoid full scale war.

Regardless, at this point, AQ had already decided to go to war with us. Killing UBL would have simply reduced their ability to do so.

Killing or imprisoning their leaders doesn't discourage this organization, just increases popular sympathy, which gives them a wider pool to recruit from, more access to resources, and expands their operating fields and martial capability.

In some respects Al-Qaeda is stronger post-9/11 thanks to American efforts to destroy them on the ground. However, our ability to neutralize terrorist attacks has gotten better.

Which is the correct way to fight terrorists: take the teeth out of their ability to terrorize.
